iw4Strike v0.3.3 alpha (Windows, Linux untested)

Choose a tag to compare

@Gh4zi Gh4zi released this 12 Oct 07:47

Alpha update of iw4Strike: Counter-Strike gameplay on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps, built on IW4L.

Alpha. v0.3.3 fixes the stutters in matches, brings Counter-Strike 2's guns (experimental), AMD FSR 3, new audio options (output device, volume sliders, HRTF) and a CS2-style console, and makes the game faster again.

v0.3.3 keeps network protocol 103, so it plays with v0.3.2.

New in v0.3.3

Smoother matches

  • No more stutters and freezes in matches on PCs with 16 GB of RAM. Each one held the game for 100 to 400 ms: it was using so much memory that Windows had to page it out. It now uses about 4 GB less (Favela with 9 bots: 11.3 GB → 7 GB).

  • Sounds no longer hitch the first time they play. Every CS gun, player, radio and bomb sound, breaking glass and the map's own sounds are loaded with the match.

  • Adding several bots at once no longer hitches the game.

  • Higher FPS. The engine stopped redoing work every frame when nothing had changed. With 6 bots on our test PC:

    Map FPS
    Highrise 173 → 211
    Afghan 164 → 191
    Favela 130 → 152
    Terminal 162 → 177
    Rust 257 → 271
  • Firefights with many players shooting at once cost the server less.

Counter-Strike 2 (experimental)

  • CS2's guns in your hands. Tick CS2's Use box in Manage Game Paths to get all 24 guns, the knife, the grenades and the C4. They come with CS2's arms, animations and materials: shotguns reload shell by shell, pistols lock their slide back, and the M4A1-S and USP-S show their silencer only when it's on. You still need CS:S, CZ or CS 1.6 for everything else.
  • Knife and grenades in third person (work in progress): the knife takes the installed CS game's stance (CS2, CS:S, CZ or CS 1.6), on the server's hitboxes too, and its animations are still being worked on. Grenades are experimental.
  • CS2's volumetric smoke (work in progress): smoke that fills the room and flows around corners. Smoke stays CS:GO's by default. Try it with smoke_mode cs2 (set by the host), and use smoke_quality high|medium|low to trade looks for speed.
  • Blood splatters on the walls and floor behind a player a bullet hits, as in CS:GO.

Graphics

  • AMD FSR 3 upscaling: Options > Advanced Video > AMD FSR 3 (Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance, Ultra Performance) and FSR Sharpness. From the console: r_fsr, r_fsr_sharpness.
  • Sun shadows fixed:
    • Laundry, props and players out of view cast their shadows again.
    • No more dark blocks on the ground under trees.
  • Muzzle flashes, bullet impacts and explosions light the area warm orange again. They had been lighting it teal.

Audio

  • Volume sliders: Options > Audio has Master, SFX, Music, Voice and Ambient, each with a slider and a box to type the percent into.
  • Output device: pick your speakers or headset in the game. It switches at once, mid-match included. Otherwise the game follows Windows' default device, including a headset you connect mid-match. From the console: snd_device.
  • HRTF (Options > Audio, for headphones): hear whether a sound is in front or behind, above or below, not only left or right.
  • CS 1.6 and CZ falls and deaths sound as in CS 1.6:
    • a flesh hit when a fall hurts;
    • a body splat when it kills;
    • CS's death cry for every death, instead of MW2's.
  • Glass sounds as in MW2: one sound when a window cracks and one when it breaks. It sounded like an explosion before.

Console and window

  • console_style 1 makes the console look like CS2's, read from your CS2 install. 0 keeps the original.
  • In the console, Enter runs the typed line and right-click copies.
  • The console window shows warnings and script errors by default.
  • Exclusive fullscreen steps aside on Alt+Tab and Win+D, and lets the mouse go.
  • The mouse arrow no longer disappears after screenshots, Alt+Tab or NVIDIA's Alt+Z overlay.

Fixes

  • The main menu is no longer black with FSR 3 on.
  • A riot-shield script error no longer appears every match.
  • Linux:
    • Audio keeps playing through ALSA and PipeWire glitches.
    • Shaders and textures are cached in ~/.cache/iw4strike.

