Highlights

First general-availability release of the QuantaStor storage plugin for Proxmox VE.

  • VM disks and LXC containers on QuantaStor iSCSI block volumes, from one storage entry.
  • Registers a first-class PVE storage type (quantastor) — no PVE core files are patched.
  • Supported on PVE 9.1.x and 9.2.x.
  • Upgrading from 0.2.x is just dpkg -i — no configuration changes required.

Added since 0.2.1

  • LXC container support (rootdir content type) — block-based container root filesystems, the same model as RBD and LVM-thin.
  • Filesystem-consistent snapshots of running containers via volume_snapshot_needs_fsfreeze.
  • Restart migration for containers between cluster nodes.
  • Extra mount points on QuantaStor storage.
  • pct fstrim discard passthrough.
  • Unprivileged containers.
  • Web UI: the Content selector is now a multi-select offering Disk image and Container, both preselected on the Add dialog.

Fixed since 0.2.1

  • Thin provisioning is now the default. volume_create sends thinProvisioned explicitly — an absent boolean meant thick, so every volume was previously 100% space-reserved. The sparse option in storage.cfg was dead code and is now honored (default on).
  • No more uninstall warning on package upgrade. prerm warns about leftover storage.cfg entries only on actual removal.
  • Snapshot rollback and template conversion no longer fail after a guest stop. Session waits now default to 200s so they outlast QuantaStor's session-manager refresh cycle, which has a hardcoded 180s floor. Shorter waits failed deterministically, and the failed task left a rollback lock that blocked every subsequent start.
  • Clones no longer fail about half the time. activate_volume retries the ACL add through transient 5xx responses: QuantaStor serves a clone as an async ZFS "instant replica" and can return the volume before SCST has created its iSCSI target.
  • More robust volume deletion. free_image falls back to per-snapshot deletion when a cascade delete fails or partially completes, and retries through brief post-teardown busy windows.

Compatibility

  • Declares storage api() = 13. Loads on PVE 9.1.x (exact match) and 9.2.x (with a cosmetic "older storage API" notice). PVE 8.4.0 is not supported (its APIVER is 11).
  • Container templates (vztmpl) are not supported — a block LUN cannot hold template tarballs, the same limitation RBD has. Keep templates on file-based storage such as local.
  • Use a current QuantaStor 7 build. Older 7.0 builds wedge volumes on template conversion and can refuse deletion of a freshly created snapshot for several minutes — see the err=493 section of the README.

Install

dpkg -i pve-storage-quantastor_1.0.0-1_all.deb

PVE services are restarted automatically by postinst, and dpkg triggers re-inject the UI panel and pool-scan endpoint after future pve-manager / pve-storage upgrades. Run it on every node in the cluster.

v0.2.1 — err=26 auth fix

Fixed

  • Authentication failures — [err=26] Authentication check failed — when adding or activating QuantaStor storage. The plugin authenticated using LWP challenge-response, which attaches the Authorization header only after the appliance issues a 401 WWW-Authenticate: Basic challenge whose realm matches exactly. Many QuantaStor versions answer an unauthenticated API request with an err=26 body under HTTP 200 instead of a challenge (and the realm string varies across versions), so the client sent no credentials and the appliance rejected the request — indistinguishable from a wrong password even when the password was correct (curl -u against the same appliance worked). The client now sends HTTP Basic credentials preemptively on every request, matching curl. No configuration change is required — just upgrade the plugin.

Install

Download pve-storage-quantastor_0.2.1-1_all.deb and run on each PVE node:

dpkg -i pve-storage-quantastor_0.2.1-1_all.deb

Supported on Proxmox VE 9.1 and 9.2.

Install on every node; postinst restarts PVE services and registers triggers so the UI panel and pool-scan endpoint survive pve-manager/pve-storage upgrades.

Highlights

  • Full VM disk lifecycle: create, snapshot, rollback, online resize, clone, template
  • iSCSI initiator lifecycle managed automatically (login/logout/rescan)
  • Web UI dialog: storage-ID auto-fill, pool scan dropdown, content type locked to Disk image
  • Credentials stored in pmxcfs (/etc/pve/priv/storage/<id>.pw), never in storage.cfg
  • Validated on PVE 9.1.x and 9.2.x, including two-node cluster live migration

Compatibility

Loads on PVE 9.1.x and 9.2.x (declares api=13). Not supported on 8.4.x.

pre-release quantastor proxmox plugin
Key Features
• ZFS-over-iSCSI provisioning – Seamlessly create and manage QuantaStor-backed ZFS volumes for Proxmox VM disks directly from the Proxmox VE interface.
• ZFS snapshots and clones – Leverage QuantaStor’s ZFS snapshot and clone APIs to manage VM disk snapshots and clones natively through Proxmox workflows.
• Cluster-aware design – Designed for multi-node Proxmox VE clusters, ensuring consistent storage configuration and behavior across all nodes.
• VM migration support – Enables live migration of virtual machines between Proxmox nodes using shared QuantaStor-backed storage.
• Thin and thick provisioning – Choose between thin-provisioned volumes for efficient capacity utilization or fully reserved volumes for predictable performance.
• API-driven storage management – Deep integration with the QuantaStor API for automated provisioning, monitoring, and storage status reporting.
• Configuration validation – Built-in preflight checks help detect common misconfigurations early, reducing deployment errors and troubleshooting time.
