Topic & Notification

In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), a Topic is a communication channel where messages are published, and Notifications are the delivery mechanism that sends those messages to subscribers via endpoints like email, SMS, or HTTPS. Together, they form the backbone of OCI’s messaging and alert system.

1. Topic in OCI

  • A Topic is essentially a container or channel for messages.
  • You create a topic to group related notifications (e.g., “Billing Alerts” or “System Health”).

Characteristics:

Unique name across the tenancy.

Optional description and tags for organization.

Messages published to a topic are automatically sent to all its subscriptions.

  • Use case: If you want to notify multiple teams about system downtime, you publish one message to the topic, and all subscribers (email, SMS, etc.) receive it.

2. Notification in OCI

The Notifications service is the system that delivers messages from topics to subscribers.

Supported endpoints:

  • Email
  • SMS
  • Custom HTTPS endpoints
  • OCI Functions (for automation)

Notifications can be triggered by:

Alarms (e.g., CPU usage exceeds threshold)

Event rules (e.g., new object uploaded to bucket)

Manual publishing (directly sending a message to a topic)

  • Benefit: Ensures timely communication and automation when cloud events occur

Steps to Create Topic & Notification

Step 3 Now we create subscriptions in the selected topic "Monitoring_team_Notification".

In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), “topic subscriptions” mean registering endpoints (like email, SMS, webhooks, or functions) to receive messages published to a notification topic.

Endpoints Supported:

  • Email (common for alerts and monitoring)
  • SMS (for mobile notifications)
  • HTTPS webhooks (to integrate with external systems)
  • PagerDuty, Slack, Microsoft Teams (for incident management and collaboration)
  • OCI Functions (to trigger serverless workflows)

We select email address for subscription. When we create subscription on email address that time a confirmation mail received in email address for subscription regarding and subscriber need to confirm the subscription.
