How Trunks work
Additional information can be found in the Routing wiki entry.
Trunks can be one of:
Digest: Have username and password as the way to authenticate and authorize calls. Clients must register to the switch (ideally for softphones, and final end users).
IP: Calls will be authorized by ip address.
Also, a trunk can belong to a:
Carrier: Only on-net calls are allowed. No offnet calls are allowed, when originated from a trunk belonging to a carrier.
Subscriber: These are for the typical case where a subscriber can provide its own switch/pbx to originate/terminate calls on its own.
Internal: Internal trunks are for special cases, where there are "associates", "partners", or maybe even own pbxs/softswitches that don't fit as either belonging to a carrier, or a subscriber. Internal trunks can be used to route subscriber calls from multiple/different subscribers through it.
