en.Installation HyperV

Jens Maus edited this page Oct 4, 2026 · 3 revisions

Hyper-V is Microsoft's virtualization solution and functionally the counterpart to VMware ESXi or Workstation. It is available on Windows 10/11 Pro/Enterprise (as a "role/feature") as well as on Windows Server.

Important

Hyper-V cannot pass through USB devices from the host to virtual machines. For OpenCCU, a network-based radio connection must therefore be used – e.g. the HB-RF-ETH in combination with a radio module (RPI-RF-MOD) or a BidCos-RF LAN gateway (classic HomeMatic only, no Homematic IP / Homematic IP Wired).

Requirements

  • Hyper-V as a role/feature on Windows 10/11 Pro/Enterprise or on a Windows Server.
  • For the virtual machine: 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM and a virtual disk with at least 6 GB (recommended: 8 GB).
  • The latest OpenCCU *.ova from the releases section.
  • Since Hyper-V cannot import OVA/VMDK files, extract the OVA (e.g. with 7-Zip) and convert the contained OpenCCU.vmdk into VHD/VHDX, e.g. with the StarWind V2V Converter or with qemu-img convert -O vhdx OpenCCU.vmdk OpenCCU.vhdx.

Installation

  1. Provide the VHD(X) Place the converted VHD/VHDX on the Hyper-V host (default: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks – any other path is also possible).

  2. Create the VM In the Hyper-V Manager console, select New → Virtual Machine… and define the name and location. Name and path

  3. Select the generation Select Generation 1. Generation

  4. Memory & network In the wizard, select 2048 MB of memory and the appropriate virtual switch (external network).

  5. Assign the virtual disk Select Use an existing virtual hard disk and specify the path to the VHD/VHDX. Select VHD

  6. Save the VM & enlarge the disk After creating the VM, select it in Hyper-V Manager → Settings… → Hard Drive → Edit… and choose Expand. Define a sufficient size (recommended 8 GB). Edit VHD Expand VHD VHD size

  7. First start / diagnosis Start the VM. The console display may only show a blinking cursor. With ALT + F2, additional information on the startup can be displayed to identify errors if necessary. After a successful start, the WebUI is accessible at http://openccu/ (or the IP address assigned via DHCP). Then integrate the HB-RF-ETH under Settings → Control panel → Advanced settings → IP address (HB-RF-ETH) (see HB-RF-ETH Connection) or configure the LAN gateway. Afterwards, the first steps after installation help with the further setup.

Updates

Updates are performed as usual via the WebUI. Use the matching *-ova.zip from the releases section for this purpose.

Uninstallation

Information on uninstallation can be found under Uninstallation.
