1.04
Since 1.02. No game data is included. You need your own Xbox disc. To update an install you already imported, replace the program (and, on Linux, lib/) and leave data/ and config/ where they are. Saves from 1.02 carry over.
Threads
The game still runs its logic on one thread at a locked 60 frames a second, but the rest of each frame's work moves to other cores, so a slower machine with several cores keeps the 60:
- Rendering has its own thread. Each finished frame is handed over and drawn, presented and synced to the display while the game runs the next frame. Paced at 60, the hand-off costs the game a few microseconds a frame, where drawing and presenting took about 80.
- Disc reads start on a worker as soon as the game asks for them, and get the rest of the frame to finish.
- Music no longer reads and decodes a whole track before it starts (or, mid-fight, when the next stem begins). A worker decodes it a little ahead of playback, queued stems start decoding as soon as they are queued, and the opening theme is decoded in the background at start-up.
- Sound effects: a character's waves are decoded in the background when the character loads, not on each wave's first hit.
- The first start's import runs in the background while its window keeps drawing.
Nothing a thread does moves a frame: a recorded session replays the same with the threads and without them, and rollback resimulation is exact. SF_THREADS=0 and SF_RENDER_THREAD=0 turn them off.
64-bit
The game no longer needs its memory below 4 GB. The last places that kept an address in a 32-bit word are fixed in the decomp, so the program is now an ordinary position-independent build with address randomisation (ASLR), on Linux and on Windows. This is also what Android requires.
Windows (64-bit Windows 10 or 11)
- Download
sf33rdsxb-windows-x86_64.zipand unzip the whole folder somewhere you can write to, such as Documents or the Desktop. Not Program Files: the game keeps its data and saves next to the exe. - Run
sf33rdsxb.exe. The program is not signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. - The first time, pick your Xbox disc in the window that opens.
It needs a graphics driver with Vulkan or OpenGL 3.3. The DLLs it uses are in the folder.
Linux (glibc 2.39 or newer: Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13, Fedora 40 or later)
- Install OpenAL, libarchive and the Vulkan loader:
- Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt install libopenal1 libarchive13t64 libvulkan1 - Fedora:
sudo dnf install openal-soft libarchive vulkan-loader - Arch:
sudo pacman -S openal libarchive vulkan-icd-loader
- Ubuntu/Debian:
- Unpack
sf33rdsxb-linux-x86_64.tar.gzand run./sf33rdsxb. SDL3 is included.
