OpenRC Simulator v0.1.7
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.7
Stable software release of the early-alpha simulator. Aircraft and ground-vehicle models remain experimental and need independent measurements and pilot evaluation.
Changes since v0.1.6
- Trims fixed-wing runway and airborne launches for level flight at 50% throttle, while retaining the selected launch on restart. The trim and takeoff behavior remain subject to flight testing.
- Expands Club field scenery, vegetation, mountain backdrops, dusk and night lighting, and RC truck course detail. Green paradise remains the separate, flat practice landscape.
- Clarifies Home, Pause and Help controls, Spanish field labels and error messages, and adds radio-model options to the HUD preferences.
- Refines Turbo Lumber's visual model and gear presentation. Adds more aircraft, landing-gear and vehicle sound material, and optional white show smoke for the stock Ventage Jet.
- Adds an O.S. MAX-61FX muffler installation and sourced propeller work; extends the Extra 300S experimental wing and ground-effect research. These changes do not establish physical accuracy.
- Extends source-bound AI companion and sortie research, flight-quality diagnostics, and checked Godot test evidence. AI companions remain an experimental, narrowly qualified activity and are off by default.
- Refreshes generated woodland-edge source and clearance evidence after scenery changes, makes the control-presentation teardown safe for the headless renderer, keeps the aircraft contract check independent of fleet ordering, and separates headless audio smoke checks from native-driver timing checks.
- Updates scenery checks for the current parked fleet, lake-context plants, pavilion roof and downloaded grass; each geometry component retains an explicit measured budget.
- Makes the scenery build check report the open 800 ms cold-start target and gate two warm builds, targets a mature trunk below its crown in the crash test, and verifies Workshop smoke stays within its shared particle budget.
- Restores usable Settings scrolling at 200% text in 960×540 and 1024×576 windows, checked in the English/Spanish responsive matrix.
- Translates the dynamic flight-companion summary and detail on Home, plus the corresponding Pause menu text and eligibility note.
- Checks Pause silence against the active soundscape and glow player instead of the empty legacy compatibility voice, and drains flight audio when the Change aircraft and Home span UI checks close.
- Restores reviewed Workshop profile copying from a v2 source to an untouched stock v1 target; edited v1 profiles still require explicit migration.
- Verifies the Turbo Lumber night kit against its authored wingtip lenses, which sit just inside the modeled span, while retaining the bounds check for aircraft without lens anchors.
- Isolates the visual runway-priority comparison in matched synthetic fields, so changing club scenery cannot create a false overlap failure.
- Keeps the club runway's subtle stripe cap while restoring the shader uniform used by the stripe-filter ablation check.
- Updates the guarded grass capture to recognize the current Poly Haven flower batch while still requiring every accepted flower source to appear.
- Gives near-field blades the same club turf colour transform as the ground, preserving the measured fade into the runway apron and taxi markings.
- Bounds the tree-wind image mask for clipped crowns entering a frame edge and isolated raster pixels, while retaining rejection of unrelated background changes.

Verify downloads against SHA256SUMS, extract and follow the first-launch guide. Godot is not required. The ZIPs have no installer or archive signature; the macOS app is ad-hoc signed but not notarized.
Verification and limits
The tagged release workflow publishes these archives only after the complete app matrix, visual captures, native evaluator builds, frozen prototype checks, and three-platform export/package checks pass. The tag must match app/project.godot and a clean source commit. Generated aircraft geometry and physical data retain their own source checks; the woodland-edge placement proof is refreshed from its generator.
Automated checks verify software behavior, not physical aircraft accuracy, pilot handling, radio compatibility, target-machine performance or native macOS gameplay. The Stik sideslip screen and R02 yaw-damping comparison remain open, alongside the roadmap gates. See the tools and release procedure for reproducible checks.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.6
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.6
Stable software release of the early-alpha simulator. Aircraft models and experimental activities still require independent physical and pilot validation.
The v0.1.4 and v0.1.5 tags were not published. Release checks identified incorrectly aggregated expected CLI failures and insufficient time allowance for long tests on shared CI runners. This release preserves those tags, validates expected rejections separately and gives measured long tests bounded execution time without changing their assertions or physical tolerances.
