Installation and Updates

Choose an installation

Where you use it How to install
NAS or home server Follow the Docker Quick Start
fnOS Download the .fpk from the latest release and install it manually in App Center
Android phone Choose a stable release with an .apk attachment in the release list
Computer, iPhone, or iPad Open your server's address in a browser

The Android app connects to a server; it does not replace the server. As of September 20, 2026, the latest stable server is v1.2.0, and the latest stable Android APK is on the v1.0.2 release page. Server releases do not always include an APK. No public iOS IPA is currently available.

First installation on fnOS

  1. Manually install the downloaded .fpk in App Center. Choose an unused port; the default is 3000.
  2. Open Ermao Books from its desktop shortcut and create an account.
  3. Put books in the fnOS shuku.library shared folder.
  4. Add /libraries/books in Ermao Books, choose an organization mode, and start importing.

Fresh install erases accounts, settings, reading progress, and other app data without making a backup. Original library files are retained. Back up existing data first. Moving from 0.x to 1.x requires a fresh installation; do not reuse the old app data directly.

Update the server

Back up first, and pause reading and listening.

To upgrade from v1.1.0 to v1.2.0, update the Docker image or fnOS application and keep existing data and book mounts. This upgrade is not available directly through in-app updates.

On deployments that support in-app updates, an administrator can:

  1. Open Settings → About → Updates and version history and select Refresh update status.
  2. Select Download update when a new version is available. Wait until the package is ready.
  3. Select Update now, check the version, and confirm.
  4. Wait for the service to return. Check the actual version in About, then check your library and reading progress.

Downloading does not install the update automatically. The service will be temporarily unavailable during installation. Do not shut down the container or device. If the buttons are missing or updating is unsupported, follow the displayed message and the target release's instructions.

For older Docker installations that need a new image, run these commands in the original deployment folder:

docker compose pull
docker compose up -d

Keep the original app-data and library mounts. On deployments with in-app updates, pulling an image alone does not guarantee that the running app is upgraded. Use the in-app update process above and check About afterward.

On fnOS, install the newer .fpk in App Center and select Update to retain data. After an in-app update, fnOS may show a different package version; use the actual running version in Ermao Books About.

Update Android

Download and install the newer stable APK over the existing app, following that release's upgrade notes. Stable and Beta are separate apps and require separate sign-ins. Updating the server does not update the phone app.

Stop or uninstall

For Docker, run docker compose down in the original deployment folder. The data/storage and library folders in our example are retained. Before uninstalling on fnOS, make a backup and check any data-removal options. Keep at least one copy of your app data and original books.
