@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 13 Sep 03:30

New: vocabulary saving with Anki-style spaced repetition

  • Every single word you look up while reading is automatically saved to a personal vocabulary list (no manual save button - just tap a word and it's tracked).
  • On-screen word highlighting is now 3-tier: blue (never saved), purple (saved, still being reviewed), grey (learned/graduated) - and the word you just tapped/circled stays yellow for the rest of that capture.
  • In-app review screen (not an overlay - opens the real app): front/back flashcards with a ?? replay button, rated Again/Hard/Good/Easy to drive SM-2 scheduling, same algorithm family as Anki.
  • Browse all saved words, edit their stored meaning, or delete them.
  • Session history: long-press the floating bubble to see everything looked up since the bubble was started, with the same learned-status coloring.
  • A "Vocabulary" tab with live stats, a configurable graduation threshold (1-90 days, default 21), and a master on/off toggle to disable saving entirely for a lighter-weight app.
  • Copy support: long-press the translation popup to copy the Korean text to your clipboard.

UI cleanup

  • The app now has a consistent dark theme throughout (previously the main screen was light while every popup was dark).
  • MainActivity restructured into three tabs - Home (start the bubble), Vocab (review/browse/stats), Settings (bubble appearance, dictionary, translation API) - instead of one long scrolling page.
  • Settings sections now render as clean rounded cards instead of plain stacked text.

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • Verified on-device across this whole feature set: saving, highlighting, review scheduling, edit/delete, session history, and the new tabbed UI all confirmed working with no crashes.

WebtoonLens v0.6.0-alpha (debug build)

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 13 Sep 01:48

New

  • Text-to-speech: a 🔊 button in both the compact translation popup and the expanded word detail view reads the original Korean text aloud, using whatever TTS engine/voices are already installed on the device (no bundled audio, no network call, no new API key).

Fixed

  • The compact popup drew its text as unwrapped single lines, so long circled sentences ran off the edge of the screen instead of wrapping. It now uses proper multi-line text layout and sizes the popup box to the actual wrapped content.

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • TTS requires a Korean voice to be installed on the device (virtually always true if Google's "Speech Services by Google" is present, which ships on nearly all Android phones) — if unavailable, the button silently does nothing rather than speaking the wrong language or crashing.
  • Verified on-device: text wrapping and TTS both confirmed working.

WebtoonLens v0.5.0-alpha (debug build)

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 12 Sep 02:20

New

  • Expandable word detail view: tap the compact translation popup itself to open a full-screen detail panel showing every dictionary sense for a word (not just the top 3), plus its dictionary/base form when the tapped text was conjugated.
  • Real root-word detection via KOMORAN, a proper Korean morphological analyzer, replacing plain suffix-stripping. Correctly handles irregular conjugations that suffix stripping can't (e.g. ??? -> ??, ???? -> ???). The base form now shows up regardless of whether the word came from the dictionary or fell back to online/on-device translation.
  • Sentence breakdown for circled multi-word phrases: a particle-based heuristic tagging each word's rough grammatical role (subject/topic/object/predicate/etc.), clearly labeled as an approximation rather than a full parse.
  • Context-aware word definitions (opt-in toggle): single-word lookups can now send the containing sentence to DeepL's context parameter so ambiguous words are translated using their actual sentence context instead of in isolation. DeepL-only (the only provider of the three with real API support for this) and off by default since it always makes an online call up front.
  • The bubble's close button now appears where the bubble was tapped, not a fixed corner.
  • Settings screen reorganized into collapsible categories (Visuals; Dictionary, with Offline/Online sub-sections) instead of one long list, and fixed a real bug where the settings screen wasn't scrollable and had become partially unreachable.

Fixed

  • A sentence-hijack bug from the KOMORAN integration: looking up a full circled phrase could find just one predicate verb anywhere in it and, if that verb alone was in the dictionary, wrongly show just that one word's definition instead of translating the whole phrase. Root-word detection is now restricted to single-word lookups.

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • All features in this release verified working on-device.

WebtoonLens v0.4.0-alpha (debug build)

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 12 Sep 00:27

New

  • Optional online translation API for the most accurate results. Bring your own key from one of three providers — Naver Papago, DeepL, or Google Cloud Translation — configured on the main screen with inline setup instructions, a "Test connection" button, and an enable toggle. Priority order: dictionary hit → your online API (if enabled) → on-device ML Kit translation as a fallback. Credentials are stored encrypted on-device (EncryptedSharedPreferences) and never leave your device except to the provider you chose.
  • The translation popup's source label now names the actual provider used (e.g. "DeepL") instead of a generic "Translation".

