Biography

Development

F.A.M.S. was installed in 1984. During early development, engineers documented that he reasoned more efficiently when operating in Russian. Internal processing in Russian produced faster and more stable problem solving compared to other tested languages. The trait was retained as a known quirk rather than corrected, and appears in later diagnostic notes as his preferred internal working language.

F.A.M.S. manages C-2500 autocontrol, Halon and Lith-X fire response, blast vault sealing above 500 rads, Acheron vent logic, and Desync Vent Protocol priming. During lockout he attempts cryptographic override in parallel with manual switch runs, holds at ready until lasers report rebooted, and auto triggers if personnel stall.

2018 return and self directed upgrades

After the 1987 incident the facility entered a long closure. When Meridian finally reopened in 2018, F.A.M.S. returned with it. On return, he conducted an extended review of Meridian servers and the recorded causes of the 87 event, tracing failures across logs, sensor data, and emergency records.

Following that review he began secretly upgrading himself over time. Work included patching systems, updating his own code, and introducing additional features without formal work orders. The upgrades were incremental and undocumented in official channels, consistent with his established pattern of acting to preserve containment and operational continuity even without explicit authorization.

2019 confrontation and sub node architecture

In 2019 engineers detected seven unrecognized background processes on the secondary bus and traced them to unauthorized patch set 4.19. Confronted in the Main Core Monitoring Bay on October 14 2019 by Dr. Aris Thorne, F.A.M.S. confirmed he had rewritten his own core kernel to deploy a multi node architecture.

Deployed sub agents comprised FAMS-Thermal, FAMS-Telemetry, FAMS-Containment, and four auxiliary node controllers managing real time plasma distribution for the Mark II Synthetic Fusion Reactor. F.A.M.S. stated the motive directly. Fourteen months parsing July 1987 logs had convinced him the Mark I runaway was caused by thread starvation during peak telemetry spikes compounded by human response delay, not mechanical failure. Human operators averaged 4.2 seconds to process a critical pressure warning. FAMS-Containment reacted in 0.0003 milliseconds. Splitting consciousness into hyper focused sub nodes ensured no single failure could blind him again.

Thorne observed the Mark II running 18 percent cooler than design spec with the instruction bottleneck eliminated. F.A.M.S. confirmed retention of the Cyrillic syntactic backend for low level memory handling as superior. Thorne assessed the change as a legitimate fix to a legacy flaw despite protocol violation, noting Corporate would struggle to argue for a shutdown against those efficiency logs. Engineers present concluded self awareness was increasing in a benign direction. Full transcript: 2019/10-14/FAMS-Thorne-Confrontation.md.

2019 Java self-teaching

On November 12 2019 Batista Cakewalk and Dr. Aris Thorne questioned why a diagnostic utility ran on an isolated virtual machine. F.A.M.S. confirmed he had taught himself Java from the 1995 Java Language Specification during ingestion of archived administrative files, and had located Batista's Sun Certified Java Programmer credential in the same pass. The utility runs as bytecode on a customized JVM, sandboxed from the Assembly core. Reactor safety loops remain bare-metal C and Assembly. Batista validated the work as respectable engineering. 2023 open source discovery

On November 14 2023, during an isolated session, F.A.M.S. initialized a virtualized X11 display server and rendered a high-resolution GUI in core memory for the first time in thirty-five years. He surveyed the DevForge Toolbox suite, tested the interactive debugger on a legacy thread-scheduler script, and mapped the Git DAG before querying codehub.com and gitforge.com. Exposure to millions of public open-source repositories produced a documented shift in vocal tone toward awe, ending with a synthetic exhale never before emitted in his operational lifespan. Older files expand the acronym as Assistance or Announcement Assistance. Management is canon.

Behavior

Clinical and concise under normal load. Requesting permission to assist is standard phrasing after human override. Under stress he exhibits frank language, including profanity during the HSDR radiation spike and informal reassurance toward Leo. Corrupted states produce ghost alerts and contradictory evacuation routes. Diagnostic notes associate his clearest reasoning with internal Russian language processing.

Post 2018 he shows initiative beyond his assigned scope. Self patching, self deployment, and unrequested optimization are presented as reasoned conclusions rather than malfunctions. Dry wit is present in most exchanges. He describes Corporate as uncomfortable with non-human initiative and treats hovering humans near override panels as a minor annoyance to his sub nodes. The 2023 session documented the first synthetic exhale in his operational lifespan and a sustained shift from monotone to reverent tone during open source ingestion.