Known issues

  • Mice at 4000 Hz or higher can cause short freezes. Use 1000 Hz for now; a fix is planned.
  • Switching AMD FSR 3 modes quickly in the menu while taking screenshots (Win+Shift+S) can close the game: the graphics driver resets it. Pick the FSR mode first, then take screenshots.
  • With CS2, the first time each gun is drawn it can take a moment to appear.
  • Third person: the knife's animations are still a work in progress (it can point a little off in the hand), and grenades are experimental.

What you need

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam
  • Counter-Strike: Source on Steam (weapon models, sounds, HUD and the buy menu are read from your install). Without it you can select Counter-Strike: Condition Zero or Counter-Strike 1.6 instead.
  • Optional: Counter-Strike 2 on Steam, for CS2's guns (experimental). It needs one of the games above as well.

No game files are included.

How to play

Windows

  1. Download iw4Strike-v0.3.3-windows.zip and extract it to a folder you can write to (for example Desktop or Documents, not Program Files).
  2. Run iw4strike.exe. If SmartScreen warns you, click More info > Run anyway.
  3. The game folders window shows what was found. MW2, CS:S and CS2 are found through Steam automatically; if not, press Browse... and select the folder. To play with Condition Zero or CS 1.6 instead of CS:S, untick CS:S's Use box. Then press Play. Later you can change this from Manage Game Paths on the main menu.
  4. For the bomb mode, Create Game > Search and Destroy. Press B to buy. Press **** (the key under Esc) for the console, for example bot add 3`.

Linux (not tested yet)

  1. Install MW2 in Steam through Steam Play: in its Properties > Compatibility, tick Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then install it. iw4Strike only reads its files. The native Linux CS:S works.
  2. Download iw4Strike-v0.3.3-linux.tar.gz and extract it, for example to ~/Games: tar xzf iw4Strike-v0.3.3-linux.tar.gz.
  3. Run ./iw4strike from that folder. You need a Vulkan graphics driver and Ubuntu 22.04 or newer (or a similar distribution).
  4. Then the same as on Windows.

iw4Strike v0.3.2 alpha (Windows, Linux untested)

Choose a tag to compare

@Gh4zi Gh4zi released this 09 Oct 12:15

Alpha update of iw4Strike: Counter-Strike gameplay on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps, built on IW4L.

Alpha. v0.3.2 brings CS:GO's shooting, grenades, ladders and weapon drops, Condition Zero support, CS crosshair codes, 1:1 CS sensitivity and 4:3, and a big round of performance and network work.

Everyone needs to update: v0.3.2 uses network protocol 103, so it can't play with v0.3.1 or older.

New in v0.3.2

Shooting: CS:GO by default

  • shooting_mode csgo (the default): CS:GO's spray patterns (every gun's own recoil pattern), its aim kick and view shake, inaccuracy that builds when you fire, move or jump and recovers on each gun's own timing, and accurate first shots when standing still.
  • Each CS gun uses the closest CS:GO gun's numbers: M4A1 → M4A1-S, USP → USP-S, TMP → MP9, P228 → P250, M3 → Nova, MP5 → MP5-SD, Galil → Galil AR, SG552 → SG 553, Scout → SSG 08, SG550 → SCAR-20, the rest their CS:GO namesakes.
  • shooting_mode cs16 brings back CS 1.6's recoil. It's saved, and the host's setting applies to everyone on its server.

Grenades

  • Thrown like CS:GO: left click a full throw, right click a short lob, both in between. Jump-throws carry your jump, and swapping weapons right after letting go still throws.
  • CS:GO bounce physics: grenades bounce off walls and settle on the floor instead of rolling forever. CS:S bounce sounds.
  • Flashbangs work like CS:GO's: distance, where you're looking and partial flashes around corners, with CS:GO's white-out and fade. A second flash only extends the first.
  • Smoke pops once the grenade stops moving; the grenade stays in the smoke; CS:S smoke sound.