Changes since v0.1.3
- Adds finite liquid fuel to supported fixed-wing installations, with launch fill, depletion and changing mass properties. Turbo Lumber uses a finite battery by default and retains an ideal-supply comparison; battery telemetry now shows pack state and warnings. The base Stik keeps its prescribed-fuel reference. Fuel and installation data remain estimates. Fuel contract.
- Adds level-trimmed 50% airborne starts for fixed-wing aircraft, preserves the selected start on restart and refits runway trim for the selected atmosphere.
- Fixes simulation faults in P-51 power-off flight when the propeller is at rest or near the engine's RPM cutoff, including fuel-exhaustion transitions. Regression and recorded-flight evidence.
- Aligns Natural Random briefing identity with the aircraft supply used by the launch route.
- Updates experimental glow-engine throttle response and the Stik's lateral-directional model.
- Adds a normal/full dual-rate switch for keyboard and gamepad flight controls; radios retain their own rates.
- Adds selectable, remembered Club and Green landscapes, with vegetation and scenery updates.
- Improves twilight, moon phases and eclipses, and automatic aircraft lighting with manual override.
- Improves Workshop editing, preview and recovery; Home layout at 1280×720 in English and Spanish; flight audio and smoke handling.
- Extends visual checkpoint handling to finite-fuel flights and preserves historical aircraft-data compatibility.

Verification and limits
Publication requires the complete application test matrix, rendered visual captures, both native evaluator builds, prototype checks and Windows, Linux and macOS export/package checks. The release tag must match the application version and a clean source commit. The tagged workflow publishes the downloads only after every required job passes.
Focused regression evidence is recorded in the Natural Random report, power-climb and trim report, sun visual report and landscape/export report.
Automated tests and captures verify software behavior; they do not establish physical accuracy, pilot handling, radio compatibility, target-machine performance or native macOS gameplay acceptance. The Stik sideslip screen and R02 yaw-damping comparison remain open, alongside the other gates in the roadmap.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.3
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.3
Stable software release of the early-alpha simulator. Aircraft models and experimental activities still require independent physical and pilot validation.
Changes since v0.1.2
- Fixes pause/restart routing so resuming a flight preserves the accepted controls and a runway restart begins at idle. Adds explicit runway-start regression coverage across the fixed-wing fleet.
- Improves P-51 propeller slipstream integration and adds an explicit sidewash model. The strict ground, handling and envelope checks are enabled again. The aircraft remains experimental; powered trim and target-machine performance remain open. P51-26 evidence.
- Updates the Extra 300 runway gear setup with retained baseline and candidate replay evidence. Extra evidence.
- Adds aircraft sound propagation delay and distance-dependent high-frequency absorption. Acoustic and listening qualification remain open.
- Routes thunder through its flight's environment mix and limiter, including scene suspension, reattachment and disposal.
- Repairs the P-51 Workshop descriptor after its aircraft data changed and regenerates the aircraft parameter reference.
- Improves crash-cost identity handling, contact-to-part inspection mapping, provisional replacement ceilings and cached catalog loading. Missing prices and incomplete dossiers remain explicit. CR-39 evidence.
- Hardens release packaging: the triggering tag must identify the clean source commit and match the numeric application version; import errors stop export even if Godot returns zero. Adds disposable exporter regression checks.
- Gives the complete P-51 envelope test a measured-workload timeout of 180 seconds; all flight assertions remain mandatory.
- Makes UI test teardown wait for a real audio-mixer interval, using monotonic time instead of simulation frame delta. Engine-error and resource-leak checks remain enabled.
- Corrects the Extra ground-test fixture to use the production runway equilibrium. Breakaway cases retain strict absolute cross-rate bounds and response checks; a separate, verified sliding-only pair tests the unchanged refinement-order requirement. Tick-located stick/slip transitions are no longer assigned an unsupported monotonic error-ratio requirement. This is a test-requirement correction, not a physics change or physical validation.
- Repairs disposable fault-injection checks for current aircraft-v2 identities and resource import, requiring each mutation to reach its intended validation or contact failure.
- Adds a reproducible developer flight-test battery and refreshes the source documentation and aircraft imagery.

