Updating and Uninstalling

Updating the desktop app

Run the same one-line installer again, or download the new installer from the latest release and run it over the old version. Your designs, recent files and version history are kept.

System Update
Windows irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anand34577/whittle/main/install.ps1 | iex
macOS, Linux curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anand34577/whittle/main/install.sh | sh

Whittle doesn't update itself automatically yet. To hear about new versions, click Watch ▸ Custom ▸ Releases on the GitHub page.

Uninstalling the desktop app

Your .whittle files are never removed.

System How
Windows Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Installed apps ▸ Whittle ▸ Uninstall
macOS drag Whittle from Applications to the Trash, or curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anand34577/whittle/main/install.sh | sh -s -- --uninstall
Linux curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anand34577/whittle/main/install.sh | sh -s -- --uninstall (or sudo apt remove whittle / sudo dnf remove whittle)

To also remove the version history and recent files, delete the app data folder listed on the Installation page.

Updating the server

See Backups and Upgrades. In short:

# Linux install: same command as installing; settings and data are kept
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anand34577/whittle/main/install.sh | sh -s -- --server
# Docker
docker pull ghcr.io/anand34577/whittle:latest && docker rm -f whittle && docker run -d --name whittle -p 8080:8080 -v whittle-data:/data --restart unless-stopped ghcr.io/anand34577/whittle:latest
# Docker Compose
docker compose pull && docker compose up -d

Uninstalling the server

# systemd
sudo systemctl disable --now whittle
sudo rm -f /etc/systemd/system/whittle.service && sudo systemctl daemon-reload
# OpenRC (Alpine)
sudo rc-service whittle stop; sudo rc-update del whittle; sudo rm -f /etc/init.d/whittle

sudo rm -rf /opt/whittle /etc/whittle
# Only if you no longer need the designs and accounts:
sudo rm -rf /var/lib/whittle && sudo userdel whittle

Docker: docker rm -f whittle, and docker volume rm whittle-data to delete the data too.