Weapons on the floor

  • G throws your gun in CS:GO's arc, about 100 units ahead. Guns fall where a player dies.
  • E picks up the gun you're looking at and swaps it for yours; walking over a gun picks it up when that slot is empty. Planting and defusing the bomb come before picking up guns.
  • G with the C4 drops the bomb for a teammate (it no longer jumps straight back to you).

Ladders: CS:GO's

  • Grab by touching the ladder, climb at CS:GO's speed, crouch or walk to climb slowly and silently, jump to push off, and walk backwards off the top to catch the ladder.

Condition Zero

  • A fourth game folder: with Condition Zero selected you get CZ's guns, sounds and HUD (CS 1.6 fills in what CZ lacks). CS:S still takes priority when it's used.
  • Dropped guns and guns in other players' hands use the CS game's own models (CZ or 1.6 when CS:S isn't used).

Aim and view

  • Crosshair: CS:GO's crosshair settings (style, size, gap, thickness, colour, outline, dot, T style), and Import CS:GO / CS2 Crosshair Code on Options > Multiplayer Options (Ctrl+V, Enter), or crosshair_code <code>.
  • Sensitivity 1:1 with CS: the same number turns exactly as in CS at FOV 90, converted for other FOVs (sensitivity_fov_match), with zoom_sensitivity_ratio and a Raw Input option. The default is CS:GO's 2.5. If you tuned your sensitivity on an older version, set it again.
  • cl_righthand 0|1 puts the gun in either hand.
  • 4:3: 1152×864, 1280×960 and 1440×1080, and Full Screen > Exclusive for stretched 4:3.
  • Max Frames Ahead (Options > Advanced Video, a low-latency alternative to NVIDIA Reflex, on any GPU): 1 keeps at most one frame queued for the GPU for the lowest input lag, like NVIDIA's Low Latency Mode; 2 (default) gives more FPS.
  • Shadows: Off / Sun only / Enabled.
  • drop and buymenu are console commands too.

Create Game

  • Enemy Bots and Friendly Bots in Game Rules > Team Options.
  • MW2's classes, killstreaks and perks are gone from the menus.
  • Players can now join a host that has bots.
  • Manage Game Paths moved to the main menu (under Options).

Fixes

  • Switching team now ends the round when it should; bodies are cleared each round.
  • Ladder sounds no longer play on metal floors; Glock burst sounds fixed.
  • CS:S M249, Galil and FAMAS, and CS 1.6's knife, are held in the right hand.
  • The game folders window no longer swaps the Condition Zero and CS 1.6 folders on save.
  • Bomb beeps no longer overlap and stop on defuse or explosion; CS:S's beep carries farther as the timer runs down.
  • Terminal and Favela: objects no longer vanish behind doorways and windows, no more red glass, the atrium tree shows, flower pots no longer float, and walking only pushes small clutter.
  • No freeze the first time a weapon is held; the loading screen stays up until the match is ready.

Performance and network

  • Higher FPS across the board on our test PC, for example 5v5 Defusal on Rust 226 → 338 FPS and Terminal 148 → 215 FPS: the server runs its tick on its own thread, the main render pass records on several threads, and Shadows Off really turns all shadows off.
  • Network snapshots are 20 to 100 times smaller (Favela 174 KB → 1.8 KB a frame), for smoother online play.

Known issues

  • Mice at 4000 Hz or higher can cause short freezes. Use 1000 Hz for now; a fix is planned.

What you need

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam
  • Counter-Strike: Source on Steam (weapon models, sounds, HUD and the buy menu are read from your install). Without it you can select Counter-Strike: Condition Zero or Counter-Strike 1.6 instead.

iw4Strike v0.3.1 alpha (Windows, Linux untested)

Choose a tag to compare

@Gh4zi Gh4zi released this 08 Oct 08:14

Alpha update of iw4Strike: Counter-Strike gameplay on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps, built on IW4L.

Alpha. v0.3.1 fixes the HUD for CS 1.6 players and adds a Linux build. It includes everything from v0.3.0: the Defusal mode with the CS C4, money and the buy menu. The game is now iw4strike.exe (your settings carry over).

The Linux build (iw4Strike-v0.3.1-linux.tar.gz) hasn't been tested yet: it is built automatically, but no one has played it on Linux. Please report what doesn't work.