Verification and limits
The release workflow passed on tagged commit cc114fa9: all eight application partitions, integration, visual captures, both native builds, prototype checks and all three exports. The downloaded Windows package completed a 720-tick trimmed flight, loaded its exact packaged native evaluator with a float64 ABI, reported the clean tagged build identity, and rendered a diagnostic capture on Windows. All three published archive hashes match the tested artifacts. The visual runner retained completed-import SIGABRT logs and successful qualified retry logs for its import probes. Focused Windows checks cover soundscape, thunder lifecycle, Settings, Workshop and the strict P-51 envelope. Exporter regressions cover tag selection, clean-source identity, version mismatch and import failure.
The known Stik rudder-recovery and R02 yaw-damping comparisons remain reported as pending, separately from software failures. P-51 flight assertions pass but do not establish physical accuracy. Helicopter, ground vehicles, glow installations, weather, audio and aircraft handling retain their documented experimental limits. Automated checks do not establish radio compatibility, target-GPU performance or native macOS gameplay acceptance.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.2
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.2 — release notes
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.2 is a stable software release of an early-alpha simulator. Aircraft and experimental features remain under evaluation; this release does not claim independent physical flight validation.
The experimental-aircraft limits below are disclosed model limitations. They do not block this software release and are not represented as passes.
Experimental-aircraft limits — 2026-10-16
- Ugly Stik rudder recovery: the retained baseline reaches a body yaw-rate magnitude of 15.125273°/s at 240 Hz and 15.200616°/s at 480 Hz against the 15°/s internal screen. The 12-second extension is diagnostic, not acceptance evidence. Independent aircraft evaluation remains open. See the rudder-authority diagnostic and retained exact-replay evidence.
- Yaw damping (R02): the α=11° comparison is 7.75% against the 7% screening threshold. This model comparison is not a physical measurement; evaluation remains open. See the R02 damping diagnostic.
- Experimental P-51D (P51-22): powered takeoff and inside-loop acceptance remain pending. The aircraft selector identifies the model as experimental and shows this status. See the P51-22 report.
These items are not stable-release gates. They remain visible limitations for anyone evaluating the affected aircraft; a software release does not qualify their flight behavior.
Changes
- Adds Settings for windowed or borderless fullscreen, interface scale, opaque panels, reduced motion, language and menu volume. A window-mode change reverts after 15 seconds unless kept; other presentation changes have explicit Keep/Revert controls.
- Rebuilds Home as a compact, scrollable flight-setup rail with separate Flight, Aircraft, Practice, Workshop and Garage pages while keeping the primary flight actions available. Adds menu focus and action sounds with an adjustable level. Menu evidence.
- Adds profile-based gamepad actions for menu navigation and flight controls, with optional actions for supported aircraft equipment.
- Adds simulated retractable landing gear and flaps for the P-51D and Ventage Jet. P-51 flap settings are 15° for takeoff and up to 45°; Ventage Jet settings are 20° for takeoff and up to 50°. Gear mechanics, actuator times and aerodynamic behavior still include estimates and have not been flight-identified.
- Adds a post-crash incident report with component damage, repair and replacement estimates, and catalog assumptions. Pending inspection or unknown condition keeps eligible salvage and total-loss values unknown instead of displaying zero; historical reports are not rewritten. Reports can be incomplete; prices, labor and repair outcomes are estimates, not market quotes or repair instructions. Salvage-estimate correction.
- Extends the shared simulation kernel with a common environment interface, stiff-contact substeps and generalized-coordinate solves. A research-grade multirotor plant also uses the shared kernel; a flyable drone or race activity is not included.
- Developer tooling (source checkout only): Adds optional radio, gamepad or joystick input through existing controller profiles to the detached articulated HX-700 mechanics inspector (
research/helicopter/inspect-mechanics.ps1). Focus loss or device disconnect pauses the preview. The script and articulated assets are excluded from all desktop ZIPs. This does not change the existing flyable helicopter trainer or its flight model; physical control and flight qualification remain open. Inspector evidence. - Adds the experimental MONSTER CAR 2 nitro vehicle alongside Bisonte MT8, with its supplied articulated model, engine speed and fuel state. The source selects the native ground evaluator on Windows/Linux and the GDScript reference implementation on macOS. Physical handling and target-machine performance remain unqualified.
