LAB 19 ‐ Extend Instance configuration
Extending an instance configuration means increasing the compute resources of an existing virtual machine (VM), such as CPU and Memory, to improve server performance and handle higher workloads.
In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), this is commonly done by modifying the instance shape configuration.
For example:
- Increasing OCPUs from 1 to 2
- Increasing Memory from 16 GB to 24 GB
This process is also called Vertical Scaling because the resources of the same server are increased instead of creating a new server.
Instance configuration is extended when the server experiences:
- High CPU utilization
- High memory consumption
- Application slowness
- Increased user traffic
- Performance bottlenecks
- Capacity requirements for new applications or services
By increasing CPU and Memory, the instance gets more processing power and RAM, which improves application performance and system stability.
Before extending the instance configuration, the following points should be checked:
- Verify current CPU and Memory utilization
- Confirm business requirement and workload demand
- Take approval from the application/business team
- Schedule activity during maintenance window or business-approved downtime
- Check if the selected shape supports the required CPU and Memory values
Before modifying the CPU or Memory configuration, the instance/server is usually stopped to safely apply the new configuration changes.
Changing CPU or Memory configuration may require the instance to restart.
Because of this:
- Temporary outage or downtime can occur
- Running applications may become unavailable during the restart
- Users may experience service interruption
Therefore, this activity is usually performed during:
- Approved maintenance windows
- Low business traffic hours
- Planned outage periods with proper approval
- Improves server performance
- Reduces application lag
- Handles higher workloads efficiently
- Provides better resource availability
- Supports business growth and scaling requirements
- OCPU: 1
- Memory: 16 GB
- OCPU: 2
- Memory: 24 GB
- Better processing capability
- Improved application response time
- Increased workload handling capacity
After updating the configuration, monitor the instance performance to confirm:
- CPU utilization is stable
- Memory usage is optimized
- Application performance has improved
- No alerts or issues are triggered after scaling activity
- First we have to stop our instance by select the instance, go to Action option and click on the Stop.
- Again select the instance go to Action then select More actions then click on Edit.
- In the Edit instance window scroll down change the shape by clicking on change shape side arrow now increase the ocpu as 2 and amount of memory as 24 then click on Save changes.