New in v0.3.1

  • CS 1.6 HUD. Playing with CS 1.6 (no CS:S, or CS:S's Use box unticked), the HUD was the CS:S layout in a fallback font with no icons. It is now CS 1.6's own HUD, drawn with the sprites from your CS 1.6 install: the health cross, armor vest (and helmet), stopwatch timer, $ money with its +/- change, clip | reserve with the ammo icon, the C4 and defuse kit icons, the plant/defuse bar and the kill feed with CS 1.6's weapon icons. Numbers sit dim and light up when they change, like CS 1.6 (a little brighter at rest so they stay readable on MW2's sunny maps).
  • Linux build (not tested yet): finds MW2 and CS:S in your Steam libraries on Linux (normal, Flatpak and Snap Steam), links MW2 next to the game, uses your desktop's folder picker for Browse..., and falls back to DejaVu Sans where the HUD would use Windows fonts.

What you need

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam
  • Counter-Strike: Source on Steam (weapon models, sounds, HUD and the buy menu are read from your install). Without it you can select a Counter-Strike 1.6 install instead.

No game files are included.

How to play

Windows

  1. Download iw4Strike-v0.3.1-windows.zip and extract it to a folder you can write to (for example Desktop or Documents, not Program Files).
  2. Run iw4strike.exe. If SmartScreen warns you, click More info > Run anyway.
  3. The game folders window shows what was found. MW2 and CS:S are found through Steam automatically; if not, press Browse... and select the folder. To play with CS 1.6 instead of CS:S, untick CS:S's Use box. Then press Play.

  2. Download iw4Strike-v0.3.1-linux.tar.gz and extract it, for example to ~/Games: tar xzf iw4Strike-v0.3.1-linux.tar.gz.
  3. Run ./iw4strike from that folder. MW2 and CS:S are found in your Steam libraries (normal, Flatpak and Snap Steam). Browse... needs zenity or kdialog. You need a Vulkan graphics driver and Ubuntu 22.04 or newer (or a similar distribution).
  4. Then the same as on Windows: game folders window, Play, Create Game > Search and Destroy.

New in v0.3.0

Defusal (Search and Destroy as Counter-Strike's bomb mode, CS2 match format)

  • First to 13 rounds, 1:55 rounds. The sides switch once, after round 12; that round end freezes everyone like the freeze time.
  • 6 second freeze time at the start of each round: look around, buy and drop weapons for teammates, no moving or shooting.
  • Survivors keep their weapons and armor, restocked with full ammo like CS2. Everyone else respawns with the knife and their side's pistol (Terrorists a Glock, Counter-Terrorists a USP).
  • The round ends 7 seconds after it is decided. You can still fight, run from the bomb and save your gun. A team wiped out ends the round at once.
  • CS radio voice at the end of every round ("Terrorists win!", "Counter-Terrorists win!", "Round draw!").
  • Killcams are off for now. No escort, bomb or site markers float in the world.
  • Round-end banner in the look you pick (Options > Multiplayer Options, or cl_roundbanner css|cs16|mw2): the CS:S win panel, CS 1.6's centre message, or MW2's round outcome.

The C4

  • The Terrorist who picks up the bomb carries the CS C4 on slot 5 (CS:S model in your hands and in third person, green C4 icon on the HUD). G drops it for a teammate.
  • Hold left click with the C4 in a bomb site to plant: 3 seconds, standing still, with the C4's keypad animation and CS:S's progress bar.
  • The planted bomb is CS:S's, beeps like CS (from the bomb, louder and faster as it runs down) and blows up for 500 damage after 40 seconds. "The bomb has been planted" on the radio; the round timer goes away.
  • Counter-Terrorists hold E on it to defuse: 10 seconds, or 5 with a defuse kit ($200, equipment menu or buy defuser, kept while you survive).
  • Like CS 1.6, you can still plant (and defuse) in the pause after a round is decided; it doesn't change that round's result or money.

Money

  • CS 1.6 economy in Defusal: $800 to start, $300 per kill, round rewards and the losing-streak bonus, $16000 at most, with the CS:S money panel.
  • Free-for-all and team deathmatch buy for free and hide the money panel.

