Version History

Whittle keeps your work safe in three layers:

  1. Undo: unlimited, with named steps ("Undo Fillet 1"). Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z.
  2. Autosave: about a second after every change. If Whittle or your computer crashes, the start screen offers Continue where you left off.
  3. Version history: every time you save, the previous version is kept.

Opening the history

Export ▸ Version history in the toolbar, or press Ctrl+K and type "history".

Each entry shows when it was saved (and, on a server, by whom). For any version you can:

  • Restore: bring that version back as your current design. Nothing is lost: on the server the restore is saved as a new version, and on the desktop the version you replace goes into the history too.
  • Open as a copy: open it next to your work without changing anything.

Where versions are kept

Where you use Whittle Versions kept Stored in
Desktop app the last 50 per file your computer's app data folder (see Installation); the history follows the file path
Self-hosted server the last 50 per design (adjustable with WHITTLE_MAX_VERSIONS) on the server, see Backups and Upgrades
Web browser without a server the last 30 per design this browser's storage (clearing site data removes it)

Saving from two places at once (server)

If a design was saved from another tab or computer since you opened it, Whittle asks before overwriting it. You can overwrite (the other save stays in the history, so it can still be restored) or cancel and reopen the newer version.

.whittle files

A .whittle file is an ordinary ZIP containing document.json (the full design as readable JSON), a manifest and a thumbnail. Imported STEP/STL models are stored inside, so a file is self-contained and can be emailed or moved freely. Files made by newer versions of Whittle are refused with a clear message rather than misread.
