Saving Links from Your Browser

The Where browser extension saves the page you're on (with a title, a note and a project) straight into Where. Saved links are clickable, searchable and listed under Links.

Works in Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi (version 116 or newer). Firefox and Safari aren't supported yet. Want to help? See Contributing.

Install the extension

  1. Get the browser-extension folder:
    • Release download: unzip Where-<version>-browser-extension.zip.
    • Already installed Where? It's included:
      • Windows: next to Where.exe (e.g. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Where\browser-extension)
      • Mac: Where.app/Contents/Resources/browser-extension
      • Linux .deb: /opt/where/browser-extension
    • Easiest: Where → Settings → Browser → Show folder.
  2. Open your browser's extensions page (chrome://extensions, edge://extensions or brave://extensions) and turn on Developer mode.
  3. Click Load unpacked and choose the browser-extension folder.
  4. Pin the Where button to the toolbar (the puzzle-piece icon → pin).

Connect it to Where (once)

  1. Make sure Where is open.
  2. Click the Where button in the browser → Connect.
  3. Where asks Connect Chrome to Where? (or your browser's name) → Allow.

Where → Settings → Browser lists connected browsers. Click Disconnect to remove one at any time.

Save a page

  • Click the Where button or press Alt+Shift+W. Edit the title, add a note, choose a project, then Save (or Ctrl+Enter).
  • Right-click a page → Save page to Where, or right-click a link → Save link to Where.
  • Saving a page that's already in Where updates it rather than adding it twice.

In Where, open Links to filter, open (Open in browser), copy or edit your saved pages. You can also add a link by hand with Add link.

Privacy

  • The extension talks only to Where on your own computer (127.0.0.1:47771). Nothing goes to the internet.
  • It reads the current page's title and address only when you click it. It never reads page contents or your history.
  • Each browser must be allowed by you in Where, and gets its own key. Websites can't talk to Where.
  • Permissions: activeTab (the page you clicked on), contextMenus (right-click items), storage (remember the connection).
