Fishing
Go Fish keeps the normal fishing interaction and extends the fishing hook, loot tables, and rod behavior. Cast a rod, wait for a bite, and retrieve the hook as usual. The location and conditions at the hook determine which custom entries can be selected.
The Overworld table keeps the vanilla junk, treasure, and fish categories and adds a crate category. Go Fish fish entries are added to the vanilla fish pool. Treasure and crate entries require the normal open-water condition; ordinary fish and junk do not.
The weights below are relative loot-table weights, not percentages. They are the weights of the Go Fish entries added to the fish pool.
| Condition | Catch | Relative weight |
|---|---|---|
| Icy biome | Icicle Fish | 10 |
| Icy biome | Snowball Fish | 10 |
| Swamp or Mangrove Swamp | Slimefish | 10 |

| Full moon at night | Lunarfish | 50 |
| Full moon at night | Galaxy Starfish | 25 |

In the Nether, the hook uses Go Fish's Nether fishing table instead of the vanilla table. Its top-level categories use these relative weights:
| Category | Relative weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nether junk | 10 | Nether plants, bones, wart, vines, gravel, and fungi. |
| Nether treasure | 5 | Requires open water according to the modified liquid check. |
| Nether crates | 5 | Requires open water. |
| Nether fish | 80 | Includes global and biome-specific Nether fish. |
Lava is treated as a valid liquid for Go Fish fishing. Only rods marked as lava-proof can safely fish in it; see Rods-and-Lures. Catches generated in the Nether are protected from fire and lava until they are picked up.
The entries inside the Nether fish pool use these relative weights. Biome-specific entries are only eligible in their listed biome:
| Catch | Relative weight | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Smokey Salmon | 30 | Any Nether biome |
| Magma Cod | 30 | Any Nether biome |
| Bonefish | 15 | Any Nether biome |
| Obsidian Halibut | 15 | Any Nether biome |
| Basalt Bass | 15 | Any Nether biome |
| Spikerfish | 15 | Any Nether biome |
| Gilded Blackstone Carp | 15 | Basalt Deltas |
| Blackstone Trout | 15 | Basalt Deltas |
| Soul Salmon | 15 | Soul Sand Valley |
The End uses a separate table:
| Category | Relative weight | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| End treasure | 5 | Requires open water according to the modified liquid check. |
| End crates | 5 | Produces an End Crate and requires open water. |
| End fish | 90 | Includes Endfish, Matrix Fish, Ender Eel, and other End catches. |
The entries inside the End fish pool use these relative weights:
| Catch | Relative weight |
|---|---|
| Endfish | 50 |
| Matrix Fish | 5 |
| Ender Eel | 5 |
| Chorus Cod | 25 |
| Dragonfish | 3 |
| Omega Floater | 5 |
| Portal Puffer | 10 |
The mod checks the biome at the fishing origin. The built-in biome groups are:
- Icy biomes: Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Snowy Taiga, Snowy Beach, Grove, Snowy Slopes, Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Frozen Ocean, Deep Frozen Ocean, and Frozen River.
- Plains biomes: Plains and Sunflower Plains.
- Swamp biomes: Swamp and Mangrove Swamp.
- Other groups: Vanilla biome tags such as oceans, badlands, forests, rivers, and the Nether tag are used where specified by a loot table.
- Full moon: The world must be at night and the moon phase must be phase 0.
- Rain: Rainy Bass can be selected while it is raining. Thunderstorms also count as rain.
- Thunder: Thundering Bass requires a thunderstorm.
- Snow: Blizzard Bass requires precipitation in a biome cold enough for snow instead of rain.
- Altitude: Cloudy Crab requires the fishing origin to be at Y 150 or above.
When a fishing hook is created, Go Fish reads fishing bonuses from the player's inventory. The item does not need to be held or worn. Each distinct bonus item type is counted once, even if the player carries multiple copies.
- Lure increases the hook's fishing speed. The effective lure value is capped at 5.
- Luck is added to the hook's Luck of the Sea value.
- Auto-smelting makes the hook replace a catch with its normal smelting result when one exists.
- Experience changes the base experience value of a catch.
Vanilla fishing rods also receive the inventory-based bonuses. Extended Go Fish rods additionally contribute their own properties.
If a non-lava-proof rod is used in lava, the hook is removed and the rod is damaged. A lava-proof rod can continue fishing and uses the Nether loot table when in the Nether.
A catch is auto-smelted when at least one of these conditions is true:
- The rod has the built-in auto-smelt property.
- The rod has the Deepfry enchantment.
- An active fishing bonus provides auto-smelting.
The implementation looks for a normal smelting recipe for the caught item. If no smelting recipe exists, the original item remains unchanged.
Fishing starts with a base experience value of 1. The hook then adds a random vanilla-style amount from 0 to 5. The Rod of Souls adds 5 to the base value.
Operators can use /fish to generate fishing loot without casting a hook. See Commands-and-Advancements for syntax
and permission details.
