🪄 First Run and the Wizard

The first launch shows a welcome page with the PiCode mark and a short setup flow — all inside the editor, with no terminal step required to reach a working agent.

The five steps

Every step can be skipped, and each choice is an ordinary setting you can change later.

  1. Sign in. The PiCode Account, used for cloud sync. Skip it and everything keeps working locally.
  2. Choose the pi.
    • Built-in pi (recommended): installed by PiCode, with its profile inside PiCode's data/. Updated from the editor — nobody installs or configures anything by hand.
    • Your installed pi: connect to a pi that already lives on your machine, to use its data where it is. PiCode never writes to it.
  3. Provider & model. Pick a subscription (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Grok, Kimi, Meta, OpenRouter…) or declare a compatible endpoint with an API key, then choose the default model. The OAuth flows are Pi's own, shown as editor dialogs.
  4. Packages (optional). Browse what is installed and the gallery, and install what you want.
  5. Theme. A gallery with real previews: hover to try one on, click to keep it.

Importing an existing external profile is offered with counts — what would come in: packages, connections, skills and conversations. Credential import is unchecked by default and asks for its own confirmation.

What the welcome page removes

The stock VSCodium first-run noise — the Start page, recent announcements, the Copilot-era banners — is gone. If you skip the flow, run PiCode: Set up PiCode to bring it back.

After the wizard

  • The editor's Chat is the surface. Type @pi and ask.
  • Pi's settings live under the editor's settings tree, in the product's own nodes. There is no separate PiCode settings page, by design.
  • Everything the wizard wrote lives in data/. That folder is what cloud sync will upload as one unit.

Honest status note

The wizard ships and works through its rounds. The pieces that read state back from the core — skill and agent discovery, the status view — are still closing. See Roadmap and Known State.
