UI Redesign
The end game cut-scenes were custom made to properly convey the different endings, while also providing a similar style of artwork. They needed to include the same elements as the game, for example the government building is a replica of that provided by the Kenney asset pack. This would not be possible if the artwork was not custom drawn. All artworks were produced in layers and merged with Adobe Photoshop.
This first piece shows the mayor overlooking his town showing that the player has not achieved a good balance for the metrics. It is not limited a single metric, and so it shows poor environmental health, poor population happiness and poor economy in the city.
This is shown when the player achieves a good balance of metrics at the balance. The effects of good decisions are reflected in this image.
This is shown when any of the player's metrics drop to zero. The game is over and it shows the citizens being unhappy with the mayor's decisions, hence overthrowing him. It shows that the central character (mayor) is no longer in control and so is unable to make anymore decisions on the town, and so the game is lost.
All custom sprites were developed with Adobe Photoshop.
The choice of style of art is to provide a cartoonish look and feel that feels complementary to the Kenney asset pack used for the 3D assets. These sprites were custom designed to fit exactly with the chosen story. For example, it would have otherwise been difficult to find a dog with a cap drawn in the same style as other NPCs.
The achievement badges were specifically colour coded to match the description of the achievement. For example, the Gold Digger badge has a gold coloured medal, and the tree hugger badge has a tree shown in the medal.
It is difficult to find three commercial use icons of similar style and colour combination that represents population happiness, environmental health and economy. As a result, these icons were created to represent the metrics.
The bridge was added to the third level to portray outward growth of the city. The asset pack used did not include a bridge, and so it was required to custom build one. The design of the bridge needed to be of a similar style to that of the assets imported from the Kenney pack. The bridge was created with Unity using block distortion and grouping.
