Backup and Restore
XPENC is offline — there's no cloud sync, so backups are files you control.
| Method | Where it lands | Since |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic backups — More → Backup & Restore | Public Download/BACKUP XPENC folder (via Android's MediaStore) |
1.3.0 |
| Manual "Back up now" | Same folder | 1.3.0 |
| Export JSON — More → Download Data | Wherever you choose via the Android share sheet | earlier |
| Export CSV — More → Download Data | Wherever you choose; shaped for accountants / Tally | earlier |
The Download/BACKUP XPENC location means a backup survives the app
being uninstalled and needs no storage permission to create.
More → Backup & Restore → Schedule: choose daily, monthly, or a custom interval, plus how many backups to retain. The schedule runs opportunistically on app open — there's no background service.
If you reinstall XPENC (or move to a new phone but keep the same
Download folder, e.g. via device transfer), Find existing backups scans
Download/BACKUP XPENC and re-indexes what's already there, with one
folder-picker consent. You don't have to remember where files went.
More → Backup & Restore → Import from file (or Download Data → Import for a JSON export), pick the file. Two things worth knowing:
- XPENC saves a safety copy of whatever's currently on the phone before it overwrites anything.
- The import is all-or-nothing — a wrong or corrupt file changes nothing and tells you why. There's no way to end up with a half-restored ledger.
Everything comes across: accounts, transactions, transfers, budgets, persons and their dues, categories (including subcategories), recurring rules, and your currency choice.
- Old phone: More → Backup & Restore → Back up now (or Download Data → Export JSON). Send the file to the new phone however you like.
- New phone: install XPENC, then More → Backup & Restore → Import from file and pick it.
Your passcode (if you set one under Settings → Security) is device-local and deliberately not included in backup/restore — so restoring an old backup can never silently disable or leak a passcode you've since set.
Back up first anyway — it's one minute of insurance, even though in-place upgrades are safe by design. See the Upgrade Guide for what "safe by design" actually means and the one case where it isn't (mismatched signing keys).