- Refreshes field visuals with runway and mown surfaces integrated into the ground pass for supported layouts, reusable generated lake geometry, and updated aircraft-light and shadow framing. Cloud shadows and haze remain in the ground pass; L9c motion acceptance and target-hardware performance remain open. Surface evidence; landscape evidence.
- Adds detailed tubular-frame folding chairs at the pits, retaining their seeded placement and fabric colours; this is a visual estimate with no new downloaded asset. Chair verification.
- Reduces parked-car geometry and bench tessellation to keep the detailed field within its unchanged geometry limits. Landscape verification covers the original downloaded models, regenerated outputs and paired appearance captures.

Verification and limits
The release workflow passed on tagged commit 40275349. All three published archives match the tested SHA-256 values. The downloaded Windows package completed a 720-tick, three-second trimmed-flight check with finite samples; a Windows host probe also verified its packaged native library and build identity. The visual job passed on retry after an importer crash in a temporary test project; the package bytes were not rebuilt.
The release workflow gates publication on automated application, capture, native and platform-package checks. These checks verify software and archives; they do not establish physical flight accuracy, radio compatibility, pilot acceptance or target-machine performance. Aircraft configurations remain experimental, and flap and gear behavior, Stik rudder recovery, R02 yaw damping and P51-22 acceptance need further evaluation.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.1
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.1
A patch update to the v0.1.0 desktop release. OpenRC Simulator remains an early-development project; these changes do not establish flight or vehicle validation.
Changes since v0.1.0
- Adds an experimental O.S. MAX-61FX two-stroke Stik configuration. Its torque and propeller inputs include inferred or borrowed data.
- Configured glow installations now model carburetor feed pressure from tank geometry, fuel level, apparent acceleration, throttle and RPM; this affects mixture and engine output. Transport assumptions are inferred and need physical validation.
- Integrates the experimental helicopter research model as a hover trainer, using an X-Cell .60 SE flight reference and an HX-700 visual surrogate.
- Adds an experimental Bisonte MT8 RC truck activity with separate vehicle physics and replay. Its physical accuracy and target-machine performance remain unqualified.
- Adds optional fixed-wing emergency practice and improves failure/control handling.
- Adds moving-cloud and electrical-storm presentation, including lightning and rain effects. These are visual effects; storms do not add spatial weather forces.

Verification and limits
Tagged CI gates publication on the app checks and Windows, Linux and macOS exports, including a Linux trimmed-flight smoke test and resource-pack probes. These software checks do not establish physical flight validation, radio compatibility, pilot acceptance or target-machine performance. Experimental labels and open measurement gates remain in force.
- Review fixes stabilize glow startup, restore trace/export checks and helicopter night options, retain cached rotor profiles in packages, and improve Windows checkout compatibility. Timber import precision, the Stik palette, and grass checks retain v0.1.0 guarantees.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0
The first official desktop release of OpenRC Simulator, an open-source RC flight simulator built in Godot. This is an early development release: aircraft models and target-machine performance remain under evaluation.
Included
- RC airplane flight with keyboard, gamepad and USB radio input, calibration and throttle arming.
- Jensen Das Ugly Stik 60, two experimental glow-engine installations, Extra 300S, P-51D, Ventage Jet and electric Turbo Lumber Evolution. Each aircraft keeps its in-app qualification label.
- A research helicopter trainer with separate rotorcraft physics and an HX-700 visual surrogate; it is experimental and not flight-validated.
- Runway and airborne starts, weather and time-of-day controls, flight overlays and a Workshop for supported airplane adjustments.
- An expanded flying field with vegetation, lake presentation, wildlife, positional engine audio and night lighting.
- Ground contacts, propeller strikes, scenery collisions and persistent crash presentation with aircraft-specific wreck parts, effects and audio.
- Versioned aircraft data, flight traces and build identity for reproducible investigations.

Check the attached SHA256SUMS, extract the ZIP and follow the first-launch guide. Keep the throttle low while arming a radio. R restarts the flight. Existing preferences and radio calibration remain in the user data folder.
