For my Capstone project, I decided to work on a project to join the DN42 network. This year-long project involved learning more about BGP and VPNs, and then setting up infrastructure and peering with existing members to create a production-grade secure network with connectivity to the DN42 overlay network.
The design stage of my project involved choosing and planning out work on my topic, and occupied the first semester of my senior year. It was broken up into two Design Projects (Design Project 1, Design Project 2), which covered the various decisions required before beginning implementation and other steps like preparing project boards. See my topic description and decomposition for more details and a breakdown of the project.
Although I considered other projects, I settled on the DN42 project, with the following goals:
- Set up a secured, segmented network
- Prepare supporting services such as those needed to protect against route hijacking and internal DNS
- Connect with peers to join DN42
- Provide some service(s) to the rest of the network
I was able to complete these objectives throughout the 4 Sprints during the implementation semester (Sprint 1, Sprint 2, Sprint 3, Sprint 4).
