History
Despite being in an early development stage, and the first release being made in July 2019, the project started in late 2017. A lot of things happened and went wrong before the Modernity finally became a playable mod.
The Modernity development all started in late 2017, within a never-released mod project by RGSW, named 'RgDimensions'. This project focused mainly on the Nether, but came up with its own dimension too. Formerly called the 'Deep Spacetime Office', it was meant to be an underground, infinite office structure in its own dimension. But it did change almost immediately into a Nether like dimension filled with a kind of stone we now still know as 'Darkrock'. In summer 2017, the dimension got his own project under the name 'The Modernity' and became available on GitHub.
The cavern dimension became more open than the Nether, and eventually became basically some surface dimension with a roof and a random pillar. Colored trees and plants (this weird coloring was given the name 'Iguanum') grew all over the place. Trees were just tall grey logs with a colored sphere of leaves at the top. Rivers and lakes of 'Modernized Water' appeared (at the time, this water was way lighter in color than now). The lore of this dimension was that it was controlled by a supercomputer called the Central AI, which got infected by a virus and cursed the complete world. The dimension would have lied far below the Nether, lost, and hidden behind a deep void.
Later, the roof of the dimension was removed and some shader sky was added. An underground, Nether-like cave system became available, which could be accessed just by digging down. After adding, removing and changing a lot of biomes, the colors of 'Iguanum' plants and trees were turned back into red and green, making everything look more natural. More plants were brought to the Modernity, some of them emitting light. The Modernity became a more Overworld-like dimension, but then dark and smudgy, like the Betweenlands.
A while later, the red colored 'Iguanum' was removed, green being the only color that remained. 'Iguanum' trees were retextured, got a black, dark log and were finally renamed to 'Blackwood trees'. The grass and ferns were renamed to 'Dark Grass' and 'Dark Ferns'. Dark dirt became brown instead of black. The Modernity started to look similar to what it looks like now. More and more plants were added. An experimental mob called the 'Imo' was added. Imoes were cat like creatures, with their body just floating above their paws. The made cat-like sounds. When the first snapshots of 1.14 came out, the Imoes got the sounds of the newly added stray cats in 1.14. A new cave system was added below the surface, and even more caves appeared in the 'Deep Caverns' dimension. A Nether-like dimension was also added but remained inaccessible.
With the release of Minecraft Forge for 1.13 (which took very long to be released), an attempt to port the Modernity to 1.13 was done. This attempt failed and development continued in 1.12.2. A new Overworld biome was added which was key to the creation of the portal. A new mob called the 'Curser' was added in these biomes. Being mainly populated by Cursers and Endermen, this biome was a true hell, looking completely grayed out from the rest of the Overworld. After the addition of this biome, the authors tried to make another attempt to port the mod to 1.13, but again failed. From there, more things started to go wrong. Development was discontinued for a while until the 1.13 libraries would have become better.
In June 2019, the project was picked up again. However, the mod was built from ground up again, this time in 1.13. The goal was to make smaller updates and release them as InDev updates. This worked very good. From here, the community finally started growing, the first members coming from the MistyWorld community. On July 9th, 2019, the first InDev release was made.
This project is the project that is still active right now. 1.13 being almost skipped by Forge, the InDev-0.2.0 update moved the mod to 1.14.4 for better modding support.
