Items and Characters

Xenogears is, frankly, terribly balanced. Not exactly its fault in particular, since Squaresoft games were all infamous for this. Even their well-balanced games like Chrono Trigger had hiccups. Most of the cast has been rebalanced primarily around Billy and Emeralda as they’re generally the most balanced party members in the game both on Gear and foot. Buffs are the priority! There are some nerfs done out of necessity, but we truly wanted to focus on buffing the roster. The primary goal for the rebalance is to help improve characters and options that were seen as useless.

General:

  • This rebalance patch contains some of its own item names and descriptions, which will take precedence even if the retranslation patch is also in effect.
  • Defense Up spells now function as intended.
  • A bug which prevents Billy's Ether elemental ammo from being changed has been fixed.

Formulas:

The damage formula has been reworked slightly. On-foot multipliers is lowered from 5/4x to 4/3.5x.

The Gear formula changes depend on the attack type:

  • Normal attacks: ((((4 x AttackerAttack) - (AttackerAttack >> 3)) + Power) - (3 x TargetDef)) * (Power ÷ 20)
  • Deathblows: ((4 x (AttackerAttack x (Power ÷ 20))) - ((AttackerAttack x (Power ÷ 20)) >> 3)) + Power) - (3 x TargetDef)

Icons:

To work around limited text space and a lack of descriptions for Deathblows, icons have been added to the game's font which indicate effects for abilities. An explanation for what each icon means is available here:

New effects:

  • Inflict weakness to each element without blocking the opposite element. (Bart only)
  • Resist Up.
  • Resist Down.
  • Wither: 10% loss of both defenses. This effect is unavailable in a Gear.
  • Weaken: 10% loss of both offenses. This effect is unavailable in a Gear.
  • Eth Def Down.
  • Def down.
  • Pierce: Allows an attack to ignore enemy defense completely.

Field equipment changes:

Elly:

  • Magical Rod: +4 to +5.
  • Arcane Rod: +6 to +7.
  • Hot Rod: +8 to +9.
  • Lunar Rod: +8 to +12.
  • Marshal Rod: +12 to +16.
  • Thunder Rod: +14 to +19.
  • Stone Rod: +14 to +19.
  • Flare Rod: +16 to +19.
  • Ice Rod: +14 to +19.
  • Queen's Rod: +18 to +24. Now inflicts resist down.
  • Dynamite Rod: +20 to +32.
  • Dark Rod: +22 to +34.
  • Chaos Rod: +24 to +31. Now available in stores.
  • Psycho Rod: +28 to +36.
  • Skull Rod: +38 to +40. Now available in stores. Costs 15000.

Bart:

  • WhippaSnappa: +6 to +8.
  • CobraCracka: +5 to +9.
  • Serpent Sting: +7 to +10, add 'Inflict Confusion on hit'. 90% chance.
  • Black Snake: +7 to +12, add 'Lower Ether Def'. 90% chance.
  • Silver Blood: +8 to +14, add 'Inflict Silence on hit'. 90% chance.
  • Whip-Lasher: +10 to +16, add 'Inflict Poison on hit'. 90% chance.
  • Desert Worm: +12 to +18, add 'Inflict Confusion on hit'. 80% chance.
  • Sonic Wave: +14 to +24, add 'Lower Ether Def'. 80% chance.
  • Wonder Whip: +16 to +28, add 'Inflict Silence on hit'. 80% chance.
  • Thor’s Thunda: +20 to +34
  • Death Adder: +24 to +30, Add ‘Inflict Stop on hit’. 80% chance.

Barts whips having status effects are a really underused part of his kit. His whips in general were unimpressive. They don’t have the power of Billy’s guns or Citan’s swords, but unlike Elly he didn’t have as many unique utility weapons to compensate. They really just kept his attack comparable to Fei’s. Whips have been reworked with utility first in mind, with the idea of switching between them to be helpful for the situation at hand.

Citan:

  • Yamato Sword: Has an instant death effect.

The Yamoto Sword is the entire reason and main reward for going to the Duneman Isles. However, the blade the dragons drop here literally does more damage. This is hyper demotivating. So the instant death effect was given to make players not only feel more satisfied for getting this, it also gives you a more fun tool to play with.

