LAB 13 ‐ Network component alert
Network Component Alerts are notifications triggered when network-related resources or metrics cross a defined threshold or face issues.
These alerts help you monitor the health, performance, and availability of your cloud network.
- Detect network failures quickly
- Prevent downtime of applications
- Monitor traffic and security issues
- Take immediate action (auto-scaling, troubleshooting)
- Monitor overall network traffic and flow logs
- Detect unusual spikes or drops
-
Metrics:
- Request count
- Error rate (5xx errors)
- Backend health
👉 Alert Example:
Trigger alert if error rate > 5%
-
Monitor:
- Tunnel status (UP/DOWN)
- Data transfer
👉 Alert Example:
Notify if VPN tunnel goes DOWN
-
Monitor:
- Incoming/outgoing traffic
- Packet drops
👉 Alert Example:
Alert if packet drop rate increases
-
No direct metrics, but:
- Use logs to detect blocked traffic
- Identify misconfigurations
- Metrics collected by Monitoring Service
- Alarm is created with a condition
- When threshold is crossed → Alarm triggers
- Message sent to a Topic
- Notification delivered (Email/SMS)

Notification sent to Admin
| Component | Metric | Alert Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Load Balancer | Error Rate | > 5% |
| VPN | Tunnel Status | DOWN |
| VNIC | Packet Drops | High |
| VCN | Traffic | Sudden spike |
- Set realistic thresholds (avoid false alerts)
- Use multiple alarms (warning + critical)
- Monitor both traffic and errors
- Integrate alerts with Notification Topics
- Regularly review logs and metrics
Network Component Alerts in OCI are notifications triggered when network resources like load balancers, VPNs, or traffic metrics exceed defined thresholds, helping maintain network performance and availability.