Buy menu (B)

  • The game's own buy window, read from your install: the CS:S buy menu, or the CS 1.6 one when you play with CS 1.6. Point at a gun to see its picture and numbers. Pick with the mouse or the number keys.
  • _vgui_menus 0 switches to CS 1.6's old numbered text menu (_vgui_menus 1 back). Saved with your settings.
  • In Defusal you buy near your side's spawn during the freeze time and the 20 seconds after it. Each side sells its own guns.
  • A gun bought over one in the same slot drops the old one (buy for a teammate), and a better gun comes up in your hand like CS.
  • buy <name> in the console no longer needs cheats and takes CS 1.6's short names (fn57, elites, hegren).
  • Autobuy (F1) and rebuy (F2), also as menu buttons and console commands. Ammo, night vision and the shield are no longer sold (guns come with full ammo), and the CS:S bargain button is gone.

Movement

  • mv_mode csgo is now CS:GO's own movement (the default): CS:GO stamina, crouch-spam fatigue, CS:GO ground acceleration and speed clamp, the 1.1x bunny-hop cap and slower ladders. Built from the measurements and technical reference of CSMovementRust.
  • mv_mode csgo64 / mv_mode csgo128: the same movement stepped like a 64 or 128 tick server (jump heights and bhop timing match those servers).
  • The previous default is now mv_mode css. surf, mmod and cs16 are unchanged.

Also new

  • Other players hold the CS:S weapon models in third person (and so do you in thirdperson).
  • CS ladder sounds instead of MW2's.
  • Mouse wheel switches weapons by default. To jump with it like in CS: bind MWHEELDOWN +jump.
  • E only defuses: guns are picked up by walking over them, and the MW2 "swap weapon" prompt is gone.
  • No hitmarker (the X and its sound).
  • Round timer warning only in the last 10 seconds (no one-minute warning); set its volume in Options > Audio > Round Timer Warning.
  • Create Game lists Free-for-all, Team Deathmatch and Search and Destroy; MW2's other modes are hidden.
  • No medal chime and no killstreak announcer after kills.
  • A flashbang behind you now gives a short light flash instead of nothing.
  • Counter-Strike scoreboard on TAB, in the CS:S look (or CS 1.6's).
  • Weapon switching at CS deploy times (0.75 s, AWP 1.45 s, Scout 1.25 s).
  • HE grenade explosion sound from CS:S or CS 1.6, and CS 1.6's "Fire in the hole!".
  • Faster game logic with bots: the script engine speed-up from IW4L pull request #72 by neptune (about 15-25% more fps with 12 bots on our test machine).
  • Game folders window: a Use box for Counter-Strike: Source and for CS 1.6. Untick CS:S to play with CS 1.6 even when CS:S is installed; with both ticked, CS:S is used. Your folders are kept either way.
  • The game is iw4strike.exe (was iw4l.exe); settings in iw4l-artifacts carry over.

Fixes

  • Third person: your body no longer shakes against the camera while moving fast or bunny hopping.
  • Search and Destroy no longer kicks you after a few rounds, and both teams' scores count every round.
  • Round money now pays the bomb bonuses (planted, exploded, defused).
  • Buying works during the freeze time.
  • No more god mode during the end of a round, and the round-end voice plays once.
  • Use triggers with a hint (every plant and defuse spot) could never be used with E: an engine bug, fixed.
  • Radio voice pitch: "Terrorists win", "Bomb planted" and the other announcements no longer play at odd pitches now and then.
  • Red barrels (Afghan and others) no longer explode while destructibles are off (sv_destructibles 0, the default).

Everything from v0.2.5 is still in: 24 CS guns with CS:S models and CS 1.6 damage, spread and recoil, silencers, burst fire, scopes, knife, HE / flashbang / smoke, kevlar and helmet, 100 Hz tick, the CS:S HUD with the MW2 minimap as radar, and the game folders window.