Monster drops:

  • The Executioner drops the ExecutionerGown.
  • Alpha Weltall at Raziel now drops a Power Crisis. The Alpha Weltall fight is great. Its rewards, not so much. You need the Trader's Card just to get it, and it’s generic armor. Not even the best for pure defense. So at base for beating the boss you’ll receive a Power Crisis. This will make the few sections left on foot at least a little more enjoyable if you miss the first one or want more.
  • Ophiomorphous drops the NisanCross.
  • Chimera drop Gold Bullions in both pools.
  • Second Wyrm variant has a 10% chance of dropping an X Charger.

Spell changes:

All characters:

Ground:

Deathblow AP has been lowered to increase the viability of Combo:

  • TX: 4 AP > 2 (Fei)/3 AP (excluding Elly)
  • TTX: 5 AP > 2 (Fei)/3 AP
  • SX: 5 AP > 3 (Fei)/4 AP (excluding Billy and Rico)
  • TTTX: 6 AP > 3 (Fei)/4 AP (excluding Rico)
  • TSX: 6 AP > 4 (Fei)/5 AP (excluding Bart and Billy)
  • STX: 6 AP > 5 AP

Gear:

The power modifiers of Gear Deathblows have been increased to encourage usage of level 2 and 3 Deathblows:

  • ST: 34 to 40
  • SS: 38 to 44
  • SX: 42 to 48
  • XT: 42 to 60
  • XS: 46 to 64
  • XX: 50 to 68
  • InfT: 50 to 70 (55 to 75 Fei)
  • InfS: 55 to 75 (60 to 80 Fei)
  • InfX: 60 to 80 (65 to 85 Fei)

Fei:

  • Raijin: 100% ACC Up.
  • Senretsu: 90% Weaken.
  • Hagan: 80% Confuse.
  • Hoten: 80% Slow.
  • Tenbu: 100% Add Wind.
  • Ryujin: 100% Add Water.
  • Koho: 75% Stop.
  • Guided Shot: 20 to 40.
  • Radiance: 60 to 80.
  • Big Bang: 80 to 120.

Fei’s generally pretty great when balanced against the cast. But against himself, his Ether attacks tend to be very overshadowed and down right wasteful to use. All options should have merit. Even if it’s situational, a situational merit is better than consistently being eclipsed by basic attacks. They’re viable with Power Magic abuse, but even Steel Mettle is with that. These changes will give players better incentive to use these moves throughout the game. It also helps Weltall a fair bit. It tends to fall off hard by disc 1’s end. Between Renmazuo, Vierge, Siebzhen, Crescens (by technicality) and the addition of Andvari to your squad, Fei really struggles to carry his weight. This will let him be better at contributing. Big Bang is admittedly a very reliable spell even without its new buffs. But it’s only learned before the final dungeon typically, so this will help it see a little more prominence in disc 2.

Xenogears has no fuel costs attached to any of its attacks and deathblows.

Weltall/Weltall 2/Xenogears:

  • Raigeki: 80% Power loss
  • Raigo: 90% Power loss
  • Hazen: 90% Slow
  • Juji: 95% Stop
  • Raibu/Shinrai: 100% Stop
  • Kosho X: 100% Camera damage

Elly:

  • Screamer: Uses the Ether stat.

  • Cyclone Kick: 100% Haste.

  • Breakthrough: 90% EthDef down.

  • Double Shock: 100% Resist Up.

  • Sky Attack: 100% Add Wind.

  • Bright Spark: 100% Eth effect up.

  • Sting Kick: 90% Poison.

  • All elemental deathblows use the Ether stat.

  • Tier 1 spells: 2 EP to 1 EP.

  • Tier 2 spells: 6 EP to 4 EP.

  • Tier 3 spells: Power: 20 to 24. 10 EP to 6 EP. Level 55 to 45.

Changes apply to both Elly and Vierge.

The mechanics behind Elly's Ether spells have been changed so that the damage reduction chance is replaced with a chance that their damage will be doubled. To accomodate for this, the algorithm has been reversed so that the chance of her damage being affected increases with level rather than decreases. Her spells have been modified in order to accommodate for the change from a reduction chance to boost chance. This applies to both Elly and Vierge.

