Graphics and UI
LimonOS features a custom graphical interface built entirely from scratch. It does not use a standard text-mode VGA console (like 80x25); instead, everything is rendered graphically.
The core of the graphics system relies on direct rendering to the Framebuffer. The Limine bootloader provides the kernel with the necessary framebuffer information (resolution, pitch, memory address), allowing LimonOS to draw pixels directly to the screen.
Orchard is the custom graphical windowing subsystem developed for LimonOS. It handles the drawing of windows, basic user interface elements, and manages the visual layout of the system.
Because standard VGA text mode is not used, LimonOS features a custom graphical terminal named Zest.
- Font Rendering: Zest includes its own font rendering engine to draw text pixel by pixel.
- Cyrillic Support: The terminal fully supports Cyrillic characters, making it suitable for multilingual input and output.
- Networking Integration: Zest is not just a local terminal; as mentioned in the Networking section, it is capable of sending HTTPS requests and displaying AI-generated responses directly within the graphical interface.
The system is starting to run its first native graphical applications. For example, a basic calculator application has been developed to demonstrate the capabilities of the Orchard window manager and the Zest framework.
