Means-to-end diagrams are a tool to help you plan and conceptualise how you will use MCAS-S to address a spatial problem. It also helps you identify which criteria need to be considered in the multi-criteria analysis (MCA) model and what types of input data will be needed to model those criteria. The following is an example of a simple means-to-end diagram from the MCAS-S user guide to model 'where' soils are most at risk of degradation.
The following figure shows an example of a means-to-end diagram built with the Compendium software using the customised stencils that reflect the buttons in MCAS-S. This means-to-end diagram is for a model of 'soil productivity'.
If you double-click on the first criteria 'Water balance' then you can see the sub-model shown in the following figure. Then if you also double-click on the 'What's the story' node you can see an explanation.
If you double-click on the 'Evidence' list node it brings up a table with a list of reference documents.
You can then open them, such as this PDF of a scientific paper that describes the method used to calculate the Prescott Index.
If you double-click on the 'Classify' Notes node it brings up a window with the classes and the Prescott index cut-offs for each class (this can also be exported from MCAS-S when you're building the model).

There are several different versions of Compendium available. We recommend you install Compendium 2.0 beta as it is meant to be the most stable. To install Compendium, go to http://projects.buckinghamshum.net/compendiuminstitute/download/downloadresearch.htm.
Below are instructions for the install of Compendium 2 Beta 1:
Step 1. Install Compendium 2.0
During the install, when you see a screen with the title 'NOTES ON JAVA' .. DO NOT INSTALL JAVA! UNTICK THE BOX BELOW. Compendium assumes Java is not installed and installs an old version. Most PC’s already have Java installed, and if not, the latest Java edition can be installed from https://www.java.com/en/.
Step 2. Install the patch
Once Compendium has been installed, download the patch from the same web address (which comes in a zip file). There are two files in the zip and they need to be extracted and copied into the System\lib your Compendium installation folder.
For example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Compendium\System\Lib
Replace the compendium.jar and the compendiumcore.jar found in this folder with the contents of the zip file.
Now you should be able to launch Compendium.
Step 3. Create a login name and default project
There are instructions here on how to launch Compendium for the first time.
Step 4. Adding the MCAS-S Stencil
To create the customised means-to-end diagrams using the MCAS-S icons you need to download this zipped up stencil folder. Then unzip the 'MCASS_Project' folder into the following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Compendium\System\resources\Stencils.
Make sure you specify the correct path when unzipping (see below).
When you next open Compendium the stencil will be available when you select the following menu item: 'Tools > Open Stencil > MCASS_Project'.
The MCAS-S Compendium stencil is shown in the following figure. If you drag and drop the first icon into the work area it will create a 'map' node that contains an example of an MCAS-S means-to-end diagram (shown below).