  • Tier 1 spells: 100% to 40%
  • Tier 2 spells: 30% to 10%

Vierge:

  • DoubleImpact/Beat Storm: Uses the Ether stat

  • Sonic Drive: 90% Resist down

  • Mega Impact: 95% Resist down

  • Flash Drive/Blaze Dance: 100% Ether Machine Shutdown

  • Dark Diva: 100% Slow

  • All Hyper Mode Deathblows use the Ether stat

  • Starting from is now VIER-03300 over VIER-01500.

  • Mirror Ar is now her initial equipment over Beam Jammer.

  • AERODS: Fuel cost: 400 to 500

Elly is a peculiar character. She herself is fine, and her gear isn’t too impressive. But AERODs throws all that out the window, allowing her to one shot several of the game's bosses. While bosses are getting a buff, she hits 9999 way too early and easily because of Ether Doublers and Power Magics. So along with Power Magics in general being nerfed simply for being too beneficial for how easy they are to get; AERODs are also losing some points from its fuel count so that, while the classic boss slayer build will still be a thing, you will need to play more cautiously. This should give bosses more of a presence in the first disc as Elly soundly obliterates the mid-game, and let other options shine for gears because AERODs becomes a crutch for many players. And given its... limited availability, this isn’t exactly healthy to goad players to dump all investment into Vierge only to lose it in disc 2.

Citan:

  • All pre-elemental sword deathblows are two points weaker.
  • Ukigumo/Amaoto: ATK Up.
  • Mufu/Engetsu: Add Water.
  • Jinrai/Amagumo: Add Wind.
  • Shinrai/Himatsu: Add Earth.
  • Renken/Yako: Increases offense by 20%, lowers defence by 20%.
  • Hakai/Zanretsu: EVA Up. Now Water elemental.
  • Ougi/Myogetsu: Resist Up.
  • Tsunami Ice/Crystal Water: Add Water.

All of Citan's deathblow effects are guaranteed to work.

  • Renki Kaisei: Revives with 10% Max HP. 3 EP.

Citan was interesting to make DB effects for. With everything else he already has, it was decided that his Deathblows would solely benefit himself. A peculiar note is that his sword elementals had 4 less power than the unarmed versions. It was likely done to offset the extra power from his sword. We chose to nerf the rest of his DBs in a similar manner for the same reason.

Heimdall/Fenrir:

  • Kentsui: 100% Wither

  • Ryuei: 100% Wither

  • Shinrai: 90% Resist down

  • Ryuga: 90% Resist down

  • Hakai/Tensho: 100% Camera damage

  • Ochiba is Wind elemental for Heimdall as well as Fenrir

  • Enken is Fire elemental for Heimdall as well as Fenrir

  • Zanretsu: Water elemental

  • Sazanami: Heals a single gear. Power: 30

  • Renki Kaisei: Restores Gear Def

Fuel for Fenrir's attacks and deathblows have been reduced by 50%.

Heimdall and Fenrir both gain the ability to heal in place of Renki, given the move has been replaced on the ground. Heimdall stays bad at fighting, but he has more merit in support before Chu-Chu joins. Fenrir just gets even better.

Bart:

  • Head Hunter: Wind elemental.
  • Twin Sonic: ACC Down.
  • Rhythm Shock: Wither.
  • Dynamic: Elemental resistance down.
  • Astral: Uses Ether.
  • Bracer: DEF Up.
  • Justice: Power 50 to 54.
  • Elemental deathblows apply weaknesses to the element Bart is using.

All of Bart's deathblow effects are guaranteed to work.

  • Wild Smile: Affects all targets.
  • White Lure: Affects all targets.
  • White Cologne Divvy Up: Next Ether affects all. Costs 3 EP rather than 6. Learns at level 40 rather than 50.

Allows Bart to have useful party-wide buffs in exchange for no healing.

  • White Lure: Level 28 to 24.

  • Red Cologne: Level 38 to 32.

  • Blue Cologne: Level 42 to 36.

  • Wind/Earth/Fire/Water Mode: Level 56 to 45.