Verification and limits
Publication requires the tagged aircraft contract, generated-data, offline-tool, headless app and rendered-capture checks. Export checks exercise the Linux binary, inspect all three resource packs and verify platform build identity, macOS universal architecture and ad-hoc signing.
These software checks do not establish physical flight validation. Aircraft and propulsion parameters include estimates; experimental models retain their labels. Native Windows/macOS launch, physical radio compatibility, target-GPU performance and pilot acceptance remain separate qualifications. Downloads are unsigned ZIP packages, without an installer or trusted developer signing.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc8
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc8
An experimental integration release with a richer field, persistent crash presentation, stricter aircraft contracts and a new visual-only aircraft preview. The four existing flight models remain under evaluation.
Changes since rc7
- First flight: new Home preferences select the Stik runway, gentle wind/gusts/turbulence and passing evening. Saved choices take precedence. Choose Airborne, Calm and Day for the earlier practice setup. Direct command-line flights retain airborne, calm/reference and fixed-daylight defaults.
- Aircraft preview: Turbo Lumber Evolution joins the menu with its articulated model and Spanish name, Turbo Tronco Evolución. It is a PREVIEW: Fly is refused because electric propulsion and flight data are not integrated. Ugly Stik, Extra 300S, P-51D and Avanti S remain the four flight choices.
- Field and sound: expanded landscape materials, scenery/population integration, wildlife and positional soundscape. Scenery is enabled by default;
-- --scenery=offopts out. - Ground and crashes: per-wheel spin/contact, terrain profiles and approximate static scenery collision proxies. Ordinary flights enable crash effects and keep the aftermath until R or Pause → Restart;
--crash-effects=offrestores timed recovery. Wreck deformation, particles and crash audio are presentation effects, not flyable structural damage. - Aircraft data and diagnostics: the current fleet uses the strict
openrc-aircraft v2contract with attributed quantities, explicit capabilities and conditional modules. Expanded P-51/Avanti inventory, geometry and maneuver checks, and electric event/localization regressions retain their evidence and scope. - Home: improved keyboard focus/navigation and an update notice for exported builds. The notice checks GitHub at most once a day; downloads and replacement remain manual. Settings and radio calibration remain in the user data folder.

Verify the attached SHA256SUMS and follow the first-launch guide. Extract the ZIP before launching. New preferences start on the Stik runway; throttle must be low to arm a connected radio. Restart with R. Existing preferences can produce a different launch/weather setup.
Verification and limits
Publication is gated by tagged CI: aircraft schema/loader agreement, generated-data checks, offline-tool regressions, the full headless app suite and rendered captures. Export checks execute the Linux binary, inspect all three resource packs and build identity, and verify macOS universal architecture/ad-hoc signing and platform version fields. The three ZIPs carry SHA-256 checksums.
These are software checks. Native Windows/macOS GUI launch, physical radios, target-GPU performance, night readability and pilot/physical-model acceptance remain separate. Packages are unsigned test builds. Ground behavior, collision geometry, aircraft parameters and scenery include engineering estimates; electric development fixtures are synthetic. No flyable Turbo Lumber model, calibrated endurance, persistent flyable damage, installer or trusted developer signing is claimed.
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc7
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc7
An experimental integration release with runway starts, configurable weather, day/night flying and expanded propulsion and flight verification. The aircraft menu still offers Ugly Stik 60, Extra 300S, P-51D and Avanti S. Pilot and physical-model acceptance remain open.
Changes since rc6
- Runway start: the Stik's Home start selector offers an experimental idle start near the runway threshold. The saved choice also applies to restart and crash recovery. Other catalog aircraft retain airborne starts.
- Weather: Home's English/Spanish editor adds uniform wind, repeating gusts and seeded temporal turbulence, with presets, precise numeric inputs and sliders. Airspeed and horizontal ground speed are reported separately.
- Atmosphere: optional field elevation, temperature, QNH and humidity drive shared moist-air density in trim, aerodynamics and propulsion. The default reference density remains 1.225 kg/m³. The coupled naturally aspirated shaft model gains an estimated dry-air charge correction.