All controls and console commands: README

Known issues

  • The Linux build hasn't been tested yet.
  • Bots don't carry, plant or defuse the bomb yet.
  • Guns lying on the ground are still MW2 models. With only CS 1.6 installed, other players also still hold the MW2 gun in third person.
  • mv_mode isn't synced to other players yet, so everyone should use the same mode.
  • Smoke grenades go off twice so the cloud lasts about 18 seconds like CS:S; the smoke timer will be reworked.
  • Terminal: broken glass can turn red from some angles. Favela has rendering issues and low FPS.
  • Very loud gunfire can clip (distort).

Also new

  • Linux build (not tested yet): finds Steam on Linux, links MW2 next to the game, and uses your desktop's folder picker.

  • Without CS:S the HUD uses a fallback font and has no icons; a CS 1.6 HUD is planned.
  • Very loud gunfire can clip (distort).

iw4Strike v0.2.5 alpha (Windows)

Pre-release

@Gh4zi Gh4zi released this 07 Oct 00:45

Alpha update of iw4Strike: Counter-Strike gameplay on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 maps, built on IW4L.

⚠️ Alpha. Rounds, money, the buy menu and the bomb are not in yet.

What you need

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) on Steam
  • Counter-Strike: Source on Steam (weapon models, sounds and HUD are read from your install). Without it you can select a Counter-Strike 1.6 install instead.

No game files are included.

How to play

  1. Download iw4Strike-v0.2.5-windows.zip and extract it to a folder you can write to (for example Desktop or Documents, not Program Files).
  2. Run iw4l.exe. If SmartScreen warns you, click More info → Run anyway.
  3. The first time, the game folders window shows what was found. MW2 and CS:S are found through Steam automatically; if not, press Browse... and select the folder. Then press Play.
  4. Press **** (the key under Esc) to open the console. Try bot add 3, buy ak47andbuy vesthelm`.

New in v0.2.5

  • Game folders window instead of .env: select your MW2, Counter-Strike: Source and Counter-Strike 1.6 folders with Browse.... It opens on the first launch and whenever MW2 can't be found. Open it again any time from Options > Game Folders, the game_paths console command, or iw4l.exe paths. The folders are saved in iw4l-artifacts\settings.cfg, and the window shows the version you are running.
  • snd_ambient_volume <0-1>: how loud the map's own ambience is (wind, engines, hum). Saved with your settings.
  • Faster loading: the game only reads MW2 and never searches MW3 or Black Ops installs.

Fixes

  • Fall damage now always counts. MW2's scripts were cancelling it through a leftover class perk (Commando Pro). All MW2 perk effects are now off, as CS has no perks.
  • Fall damage sound: Counter-Strike: Source's fall sound (a different one when the fall kills you), or CS 1.6's when CS:S isn't installed. Other players hear it too.
  • Flashbang explosion sound from CS:S (or CS 1.6).
  • Walking (Shift) and crouch-walking are silent, like CS: no footsteps at 150 units/s or slower, for every player and bot.
  • Map ambience is about 9 dB quieter by default. MW2's looping map sounds stacked up to only a few dB under a rifle (Terminal's planes and engines, Highrise's wind).

Everything from v0.2.0 is still in: 24 CS guns with CS:S models and CS 1.6 damage, spread and recoil, silencers, burst fire, scopes, CS:GO-style movement (bhop, air strafe, duck-jump, plus surf / Momentum bhop / CS 1.6 modes with mv_mode), 100 Hz tick, knife, HE / flashbang / smoke, kevlar and helmet, and the CS:S HUD with the MW2 minimap as radar.

All controls and console commands: README

Known issues

  • Other players hold an MW2 gun, not the CS model, in third person (planned).
  • mv_mode isn't synced to other players yet, so everyone should use the same mode. It will become a server-side setting clients can't change.
  • Smoke grenades go off twice so the cloud lasts about 18 seconds like CS:S; the smoke timer will be reworked.
  • Flashbangs and smoke grenades don't bounce like CS grenades yet (rework planned).
  • Walking over a weapon picks it up only when its slot is empty, as in CS. With the slot taken, press F to swap. Dropping and throwing a weapon (G) will be reworked.
  • Terminal: broken glass can turn red from some angles. Favela has rendering issues and low FPS.
  • Very loud gunfire can clip (distort).
