Your Data and Privacy
Where is local-first: everything lives in one file on your computer. There is no account, no cloud, no telemetry and no AI.
| Stored | Not stored |
|---|---|
| Projects, tasks, notes you create | Contents of your files |
| Links you save (title, address, your note) | Your browsing history |
| Names, paths, sizes, dates and fingerprints of files in folders you chose | Anything from folders you didn't choose |
| Connections between these | Screenshots, keystrokes, activity |
| Your theme and connected browsers | Passwords or accounts |
Settings → Privacy shows the counts and the exact database location. Cloud sync, AI features, activity tracking and screen capture are all off. Most aren't built. When they are, they'll be opt-in.
The app shows the exact path under Settings → Privacy → Database. It's usually:
| System | Folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%\CrownCore Studios\Where\ |
| Mac | ~/Library/Application Support/com.crowncorestudios.where/ |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/com.crowncorestudios.where/ |
Inside: where.db (your library, a SQLite database) and settings.json
(theme, connected browsers).
Your data is yours. Settings → Export (or Ctrl K → Export):
| Format | Good for |
|---|---|
| JSON | Everything, with every connection, readable by other programs |
| Markdown | Reading, or importing into notes apps |
| Database copy | A full backup you can open with any SQLite tool |
The Command Line can also export CSV.
- Close Where.
- Copy the data folder (above) somewhere safe, or use Export → Database copy.
- On the new computer, install Where, open and close it once, then copy
where.dbinto its data folder.
Indexed file paths point to the old computer's folders. Add your folders again on the new one and click Refresh all.
Close Where and delete the data folder. Uninstalling Where does not do this for you, on purpose.
