Some quick ideas on doing Breadth + Depth studies related to OSHI

Breadth

  • We both collectively need to come up to speed on the history, evolution, and empirical studies that have been conducted on OSH+I ...
  • These may have identifiable communities of practice around them - such as hobbyists (akin to OSS meeting general computing needs e.g. Arduino, and other hardware making communities) as well as specialists (e.g. scientists hacking / making through DIY instrumentation (https://delfanti.org/biohackers/ and http://www.openlabtools.org/) OR citizen science projects ( those listed with instrumentation on https://scistarter.org/)
  • To do this we should write an ASIST review article which systematically gathers literature and synthesizes that literature in some way (how we organize the review is TBD)
  • Next steps:
    • Scoping statement - what is relevant and not relevant for our review
    • How to gather lit
    • How to organize lit coherently for a review
    • The end result should be both the knowledge we identify from projects and published studies, and the research gaps

Depth

  • We should also organize a study that can shed light on OSH - focusing one particular hardware or instrumentation type, and investigate this in depth
  • What we should try to learn or pull out from this study is also TBD ... But one quick thought is to understand characteristics of material open-source making that differ, in terms of organizational structure, resource allocation, credit / acknowledgment, and IP from, say, OSS organization

An analogue to a study like this might be hacking communities that emerge, out of necessity, in medical devices (such as insulin delivery systems) - Some pubs:

Practically - how to do lots of research at the same time...

  • Research questions are the hardest conceptual part of designing good research projects. They often evolve over time - so lets start a Wiki page and brainstorm ideas for both the lit review and the in-depth study.
  • We can put candidates for the in-depth study here as well.
  • Next week, we meet to discuss plans and what might be keystone citations (important lit that should absolutely be inlcuded in a review article)
