FAQ
Do my friends need SignLink to see my pictures? No. A SignLink picture is ordinary sign text saved in the world, so every player sees it, with or without the mod. Only the player who makes or edits pictures needs it. Animated pieces move for SignLink players; everyone else sees their first frame.
Does the server need anything? No. SignLink is client-side only: no server plugin, no config sync. A dedicated server does not need it.
What happens if I uninstall it? The pictures stay as normal signs. Your images folder, thumbnails and settings can be deleted by hand if you like (see Getting started).
Why does my picture look coarser on a server than in single player? On a server every player who walks up downloads the signs around them first, so SignLink keeps a shared world playable: at most 300 KB on one sign and 600 KB for all SignLink signs within 100 m. A big picture then gets fewer, bigger pixels. The Multiplayer max button picks the most detail that fits. See Multiplayer for side-by-side comparisons.
Where do my own pictures go?
Into the SignLink/images folder next to your worlds (on Windows
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\SignLink\images): PNG, JPG or GIF. The Open folder button in the
window takes you there. Folders inside it work too (→ opens one, ← goes back up). Six public-domain paintings and a
galloping horse GIF are in it to start with.
My GIF moves for me but not for my friend. Why? A GIF's frames are not saved in the world: it moves on every computer that has the GIF file in its images folder (in the same folder of it as yours). Give your friends the file; everyone else sees its first frame. The built-in animated art pieces are different: their frames are saved on the sign and move for every SignLink player.
A friend without the mod pressed E on my picture and it broke. The game's own sign editor cuts long text to 50 characters when Enter is pressed (Escape leaves it alone). Protect the sign with a ward, or hide the sign in a wall or the ground with only its picture out (3 Place slides the picture along the sign). With SignLink, E opens SignLink instead.
My GIF does not go on, or does not move. All moving GIFs share the GIF memory (256 MB by default; 512 or 1024 MB in Settings › Playback if your PC has the RAM). A very long GIF plays every second or third frame at the same speed, and one too big to move at all goes up as a still picture. The Moving row on 2 Content tells you which before you put it up. A shorter or smaller GIF moves.
Big pictures make the game hitch for a moment when I walk up. Is that SignLink? No, it is the game building the text of a large sign, and it happens the same way without the mod. The download itself does not stop the game. Smaller pictures and fewer of them in one place help.
Can I put a picture on the floor or the ceiling? Yes: on 3 Place lay the sign face up for a floor or face down for a ceiling, and tilt or turn it as you like. A sign is still a building piece and needs support, so a ceiling picture's sign has to touch the beam or floor it hangs from.
Does it work with a controller? No, keyboard and mouse only.
Does SignLink open a port or talk to the internet? No. It never connects anywhere: everything goes through the game's own sign texts.
Which languages does SignLink support? Game default (follows your game's language, English where SignLink has no translation for it), English, Magyar (Hungarian), 简体中文 (Simplified Chinese) and Русский (Russian). Choose one in Settings › Window › Language. The look is there too: Classic (dark wood and gold, the default) or Nordic (slate and amber).
Where is the Area bar in single player? Single player has no size limits, so it has no Area bar either: the window's title says how much SignLink holds within 100 m. On a server the bar shows how full the 600 KB of the area around you is.
My glowing picture looks blurry or soft. Why? That is the game's Bloom effect, which makes bright colours glow around their edges. Turn Bloom off in the game's graphics settings and glowing pictures look much sharper.
Can I look around while the window is open? Yes: hold the right mouse button off the window and move the mouse; let go, and the cursor is back where it was. You can walk, run and jump with the window open too.
Can I use the art pieces in my own mod or pack? Yes. The code is MIT and the art library is CC BY 4.0: credit "SignLink by ChesTeRcs" when you share the pieces themselves. Playing with them, screenshots and videos need no credit. See Credits and licence.
Where do I report a bug or suggest an idea? On GitHub Issues: the bug report form asks for the versions and the log, which makes it much faster to find. You can also comment on Nexus Mods.
