Epic 1: Foundation (stages 1a to 1d)

Epic 1 turned Mumcord into a usable daily client for one Mumble server at a time. It was delivered in four stages. Everything works with unmodified, standard Mumble servers. See Features for the full feature list and Roadmap for what comes next.

Stage Theme Released as
1a Everyday client v0.1.0 (alpha), v0.1.1
1b Chat features v0.2.0
1c In-game v0.3.0
1d Mumcord to Mumcord and people v0.3.0

Hotfix v0.3.1 fixed two problems: voice packets with Music quality now fit Mumble's size limit, and chat links open again from the Linux AppImage.

Stage 1a: Everyday client (v0.1.0, v0.1.1)

What you get:

  • A first-start wizard (name, microphone) and an identity (client certificate) that is kept in your system's secure storage. You can import an existing certificate.
  • Adding servers; the server's certificate is trusted on first use, and a changed certificate blocks the connection with a clear warning.
  • Channel list, text chat with formatting and pasted images, and following channels to read them without joining.
  • Voice with AI noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain, push-to-talk and voice activation, mute and deafen, per-person volume.
  • A new connection starts read-only (muted and deafened) until you join a channel.
  • Registration, avatars and comments; automatic reconnect with a fallback from UDP to TCP, and bitrate that adapts to a poor connection.
  • Tray icon, mumble:// links, notification sounds, light and dark themes, three languages, keyboard operation, and connection diagnostics.
  • Test builds for Linux, Windows and macOS.
  • v0.1.1 adds a Music quality switch.

Known limits at this stage: the Mumble 1.3 server was not tested live; Linux tray tooltips are not shown; some manual checks (global push-to-talk on Wayland, Windows and macOS, screen readers) were still open when the stage was reported.

Stage 1b: Chat features (v0.2.0)

  • Code highlighting, a formatting toolbar with shortcuts, link previews.
  • YouTube, Twitch and Spotify cards (players load only after a click); external images inline, with an image viewer (zoom, pan, save).
  • GIF links with favorites and a "via GIPHY" or "via Tenor" credit. There is no GIF search yet.
  • Dismissable cards with automatic clean-up of cached previews.
  • @mentions with autocomplete, ping sound and switches; a manual voice activation threshold; "Now playing" status (Linux and Windows, not macOS).
  • One privacy switch controls link previews and external images (on by default).
  • From this version Mumcord is licensed under AGPL-3.0 (earlier versions stay MIT).

Stage 1c: In-game (v0.3.0)

  • In-game overlay on Linux showing who is talking (works with Steam and Proton; switched on per game; off by default for games with anti-cheat).
  • Window overlay: a click-through window showing who is talking in your channel.
  • "Now gaming" status with the game you play.
  • Quick settings, settings search and accessibility switches.
  • Positional audio and game plugins (Beta, off by default).

Not shipped: the in-game overlay on Windows (the window overlay is used there for now) and any overlay on macOS.

Stage 1d: Mumcord to Mumcord and people (v0.3.0)

  • Person menu with "Join channel" and a full profile with a private note.
  • Friends with online state, shown in the right-hand column.
  • Collapsible member sections for people in other channels.
  • Chat history sync between Mumcord users (on by default, can be switched off).
  • Full-size images on demand (Beta) and dropping image files into the chat.
  • All 24 official EU languages (not yet reviewed by native speakers) and a privacy step in the setup wizard.

Not shipped: cancelling a running full-size image transfer, and "Join channel" for friends on another connected server. Both move to Epic 2.