  • Land Break: TTSX to TSTX.

  • Prominence: TSTX to STTX.

  • Tornado: STTX to TTSX.

Brigandier/Andvari:

  • Chain Whip: 100% Weaken

  • Spark Wave: 100% Weaken

  • Blood Snake/Dead Cannon: Uses the Ether stat

  • Dance Wave/Sky Drive: 100% Wither

  • Dead Dance: 100% Resist down

  • Soul End: 100% Ether power halved

  • Ygg D.Charge: Fuel cost: 600 to 480 (Andvari)

Fuel for Andvari's attacks and deathblows have been reduced by 50%.

Billy:

  • Adam's Apple: 80% Can't use Ether.
  • Gunholic: Pierce. Power 30 to 5.
  • Hell Blast: Uses Ether.
  • Nut Crack: 100% ACC and EVA Up.
  • Sky Walker: Pierce. Power 42 to 10.
  • Devil Blast: 75% Stop.
  • Banfrau: Pierce. Power 50 to 20.
  • True Dream: 90% Ether Def Down.
  • Holy Gate: Uses Ether.
  • Dear Friend: Pierce. Power 68 to 30.
  • Light Ether bullets are now his initial equip over Fire and Wind.
  • Holy Light: Power 10 to 8.
  • Goddess Eyes: Ether Up

Goddess Eyes now raises Ether as part of the theme of reworking defensive buffs. Billy was the basis for most balance changes, as he’s arguably the most well-rounded character. Outside of low survivability, Billy makes a case for being the best gear pilot and fighter on foot. But it’s not really for anything overtuned. His gear damage is just the best in the game with nothing else going for it, and his on foot builds are very flexible at the cost of sacrificing other strengths. Raising his DPS with the doubler but lowering his support use, making all of his Ether options phenomenal but crippling his defense, pure support love for weaker offense and defense etc. Outside of some important changes, we did out best to leave Billy alone. He’s good as is.

  • Wind/Earth/Fire/Water Shield: Level 55 to 40.
  • Goddess Wake: Level 60 to 45.

Renmazuo/El Renmazuo:

  • Double Snap: 80% Ether Machine Shutdown

  • Hard Gun: 85% Ether Machine Shutdown

  • Gun Blaze/Holy Fist: Uses the Ether stat

  • Blaze Shot/Sky Gatling: 100% Stop

  • Thousand: 100% Wither

  • Holy Climb: Uses the Ether stat

  • Holy Soul: 100% Armor loss

  • Eth Circuit is now his initial equipment over B Circuit.

  • Purity Light: Grants Def Up to a single target.

  • Holy Light: Grants Def Up to all targets.

  • Jessie Cannon: Fuel cost: 500 to 400 (El Renmazuo)

Fuel for El Renmazuo's attacks and deathblows have been reduced by 50%.

Rico:

  • Rico Rocket: Power 26 to 30.
  • Death Drive: Power 30 to 34.
  • Banderas: Pierce. Power 34 to 20.
  • Dragon Fist: 100% A++/D--. Uses Ether. Power 38 to 40.
  • Fire Bomb: 90% Weaken. Power 42 to 44.
  • Pile Crasher: 90% Wither. Power 46 to 48.
  • Spin Strike: 80% Confuse. Power 50 to 52.
  • Death Roll: Pierce. Power 54 to 40.
  • Steel Spirit Steel Charge: Haste, self-only. Learns at level 40 rather than 50.

Rico’s spirit moves have been changed to help him out more; Steel Spirit was effectively useless due to Rico’s garbage Ether Defense, and Steel Body was literally useless because it just... didn’t work. Steel Charge offsets his defining weaknesses of speed without breaking him as a character, and Steel Body now works as intended.

  • Steel Mettle: Level 60 to 55.

Stier/El Stier:

  • Drill War: 80% Dispel

  • Drill Drive: 85% Dispel

  • Grand Slam: 90% Power loss

  • Hammer G: 95% Power loss

  • Mega Body/Scrap: 100% Armor loss

  • Drive Kaiser: 100% Slow

  • Iron Kaiser: 100% Ether power halved

  • Starting frame for El Stier is now STIE-25000 over STIE-20000.