- Day and night: Home offers saved time presets, moonlit/dark nights and an "Evening, time passing" choice. The world includes solar/lunar lighting, stars, view-dependent exposure, field lamps and an experimental aircraft night-light kit. The evening choice advances the visual sky at 20× on simulation time; the default Day setting retains the fixed sun. The pause menu also supports time-of-day editing.
- Propulsion experiments: expanded coupled-shaft verification and synthetic 4S/6S electric development routes, including battery depletion, stop events and recorded model identity. A bounded electric-kernel optimization preserves the documented oracle results. These fixtures are not catalog aircraft or validated Timber models.
- Flight diagnostics: optional provenance-checked wing-polar tables, an explicitly labeled experimental Stik launch route, pull-up invariants and reproducible roll-departure investigations. Default aircraft do not enable the candidate polars; this release does not claim a validated repair for the reported high-speed Stik departure.

Verification and limits
Publication is gated by the tagged CI workflow: aircraft schema/loader agreement, generated-data checks, offline-tool regressions, the full headless app suite and rendered captures. Export checks fly the Linux binary, verify all three resource packs and their build identity, and inspect macOS universal architecture/ad-hoc signing and platform version fields. Release downloads include checksums for all three ZIPs.
These are software checks. Native Windows/macOS launch, physical radios, target-GPU performance, night readability and pilot acceptance remain separate. Night lighting, weather presets, shaft environmental response, electric data and candidate polars include documented estimates or synthetic fixtures. The electric 500 µs tick target remains open, with a separate exhaustion-event timing spike. No validated Turbo Timber flight model, persistent structural damage, full engine-operation simulation, calibrated endurance, installers or paid signing is claimed.

OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc6
OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc6
An experimental integration release covering the work since rc5: stronger flight/data checks, automated landing/circuit evidence, a richer field, crash diagnostics and tools for real-aircraft and radio measurements. Four aircraft fly: Ugly Stik 60, Extra 300S, P-51D and Avanti S. Extra, Mustang and Avanti remain experimental; pilot acceptance of the Stik is still open.
Changes
- Flight verification: stronger trim, envelope, calibration, checkpoint and input-data checks; saved Stik approach/circuit/replay/sensitivity evidence. Automated landings use the real session, servos and ground contacts. Home still starts in the air.
- Crash diagnostics: typed impact snapshots, hull crossing reconstruction and a rendered crossing pose. Persistent structural damage and wreck effects remain future work.
- Field: distant forest/hills, cloud shadows, near grass, integrated ground surfaces, calm windsock, pilot station and flightline cues. Club scenery remains opt-in (
-- --scenery=on). Trees and field props remain visual scenery. - Measurement tools: standalone
-- --input-report=report.json --t=20, filmed-latency marker (-- --latency-patch) and offline reducers for weight/CG, inertia, static propulsion, RPM steps and ground/roll video. Synthetic examples verify tools; they are not real-flight measurements. - Organization: code-grounded roadmap, one ownership registry without duplicated step status, a practical tooling index, corrected Home/Help/player guides, offline tool regressions in CI and required tag-specific release notes.

The release workflow gates packaging on app, offline-tool, schema/generator and rendered-capture checks. Export checks run the Linux binary, inspect all three resource packs, verify build identity and inspect the universal/ad-hoc-signed macOS bundle. Native Windows/macOS sessions, physical radios, target GPUs and pilot/readability acceptance remain separate and open.
Production physics remains GDScript. The optional native wake experiments are not shipped dependencies; the enabled-wake performance budget and calibration remain open. Stik propeller inputs still include borrowed data and the production Stik wash is disabled. Automated circuit evidence is calm and wash-off; it does not close PT2 or validate handling. Physical wind, fuel burn, full engine operation, recorded engine audio, player-selectable runway scenarios and installers remain future work.

OpenRC Simulator v0.1.0-rc5
OpenRC Simulator: first launch
An alpha RC airplane simulator. Start with the Jensen Das Ugly Stik 60 and tell us how it feels compared with a real Stik. Extra 300S and P-51D are experimental flight models; Avanti S is a visual preview with Fly disabled. See the aircraft table for their status.
