Languages

Every player reads Mo’Bosses in their own language, even the names over bosses’ heads. English, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German come bundled. This page explains how a player gets theirs and how to add one.

How a player gets their language

  1. Their own choice. A player who picked a language with /mobosses language or in the menu reads that one, while its file is there. The choice lives in plugins/MoBosses/player-languages.yml and survives restarts. /mobosses language auto hands it back to the plugin.
  2. ip: the country of the player’s IP address. locales.countries in config.yml maps languages to country codes: Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan get Russian; Spain and Latin America get Spanish; Brazil and Portugal get Portuguese; Germany, Austria, and Switzerland get German.
  3. client: the language set in the player’s game, when a file in lang/ matches it.
  4. locales.default, when nothing else matches. The console gets it too.

locales.sources sets the order of steps 2 and 3.

The country lookup needs no account and sends no address anywhere. On the first start, the plugin downloads DB-IP’s free country database (4 MB) into plugins/MoBosses/geoip/ and refreshes it every 30 days (geoip). Players who connect through a proxy or a relay show up with its address, so they get the relay’s country.

What follows the player’s language

Chat messages, ability warnings, kill and loot announcements, boss bars, the names over bosses and minions, and the names and lore of loot, in the language of the player who got it.

The game shows one name tag to everyone, so the names are text displays riding the mob, one per language among the players near it, each shown only to its readers. A boss bar works the same way: one bar per language among the boss’s viewers.

Two things come in one language for everyone, since the game shows them the same to all: death messages use locales.default, and so do achievements, unless achievements.language says otherwise.

Change a text

  1. Open plugins/MoBosses/lang/<language>.yml. It holds the messages and the names of classes, bosses, minions, and loot items.
  2. Change the text. Messages are MiniMessage; the comments above each one list its tags.
  3. Run /mobosses reload.

A key missing from a file comes from the default language, then from English. An empty text turns a message off.

Add a language

  1. Copy lang/en.yml to, say, lang/it.yml.
  2. Translate it.
  3. Add it: [ IT, SM, VA ] to locales.countries in config.yml.
  4. Run /mobosses reload.
