Troubleshooting

Can't find your problem? Open an issue and include what you tried. Check logs for private information first (names, paths, emails).

Installing and opening

Problem Fix
Windows: Windows protected your PC More info → Run anyway. The builds aren't signed yet.
Windows: VCRUNTIME140.dll was not found Use the installer or the latest portable zip (both include it).
Mac: "Where" can't be opened Right-click Where → Open → Open (first time only).
Mac: "Where" is damaged In Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Where.app
Linux: AppImage won't start chmod +x Where-*.AppImage. On Ubuntu 22.04+: sudo apt install libfuse2.
Linux: missing libgtk-3 sudo apt install libgtk-3-0 (or your distro's GTK 3 package).
Where shows an error on the loading screen Read the message. It usually names a missing file. Reinstall, or run the setup script again if you built it yourself.

Using Where

Problem Fix
A file doesn't show up Is its folder indexed? Is it hidden or inside a skipped folder (node_modules, build…)? Click Refresh all.
"That file is no longer at …" It was moved or deleted. Click Refresh all.
Search finds too much Add more words, or a filter like kind:task. See Searching.
The CLI doesn't see my app data It uses a different file by default. See Command Line.

Browser extension

Problem Fix
"Where isn't running" Open Where, then try again.
Connect does nothing Look for the Allow prompt in the Where window.
Port 47771 already in use Another copy of Where is running. Close it.
Extension disappeared Load it again: see Saving Links.

Building from source

The setup scripts log everything to %LOCALAPPDATA%\where-tools\setup-log.txt (Windows) or ~/.where-tools/setup-log.txt (Mac, Linux), and show the last lines when something fails. Running the script again fixes most problems.

Problem Fix
LNK1104: cannot open file … Where.exe Where is still open. Close it, run the script again.
No target "where_flutter" Delete apps\where_flutter\build, run again.
Developer Mode message (Windows) Settings → For developers → Developer Mode on.
Mac: "Xcode is needed" Install Xcode from the App Store, open it once, run again.
Mac: start-where.command won't open chmod +x start-where.command start-where.sh
Linux: Permission denied Run with bash start-where.sh.