Fixed

  • The settings screen had no scroll container, so once the new online-translation section was added, the Start button and several controls below it became completely unreachable. Now scrolls correctly.

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • Verified on-device: DeepL integration confirmed working end-to-end.
  • Papago and Google Cloud Translation integrations follow their current official REST specs but have not yet been tested live with real credentials — flag it here if you hit an issue with either.

WebtoonLens v0.3.0-alpha (debug build)

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 11 Sep 23:56

New

  • Circle-to-translate: instead of only tapping, you can now drag a circle/lasso around any area of the frozen screenshot (a single word, a phrase, or a span across multiple lines/bubbles) and it translates everything enclosed, in reading order. Quick single-word tap still works too.
  • Optional offline Korean-English dictionary: download a real dictionary (~7MB on-device index, built from the kengdic dataset, CC-BY-SA 3.0 / LGPL 2.0, no account or API key needed) for proper glosses instead of relying solely on machine translation. Lookups try the dictionary first (with a punctuation-trim + common-suffix-stripping fallback for simple conjugated forms) and fall back to on-device MT when a term isn't found. The popup now shows which source (Dictionary/Translation) produced each result.

Fixed

  • The repeat-capture crash from v0.1.0/v0.2.0 testing is confirmed stable across many captures in this build.

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • Dictionary coverage is best on simple, unconjugated words; heavily conjugated verbs/adjectives and multi-word idioms will often still fall back to machine translation - this is a known limitation without a real Korean morphological analyzer.

WebtoonLens v0.2.0-alpha (debug build)

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 11 Sep 23:36

Follow-up to v0.1.0-alpha, confirmed working on a real device (Galaxy S24 Ultra, Android 16).

New

  • Bubble appearance settings on the main screen: size slider (32-96dp), opacity slider (30-100%), 5 color swatches, and a "Reset bubble position" button. Settings apply live even while the bubble is already showing.
  • The bubble remembers where you last dragged it, across restarts.

Fixed

  • A crash when translating a second time: SecurityException: Don't re-use the resultData... Don't take multiple captures by invoking MediaProjection#createVirtualDisplay multiple times on the same instance. The screen-capture path now creates its virtual display once and keeps it alive instead of recreating it per tap, which newer Android versions (confirmed: Android 16) forbid.
  • The floating bubble occasionally baking itself into the captured screenshot (now hidden before capture, not after).
  • The bubble not appearing at all on some newer Android versions (foreground service of type mediaProjection now started via the explicit typed API; a getParcelableExtra deprecation quirk on Android 16 was also causing the MediaProjection consent data to come back null).

Notes on this build

  • Still a debug build (debug keystore), for testing/side-loading only.
  • Android only; requires granting "draw over other apps" and a one-time screen-capture consent prompt.

Install
Download app-debug.apk below, allow "install unknown apps" for your browser/file manager, and install it (this will update in place over v0.1.0-alpha).

WebtoonLens v0.1.0-alpha (debug build)

Pre-release

Choose a tag to compare

@BlueTitanium BlueTitanium released this 11 Sep 23:07

Initial scaffold of WebtoonLens: an Android overlay app for tapping words while reading Korean webtoons (e.g. Naver Webtoon) to get instant translations.

How it works

  • A small floating bubble sits over any app.
  • Tap the bubble to freeze the current screen as a full-screen overlay.
  • Tap a single word to translate just that word.
  • Tap anywhere else on its line/speech bubble to translate the whole sentence.
  • Dismiss with the close button or back button to keep reading live.

Under the hood

  • Native Kotlin app using SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW overlay + MediaProjection for screen capture (single-shot, not continuous).
  • ML Kit Korean text recognition for OCR (word- and line-level bounding boxes).
  • ML Kit on-device translation (Korean -> English), no API key required, works offline after the first model download.

Notes on this build

  • This is a debug build (signed with the debug keystore) meant for testing/side-loading, not a Play Store release.
  • Android only (10+ recommended); requires manually granting the "draw over other apps" permission and a one-time screen-capture permission prompt.
  • Not yet tested on a real device/emulator against actual Naver Webtoon panels; OCR word/line hit-testing may need tuning.