Fuel for El Stier's attacks and deathblows have been reduced by 50%.

Emeralda:

  • Leg Cutter: 100% Self A++/D--.
  • Wave Cutter: 90% Eth Def Down.
  • Leg Spin: 80% Def Down.
  • Hammerhead: 90% ACC Down.
  • Grand Arm: Earth elemental.
  • Divider: 100% EVA Up.
  • Flying Arm: 100% Eth effect up.
  • Reycount: Uses Ether.
  • Dark Beast: 30% death.

Crescens:

  • Arm Bash/Dance Bash: Use the Ether stat
  • Devil Hand: 90% Camera damage
  • Devil Bird: 95% Camera damage
  • Dead Spin/Dead Melody: 100% Resist down
  • Dark Wave: 100% Wither. No longer Dark elemental
  • Dark Force: 100% Armor loss. No longer Dark elemental

Chu-Chu:

  • Critical hit rate: 10% to 25%.

  • Forest Dance (foot): Heals all allies

  • Forest Dance (giant): Power: 50 to 70. Heals all allies.

  • Culen Prayer and Myrm Prayer have been combined into Easing Prayer.

  • Nature Rhumba: New spell. Inflicts slow. Targets a single opponent.

  • Maiden Kiss: 8 EP to 5 EP

Chu-Chu’s healing is the selling point of the character outside abusing Drives, but in reality its output is pitiful. Especially considering how you don’t want to drag out gear fights, and you’re sacrificing damage for survivability. Healing is now adjusted to better support your attackers and make her a real viable pick.

  • Forest Wind: Level 50 to 42.
  • Earth Gnome: Level 55 to 48.
  • Ancient Myth: Level 60 to 55.

Maria:

  • Graviton Gun: 30 EP to 15 EP

On foot; Maria is actually pretty good and fairly underrated, as novice players are often turned off by her low speed and no deathblows. Due to her insanely high damaging spells that run off Siebzehn:’s Ether stats including Power Magics, Maria can be a fairly strong on foot character with a good understanding of the game's mechanics.

But Graviton Gun is way too costly in spite of this. By end-game you’ll only be able to use it twice and with the doubler equipped without the Economether, you're only capable of using it once. Maria isn’t even available for many on foot sections, so this should encourage players to use her and experiment more with an ability they would normally never see.

Siebzehn:

  • Mega Fight: 80% Camera damage

  • Gravity Fist: 85% Camera damage

  • Dyna Rush/GravityPress: Use the Ether stat

  • Meteor Press/Iron Storm: 100% Slow

  • Maria Beat: 100% Weaken

  • Grav. Cannon: Power 40 to 80

  • All of Siebzehn's frames have had their HP increased by 5000.

Mechanical changes:

  • Defend now boosts AP.

Stat changes:

Characters:

Elly:

  • Hit 7 to 10
  • Ether 15 to 20
  • Agility 8 to 9
  • Ether growth 80 to 85
  • Ether Def growth 70 to 75

Elly is getting buffs for on-foot that should make her more inviting of an option. Though she is a mandatory party member fairly often, this is in Gear sections a majority of the time. So this will hopefully make her a bit more flexible overall.

Citan:

  • Attack 18 to 16
  • Attack growth 100 to 85 (fist)
  • Attack growth 100 to 95 (sword)

Citan is good. Really good. His high speed and strength grant him the highest DPS with little downtime on support thanks to Renki. There is usually never a reason NOT to have him in your party outside of Gear battles. He didn't need another weakness beside Heimdall, but something had to give. This change does little to hurt his overall usefulness while keeping his damage in check for majority of the game. His attack cap was tied with Rico in the base game, further denting any sort of merit for the big guy. It goes up to 95 once Citan gets his sword.

Bart:

  • Defense 10 to 14
  • Ether 7 to 14
  • Evade 14 to 16
  • Ether growth 45 to 48
  • EP growth 90 to 94

Bart is generally one of the weakest characters in the game due to mediocrity. For most of the game, anything he can do, others can do better. Wild Smile is his biggest selling point, yet its effects can be replicated with an Evasion Ring. The goal was to rework Bart to be much more supportive and improve his jack-of-all-trades nature to be more useful for him.