1. Download and check
From Releases, download the ZIP for your computer. Choose the newest prerelease. SHA256SUMS lists each file's checksum. To check yours:
- Linux:
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing - macOS:
shasum -a 256 openrc-simulator-*.zip, then compare with the matching entry inSHA256SUMS. - Windows (PowerShell):
Get-FileHash .\openrc-simulator-*.zip
2. First launch
The builds are not signed with a paid developer certificate, so each system warns the first time.
macOS 15 Sequoia and later. Right-click → Open no longer works.
- Unzip and move OpenRC Simulator.app to Applications.
- Double-click it. When macOS says it cannot be opened, click Done.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security and scroll down. Click Open Anyway (it shows for about an hour after the blocked launch), enter your password and confirm.
After that it opens normally.
If macOS says the app "is damaged", run this once in Terminal:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/OpenRC Simulator.app"Windows. Unzip and run OpenRC Simulator.exe. If SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info → Run anyway. When Smart App Control is on, Windows blocks unsigned apps with no way to allow one app; you would need to turn Smart App Control off.
Linux (x86_64). Unzip, then run:
chmod +x openrc-simulator.x86_64
./openrc-simulator.x86_64You need OpenGL 3.3 graphics.
3. Fly
Home lets you choose the aircraft and switch between English and Spanish. Press Fly to start in the air, trimmed for level flight (15 m/s for the Stik). Navigate menus with the keyboard or mouse; the radio controls only flight. Esc opens the pause menu with Continue, Restart flight, End flight and Quit. Losing window focus also pauses.
| Control | Keyboard | Radio / gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Aileron, elevator | arrow keys | right stick (Mode 2) |
| Rudder | A / D | left stick, left–right |
| Throttle | W / S | left stick, up–down |
| Restart | R | |
| Pause menu | Esc | |
| Resume after a radio failsafe | P | |
| Camera: pilot / close-up | C | |
| Auto-zoom on / off | Z | |
| Ground shadow: sun / vertical / off | V | |
| Performance line on / off | F3 | |
| Record a flight trace | T | |
| Calibrate the radio | K, then Enter at each step (Esc cancels) |
A USB radio (EdgeTX/OpenTX) flies instead of the keyboard while it is connected.
- Recommended radio setup: USB Joystick in Advanced mode, Interface = Joystick, at most 8 axes, RF modules off. On Linux, Classic mode makes the radio look like a gamepad.
- Safety: the engine stays at idle until you move the throttle stick to low. Unplugging the radio pauses the simulator with the engine at idle.
- If the sticks are mapped wrong: press K and follow the on-screen steps. The calibration is saved for that radio.
A crash freezes the scene for 1.5 s, showing the impact speed, then the flight restarts.
4. What this build is (v0.1 alpha)
It has:
- full six-axis flight with prop torque and gyroscopic effects;
- stall at about 9 m/s and spins (recover with opposite rudder and the stick forward);
- servos, engine sound, a ground shadow and auto-zoom;
- Home, Help and pause menus in English and Spanish;
- a shared test field with sky, haze, clouds and three tree variants. Trees are visual only and have no collisions.
It does not have yet:
- takeoff or landing (it starts in the air);
- wind;
- real engine response or engine sound recordings.
5. Measure frame times (for the landscape work)
Builds from v0.1.0-rc2 on can write a frame-time report. Open a terminal in the folder with the app and run one of these:
- Windows:
"OpenRC Simulator.exe" -- --frametimes=frametimes.json --t=20 - Linux:
./openrc-simulator.x86_64 -- --frametimes=frametimes.json --t=20 - macOS:
"OpenRC Simulator.app/Contents/MacOS/OpenRC Simulator" -- --frametimes=frametimes.json --t=20
It flies for 21 seconds, writes frametimes.json and closes. Please send that file.
To measure beyond your screen's refresh rate, add --disable-vsync before the --.
6. Tell us
- Fly three circuits, a loop, a roll, a stall and a spin recovery.
- For roll, pitch, yaw and throttle, rate each one from −2 (sluggish) to +2 (twitchy) compared with a real Stik.
- Note whether you can tell which way the airplane is facing at 100 m, with and without auto-zoom (Z).
- Note how long the radio took to set up.
- Note the numbers on the performance line (F3).
