The OF-LL-BP is a base plate that is designed to be attached to an optical bench at the bottom, and other openFrame layers at the top. It can be used simply resting on a flat surface. A fully functional microscope system can be built without an OF-LL-BP, but some form of attachment to an optical bench is recommended in cases where external optical paths that are otherwise mechanically unconnected to the openFrame are being coupled to the microscope e.g. for a free-space laser beam, or if there is any chance of the frame being bumped or knocked over.
