Rocks, Geomes, and Formations

Mineralogy 6 documentation: M6 index | Player guide | OreSpawn provider

Mineralogy 6 gives OreSpawn a catalogue of 32 active rock choices. Twenty-six are Mineralogy materials and six are suitable vanilla blocks. The catalogue is divided into four geological families.

The preferred Y values come from the current reference provider. They are selection peaks, not fixed layers. Each rock also has a depth spread, a general weight, hard height limits, and per-geome weights.

Familiar Minecraft rocks

Minecraft now supplies andesite, basalt, diorite, granite, tuff, and sandstone. Mineralogy uses those vanilla blocks in its default modern formations.

Mineralogy's historical versions of overlapping rocks remain registered so old saves continue to resolve. Worldgen aliases affect the state chosen for new terrain; they do not delete or rename blocks stored in an existing world.

From biome to formation

OreSpawn's Sky engine chooses underground geology in stages:

  1. The surface biome contributes geological preferences.
  2. Broad regional noise helps choose a geome.
  3. The geome changes the weights of the four rock families.
  4. Depth preferences help select an individual rock.
  5. Formation controls shape where that rock continues.

The result is related to the surface without copying biome borders straight down. A geological region can extend across several surface biomes, and a biome border does not have to become a vertical underground wall.

Geomes

The standard OreSpawn profile includes:

  • stable craton;
  • mountain belt;
  • volcanic arc;
  • sedimentary basin;
  • coastal shelf;
  • arid basin;
  • wetland basin;
  • glacial highland.

Mineralogy's rocks apply different weights to those regions. Volcanic rocks favour volcanic arcs, several metamorphic and intrusive rocks favour mountain belts or stable cratons, and sedimentary materials favour the appropriate basins and shelves.

Stable formations

New Mineralogy 6 worlds should normally use Sky with the stable_layers algorithm. Formation settings control:

  • horizontal size;
  • vertical thickness;
  • waviness;
  • edge irregularity;
  • continuity.

These controls make broad bending layers and regions rather than a noisy mix of small pockets. Presets provide sensible linked values, while custom settings allow each aspect to be tuned independently.

The older sky_v1 algorithm exists for migrated profiles. It is not the recommended choice for a new pack.

Cyano legacy layers

Cyano (Legacy) uses the classic Mineralogy layer engine with the current rock catalogue. Its main controls are region size, layer reach, and layer thickness.

Use it when keeping an existing world's chosen engine or when the classic Mineralogy look is wanted. Use Sky with stable layers for the normal modern experience.

Dimensions

The Overworld is the only default terrain-replacement dimension. The Nether, End, and modded dimensions remain untouched unless a pack deliberately adds:

  • an enabled terrain-dimension entry;
  • valid replacement hosts;
  • rock rules that allow that dimension.

An unconfigured dimension is skipped. Do not add a dimension just by copying an Overworld entry without checking its native terrain blocks and biomes.

Changing the geology

Use the world-creation screen for a single new world. Use OreSpawn's global profile or a template for a pack.

Mineralogy's own mineralogy-common.toml does not control rock placement.