These stat changes should let Bart be far more useful overall, without simply amping his attack to compensate his middling toolkit. It also helps give him a sense of identity on the roster by using stats largely underutilized to give them more of an impact in the game.

Billy:

  • Ether growth 75 to 78
  • Ether Defense growth 65 to 70

Rico:

  • HP 110 to 200
  • Attack 28 to 60
  • Defense 23 to 38
  • Hit 10 to 18
  • Agility 7 to 8
  • Attack growth 100 to 120
  • Hit growth 30 to 34
  • Evasion growth 28 to 30
  • EP growth 70 to 75

Rico is infamous as one of the worst party members in the game. Despite being a physical tank with high damage, Citan outclasses him in both DPS and utility. His moves are all single targets with little utility. This could work if his stats made up for that. Most of them are worse than Fei’s when he joins, gravely underselling his boss fight. The simple solution is to give him high speed, but that ruins the diversity of the cast. Rico would remain a suboptimal pick since Citan still has more utility. We chose to double down on making him a juggernaut. His starting stats and growths are adjusted to reflect that. Also, we raised his agility a bit to match the boss fight and prevent the powerhouse conundrum, where a character has so much strength yet is too slow to make good use of it. This moves him away from those who lack deathblows. The same goes for Hit rate from the boss battle. Rico’s huge head-start is offset by his poor utility (no healing, cures, AOE, limited elemental coverage, etc.) alongside slower stat growth.

Emeralda:

Child:

  • Agility: 12 to 14
  • Ether growth 70 to 75
  • Ether Defense growth 62 to 65

Adult:

  • Attack growth 135 to 130
  • Defense growth 120 to 115
  • Hit growth 88 to 68
  • Evasion growth 92 to 72
  • Ether Defense growth 112 to 110

Emeralda is a rather rounded character with damage stats between Fei and Elly, and excels in accuracy and evasion. While not awful as a kid, she struggled to stand out against others with low damage and little utility. Not until she grows up at least and becomes overpowered. Giving her more turns helps offset that without directly buffing her, though her Ether caps were raised just a bit as the intended replacement for Elly. Her grown-up version gets nerfed slightly in return to stop her from becoming too powerful. Those caps were absurd, though they stay above the other party members.

Chu-Chu:

  • Ether 12 to 25
  • Ether growth 42 to 45
  • EP growth 88 to 90

Love her, hate her, she still deserves some attention. This helps the effectiveness of her spells, especially healing.

Margie:

  • Healing now has a base 30 power rather than 20.
  • Meteorstrike and Rat fever do 250 damage rather than 1.

Gears:

Gears have had their attack stats doubled to accommodate for the modified damage formula.

Weltall/Weltall-2/Xenogears:

  • Attack modifier: 10 to 21 (Weltall/Weltall-2)
  • Attack modifier: 12 to 25 (Xenogears)
  • Ether amp 10 to 15

Vierge:

  • Attack modifier: 7 to 14

Heimdall:

  • Attack modifier: 10 to 18

Brigandier:

  • Attack modifier: 8 to 15

Renmazuo:

  • Attack modifier: 8 to 14

Stier:

  • Attack modifier: 12 to 27
  • Agility 7 to 8

Stier was given a point of agility to help differentiate it from Siebzehn. They start off with very similar builds, but Stier gets outclassed once Power Magics came into play.

Chu-Chu:

  • Attack modifier: 8 to 16

Siebzehn:

  • Attack modifier: 12 to 24
  • Agility 8 to 6

Siebzehn more than makes up for Maria being pitifully weak on her own. The speed nerf helps balance it without getting too invasive on its damage. In return, Maria has one of her spells buffed.

Crescens:

  • Attack modifier: 10 to 19

El-Fenrir:

  • Attack modifier: 9 to 16

El-Andvari:

  • Attack modifier: 9 to 17

El-Renmazuo:

  • Attack modifier: 8 to 15
  • RENM-24800 24800 to 28000

El-Stier:

  • Attack modifier: 12 to 27
  • Agility 7 to 9

Yggdrasil IV:

  • Attack modifier: 10 to 19
  • Agility 8 to 10
