Getting Started
There is no way around it: every beacon tier consumes a Beacon block in its recipe. If you have a working beacon, you are ready.
I
IBI I = Iron Ingot
I B = Beacon
Press B, or right-click the beacon in your hand. The key is rebindable under Options → Controls in its own Portable Beacons category, and it finds the beacon wherever it is — including one worn in a Curios slot. You get the beacon's own screen: your inventory at the bottom, the effect cases at the top, and tabs down the right-hand side.
Click an empty case. A searchable list opens, showing only what this beacon is allowed to project — a tier I beacon sees Speed, Haste and Jump Boost, since the rest need a higher tier.
Pick one. The panel below fills in with its details: what it costs, what level it can reach, and who it reaches.
Open the fuel tab on the right and drop in an iron ingot. That is five minutes of one basic effect; a diamond is an hour, a netherite ingot eight.
The beacon tops itself up one item at a time, and only while it is actually short — it will not burn most of a netherite ingot to cover a small gap.
The power tab, at the top of the right-hand side, is the master switch. It stops all consumption instantly, and it always works — wherever you are, whatever else is configured.
The beacon glints while it is running, so you can tell at a glance from your inventory.
Sharing is earned. Beacons I and II keep everything to you until you fit an Attunement augment; Beacon III and up reach your team out of the box, and Attunement widens that to everyone nearby. Each effect chooses its own audience independently — sharing Regeneration with the group while keeping Haste to yourself is the intended kind of decision. See The Beacon Screen.
Upgrading feeds the previous beacon into the next recipe, so nothing is wasted. See Beacons and Tiers.
Augments slot into tiers II and up: more range, more effects at once, cheaper fuel, a bigger buffer, wider sharing, or hidden particles. See Augments.
Standing near your own beacon makes any effect it already provides free — the beacon skips it entirely rather than paying twice.
When the buffer empties, the beacon switches itself off and says so in the action bar. It will not silently stop: effects ending with no explanation reads as a bug. Refill it and switch it back on.
This wiki is the reference for Portable Beacons. Numbers on these pages are taken from the shipped datapack files — if a modpack you are playing has changed them, its own values win.
