Sprint 1

Deliverable Statement

During this sprint, I will be preparing the production network which will connect to DN42, as well as gathering the resources (address space) needed to initiate that connection. I will set up the DN42 router, and then will begin reaching out to beginner-friendly peers with whom I can make the first connections.

Outcome

During this 3-week sprint, I completed the majority of the objectives, and what I could not complete I am hopeful I will be able to complete early during Sprint 2. The first thing I did was to find and reserve an allocation on the network, formally joining the network by adding my contact information and creating an organization and autonomous system that will be used by BGP. While this was not a technical step, it opens up the ability to begin sharing routes with peers. I then started the technical steps by setting up the Proxmox hypervisor, and configuring the first of several supporting services, the RTR cache servers.

As it became clear that it would take some time to get the router itself, I chose to set up a staging router running VyOS, so that I could begin prototyping a configuration for the production router. I also spent some time deciding how to allocate IP addresses and planning and documenting firewall rules, which I then added to the router. As a result, the configuration is effectively complete, it simply needs to be loaded on the production router with only a few tweaks necessary.
