@dagilleland dagilleland released this 12 Oct 22:48

Beta build for public distribution.

  • Download is available as soon as an assignment has student repositories, including continuing assignments, instead of only after the due date. While there is still something to provision or release, Download appears beside the Provision or Release button

Starter kit updates as pull requests

Changes to a starter kit can now be released to student repos as diff-based pull requests, from a new Release Pull Request wizard on Edit Assignment. It works one section at a time (or "All sections" explicitly), retries network failures, lists failures first with a one-click retry, and includes step-by-step merge instructions for students. Issue references in the kit are replaced with issue titles so they don't link to or close unrelated issues in student repos.

Continuation assignments now build their first pull request as a diff from a kit-only base commit, so it no longer overwrites students' work. The user guide documents Continuing Assignments and their overwrite risks.

More reliable provisioning

  • Provisioning shows live progress with a "Stop after this repository" button, keeps running in the background if the window is closed, and saves each repository as soon as it's created
  • Provisioning, Set Up and the instructor copy share one queue that waits out GitHub's "submitted too quickly" limit instead of failing students, and says when the limit should be restored
  • Repositories already created from the assignment's starter kit by an earlier run are recorded instead of reported as errors

Re-releasing expired invitations

An expired invitation brings the Release button back, and Release clears the expired invitation before sending a fresh one. After the due date, a secondary Release button invites students who have an individual extension.

Also in this release

  • Assignment actions (Set Up, Provision, Release, Download) can now be run from the View Assignment page
  • New "Assignment Downloads" settings: a preferred download folder, and optionally shorter per-student folder names to keep Windows paths short
  • Duplicate GitHub usernames within a section are flagged and skipped when provisioning, releasing or downloading
  • Message icon (email / Microsoft Teams) beside each student on the View Assignment page
  • Report a Bug can include recent log information, with student and course details anonymized first
  • Saves no longer undo each other when a dashboard refresh, long-running operations and quick edits overlap
  • Older assignment repos are backfilled with their starter kit version on refresh
  • The Recently Completed card now shows the most recently due completed assignment
  • The Release button no longer reappears before the release date for an assignment released early
  • The enrolment Destination section is hidden unless the student is transferring

@dagilleland dagilleland released this 13 Sep 12:20

Beta build for public distribution.

Improved download experience

The Download action now handles assignments you've already downloaded: choose to skip them, git pull the latest changes, or replace them entirely — with a backup zip and a type-to-confirm gate before anything is replaced.

Improved documentation

The user guides have been expanded with clearer walkthroughs and diagrams.

Also in this release

  • Fixed the instructor-copy modal's look and username detection
  • View/edit pages feel faster: GitHub status now loads in the background instead of blocking the page
  • Fixed stuck/uneditable rows in the student roster editor
  • New Term wizard's Finish tab: layout fixes and a stats summary instead of raw JSON

Beta build for private distribution.

New: message a student directly from their card

You can now reach out to a student straight from their card on the classroom's Students tab — no need to dig up their email address or open Teams yourself first.

Look for the small message icon just before the student's GitHub username:

Student card showing the message icon before the GitHub username

Click it, and CodeHub opens either your default email app (mailto:) or Microsoft Teams with a chat ready to go, depending on which communication service you've configured.

Turning it on

Two settings need to be in place before the icon shows up:

  1. Settings → Student Identification — check Email, so student email addresses are captured and stored.
  2. Settings → Communication Service — turn on Enable a communication service and pick a Provider (Email or Microsoft Teams).

The icon only appears on a student's card once that student actually has an email on file. If it's missing, add it from the roster editor (their classroom's Students tab → Edit roster).

Also in this release

  • Middle-clicking a link now behaves like a normal click, and the right-click context menu is suppressed

  • New Delete page collects every repository-deletion control in one place:
remove a single provisioned repo, bulk-remove an assignment's repos, delete
unused starter kits, or remove an instructor copy. Deleting repositories
    requires the GitHub delete_repo scope.
  • "Update" Actions opens pull requests to bring provisioned repos back in sync
    with an updated starter kit.
  • Assignments can have an instructor-copy repository.
  • Un-enrolled students no longer count toward dashboard and assignment totals.
  • Fixes: Set Up button processing, Ctrl+0 reset zoom, New Term wizard.

  • Redesigned student roster editor: inline editing, range selection, per-row
    delete, and spreadsheet paste.
  • CSV roster import can update existing students, not just add them.
  • Capture student email addresses; mark students as "Inactive" to skip them
    during provisioning.
  • New Feedback and bug-report buttons in the sidebar.
  • Fixes to provisioning flow, assignment card layout, and perceived
    navigation speed.
