Dovecot Mailbox Viewer v0.5.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 09:46

Download Dovecot-Mailbox-Viewer-Windows.exe below and double-click it. No installer, ZIP extraction, Python installation or separate _internal folder is needed. For Windows 10/11 (64-bit). Startup can take a few seconds while bundled files unpack automatically. Your original backup stays unchanged.

Linux: download Dovecot-Mailbox-Viewer-Linux-x86_64.AppImage, mark it executable and launch it. Targets x86-64 desktops with glibc 2.35+ and X11/XWayland. If mounting is restricted, launch with --appimage-extract-and-run. No Python installation is required.

Fixed

  • Avoid reformatting every HTML text fragment at default zoom; batch other zoom
changes into a single document edit. Release old preview documents when switching mail.
  • Coalesce live import updates so slow rendering cannot queue stale list refreshes.
During indexing, select an email to open it; new arrivals do not open themselves.
  • Keep conversation sorting away from raw message blobs, add date-sort indexes,
and use a read-only GUI database connection while importing.
  • Use a clearly labelled, bounded text preview for unusually large or complex HTML.
Original emails and exports remain intact.

Added

  • Measured progress for compressed archive passes, including bytes read, elapsed
time, speed and estimated time remaining for the current stage. Folder scans
show counts until their total is known. Progress details explain each stage.
  • A visible notice when no measurable work has advanced, plus periodic activity logs.
  • Native crash logging and automatic thread traces after a 30-second GUI heartbeat
gap. Help → Save diagnostic report bundles logs and system versions, never mail caches.
  • Regression tests for skipped archive bytes, cancellation, live catalogue reads,
long imports, HTML preview limits and diagnostic-bundle contents.

Known limitations

  • The reported large-backup freeze has not yet been reproduced with the original
mailbox. If it persists, the diagnostic report can identify the blocking operation.
  • Progress percentages describe individual stages, not the entire import. A stage
can finish reading bytes before its processing/commit is complete.
  • Native file dialogues can also pause the GUI heartbeat. Logs can contain local
paths and should be reviewed before sharing.

Third-party software: Qt and PySide/Shiboken are used under LGPLv3. Third-party-notices.zip (Windows) and Third-party-notices-Linux.zip contain licence texts, exact dependency versions and rebuild instructions; these notices are also available inside the app under Help → Licences and third-party software. The matching, unmodified Qt and PySide/Shiboken source archives are the separate *-src-*.tar.xz downloads below. Bundled-files.txt lists native files. Linux has its own native-file inventory and additional runtime source archives. You may modify/rebuild these libraries and run the app with your replacements. GitHub's Source code downloads contain the MIT-licensed application source.

Added

  • A portable 64-bit Linux AppImage alongside the Windows executable.
  • Desktop launcher and icon, with no Python installation required for the AppImage.
  • Automated AppImage import/search/export checks on Ubuntu 22.04, plus clean
Ubuntu 24.04 and Debian 13 runtime checks before publication.
  • Linux dependency notices, native-file inventory and AppImage runtime/library
source archives, with checksums alongside the existing Qt/PySide sources.

Changed

  • Update checks require a download for the current operating system.
  • Windows and Linux packages are built from the same release commit. Publication
waits for both builds and the Linux compatibility checks to pass.

Known limitations

  • The AppImage targets x86-64 desktops with glibc 2.35 or newer and X11 or XWayland.
ARM, 32-bit Linux and native Wayland-only environments are not supported by this build.
  • Restricted environments may need the documented extract-and-run option.
  • PST export is not included. Mailboxes can be exported as individual .eml files.

Dovecot Mailbox Viewer v0.4.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 07:53

Fixed

  • Open uncompressed Dovecot mdbox messages without a manual decompression bypass.
The N record type means normal message, not gzip-compressed message. Detect
gzip from each payload so mixed compressed/uncompressed storage also works.
  • Keep gzip validation and decompression size limits, with source-specific errors
for corrupt, truncated or oversized messages.

Added

  • Community-tested Debian 13 installation instructions using system PySide6 packages.
  • Synthetic regressions for mixed-compression storage in folders and .tar.gz
backups, byte-preserving MIME handling and invalid gzip streams. The packaged
Windows check now imports, searches and exports both message formats.
  • Embedded licence viewer under Help, exact dependency versions, third-party
notices and matching Qt/PySide library source downloads alongside the EXE.

Known limitations

  • Debian 13 instructions are community-tested; the automated packaged build
remains Windows-only. The forum member's actual mailbox has not been supplied
for validation. Other message compression codecs remain unsupported.

Dovecot Mailbox Viewer v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 08:45

Added

  • Underlined Unread / All tabs above the message list. Unread uses known Dovecot
flags, combines with folder/search filters and never marks messages as read.
  • Outline icon menus for sorting and switching between Preview (three lines)
and Compact (sender, date and subject) list layouts. Layout and sort choices
are remembered and also available in Settings.
  • Date headings for Today, Yesterday, This Week, Last Week, Two Weeks Ago,
Three Weeks Ago, Earlier This Month, Last Month and Older. Only populated
sections appear; future and unknown dates have their own fallback headings.
  • Local calendar date grouping with the system's first weekday, automatic
midnight refresh and consistent group headings across page boundaries.
  • A magnifying-glass zoom menu with presets, custom 60–200% zoom and a 100% default.
  • A code icon to toggle HTML/plain text. HTML is enabled by default, and explicit
display preferences are remembered. Remote image consent remains separate.

Changed

  • Removed the sorting dropdown, format dropdown and plus/minus zoom row from the
main interface. Reading controls now sit at the top right beside email actions.
  • Compact list styling and a lighter selection background with a blue edge.
  • Date grouping applies to date sorting; sender/subject sorting remains alphabetical.
  • Date headings are presentation only, so selection, result counts, pagination and
exports continue to contain messages rather than decorative heading rows.
  • Existing v0.3.0 search caches remain reusable; this update needs no schema rebuild.
  • Added regression tests for calendar boundaries, unread filtering, grouped
pagination/exports, icon controls and saved view preferences.

Dovecot Mailbox Viewer v0.3.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 07:53

Added

  • Date, sender and subject sorting, plus pagination with 100/200/500 emails per
page so every message is browsable beyond the previous 5,000-message limit.
  • Optional conversation view using Message-ID/References/In-Reply-To relationships,
with chronological navigation across folders and complete conversation export.
  • Search highlighting in message rows and the reader; Find in email (Ctrl+G),
next/previous matches (F3/Shift+F3), HTML/plain-text selection and reading zoom.
  • Original headers window with Copy all, and Save all attachments with collision-safe
filenames in a fresh output folder.
  • Settings for reading, sorting, conversations, page size, highlighting, local
recent-backup history and remembering window/panel sizes.
  • Cache manager showing saved indexes, source paths, disk usage and completion state,
with selected-cache removal that preserves original backups and other app files.
  • Support for validated little-endian Dovecot 7.x GUID index snapshots, 1.0–1.3
transaction logs, contiguous rotated logs, batched records and protected expunges.

Changed

  • Discovery, cache validation and indexing run off the GUI thread, with immediate
activity feedback, cancellation and safe stopping when the window is closed.
  • Compressed archives are read in physical order, avoiding repeated gzip seeks.
Recently opened unchanged archives can skip discovery and reuse their saved index.
  • Known Dovecot GUID mappings take precedence over stored fallback folder metadata.
Unsupported/incomplete/ambiguous index state stays unknown instead of being guessed.
  • Cancelled imports keep committed messages available, but cannot be mistaken for
complete caches or used for whole-folder export until rebuilt.
  • Older caches rebuild once to add normalised timestamps and conversation links.
  • Single-email export and printing follow the displayed conversation message.
  • Added regression coverage for pagination beyond 5,000 messages, late-parent
threading, snapshot/log replay, cancellation, cache reuse/removal and reading tools.

Remaining limitations

  • Conversation grouping depends on usable message relationship headers.
  • Separate mdbox map indexes and unsupported Dovecot layouts are not interpreted.
  • Complex HTML email styling can differ from a web browser.

@github-actions github-actions released this 25 Sep 06:17

Added

  • Bulk .eml export for selected emails, an entire folder or all mail, with
progress and cancellation. Whole-folder exports include messages beyond the
list's 5,000-message display limit and ignore current search filters.
  • Ctrl/Shift multi-selection, preserved as indexing adds messages.
  • Drag-and-drop opening of one archive or extracted folder on the main window
    or welcome guide.
  • Recent backups in the File menu and welcome screen, saved locally with an
option to clear the history without deleting backups or search caches.
  • Printing (Ctrl+P) and saving individual emails as PDF, including message
headers and attachment names. Only inline or already downloaded images are used.
  • Help → Check for updates, with an on-demand GitHub release check and a link
to the newer version's download page. No automatic installation or background checks.
  • File → Exit (Ctrl+Q), with the existing protection for an unfinished import
and a guard while an export is running.

Changed

  • Removed the repeated “Not sure? If you…” text from the welcome guide.
  • Added tests for exports over 5,000 messages, cancellation, filename conflicts,
recent history, drag and drop, PDF/print and update-check failures/timeouts.
  • The packaged Windows check now also verifies bulk export and PDF generation.
