Experience report and 2 questions:

I bought this little device:

I didn't want to spend €200 on a Carpe Iter straight away. I wanted to test such device first to see if this would make navigation easier for me.

I thought I could use the + and - buttons to zoom in and out on the maps in Cruiser.
Unfortunately, it turned out that on this device, + was for fast-forwarding and - was for rewinding songs.

Pressing and holding - did cause Cruiser to zoom out, but it was so fast that you could see the whole Map of Germany at once. So pressing and holding was useless.

I installed Button Mapper. But it seems that you can only swap buttons in the paid version.
The Key Mapper app seems to be better suited for this task. But as of Android 11, it no longer has permission to manipulate keyboard inputs. Workaround: Install Shizuku. I hope Shizuku https://github.com/RikkaApps/Shizuku is secure. I have Android 14 And now it gets uncomfortable. For Shizuku, you have to unlock various things in the developer options. I'll spare you the list you have to change. And after every time you start your phone, you have to unlock the developer option again 👎

I then switched External Input Device in Cruiser and activated keyboard
This table helped me a lot:

It works quite well. Now with + und - I can smoothly zoom in and out.
With double klick Minus - I wanted to skip the next waypoint = S but it's pure luck whether a double-click on my device is recognized.

Now my two questions:
1.) Is there an easier way than using Key Mapper and Shizuku?
2.) Couldn't you implement a table in Cruiser under External Input Device and then Keyboard and the user manually enter the codes for his device?
Something like this:
Keycode_Media_Next = 87 -> + -> Zoom map in (The APP Button Mapper gave me the 87)

Or the user could import a JSON file with the conversion codes.

App maps Android keys to app functions.

We cannot know each device's keys, unless they provide a documentation (like WunderLINQ),
so we can map them to app functions and add a specific device profile in the selection menu.

Otherwise the generic "Keyboard" selection often works with most devices,
as they usually use the +/- for zoom.

I know, that you can't know every code for every device. My idea was that the user figure out the codes himself an then enter the codes of the device in Cruiser. So there is no need for installing Key Mapper and Shizuku

In an earlier Cruiser (Beta) version, a message would appear on the screen when it detected any external key press.
We may enable this again in a next Beta, so you can try it with your device and see what device keys appear pressed.

No it is a china device for 5$. In Germany it cost 15€ There is no documentation, no website, no nothing

Keycodes for this device:

Play / Pause toggle KEYCODE_MEDIA_PLAY_PAUSE 85
Next track KEYCODE_MEDIA_NEXT 87
Previous track KEYCODE_MEDIA_PREVIOUS 88

Setup for me with Key Mapper:
Normal Press Play/Pause = B = Add favorite
Long Press Play/Pause = C = Center the map
Next track = + = Zoom in
Previous track= - = Zoom out

What now is great is that
Long press Next track = louder
Long press Previous track = quiter

I did not change the setup for Long/Prev Next track . Now I can comfortable change the volume of my helmet device, during the ride.

But other user could prefer another setup. Because of this, it was my idea that the user can set the keys in cruiser

For me it is not necessary. I saw all codes of my device with the apps Button Mapper and Key Mapper.
And I fixed all my problems with the app key mapper and Shizuku. But now always I start Cruiser, I always have to start key mapper.
Ok I do it with the app MacroDroid.

But for other user it could be helpful. Maybe you implement a switch in cruiser to turn the message for external keys on or off.

Key Mapper = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.sds100.keymapper&hl=gsw
has a Record Trigger Button so it catches every key you press on your external device. With Shizuku https://github.com/RikkaApps/Shizuku Key Mapper can modify the keys also when you habe Android 11 and higher. But I cant recommend Shizuku for an average user.

Button Mapper = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.homebutton&hl=de can also remap your keys but I think you have to pay for it and Key Mapper has more options to fine tune a key press. But it hace a nice menu which is called "add buttons" and then it fetches the keys that are pressed and it shows the keycode eg KEYCODE_MEDIA_NEXT which is normaly 87

I got the new Thork Racing BMW Sync Box remote and would need also to remap some key codes without having to play with key mapper (it works with key mapper but it's quite complex) !

Here are the key codes generated by this remote and I need just to remap the 2 first ones to manage Zoom In and Zoom Out and Wheel right and left long press.
Others are working fine with Cruiser.

Mir geht genauso wie r11d11. 200€ ausgeben für ein Ding auf das ich auch verzichten kann-geht gar nicht.
Wenn es sowas aber für ca.10€(Ali-Express,etc.)gibt dann wirds interessant!
Diese dort angebotenen Fernbedienungen für Motorräder sind in erster linie für Musikwidergabe gedacht(laut/leise/skip).
Um sowas umzufunktionieren müsste die laut/leise Taste zum Zoomen und die Skip-Taste zur Skip-Waypoint Taste benutzt werden....
So ein richiger Luxus wäre eine Tabelle in der man Die Original Bluetooth-Tastenbefehle einfach verschieben kann...Quasi Digital-Amateur-tauglich...

Leeb64 understood what I wanted. Experience has shown that Button Mapper and Shizuku are absolutely no fun on Android 14. I need an editable menu in Cruiser where I can enter my key codes. If that's not possible, then at least an entry for the Chinese models for music control.
Perhaps we could start with the following codes for the China Music Devices:

That are amazing news. I made a quick test with my 15€ china bluetooth input device and the first try it worked for me. Buttons react smooth. Very nice menu implemention 👍 Later I will test more.

One comment though : I have one action on my remote that sends the ESCAPE key code and this one is not recognized by Cruiser when I try to map it to a Cruiser action.

@freeasabeer This is strange, Cruiser listens to all available keys.

Maybe that device does not send the Esc key code?
(Esc is a somewhat special key)

Back to the bike: finally I managed to map that remote action as well but I had to maintain the "key press" for a couple of seconds to get it captured.
I made another test with a regular bluetooth keyboard and the ESC key capture was instantaneous.
So Cruiser is definitively not the culprit here :)

to be honest - I did not follow the complete discussion. But if sth is changed there, please do not forgett BarButtons.
Till now this works really great but I had a problem in the past after an update (remember: #820 (comment) )

I could be helpfull if you habe a external device for bicycle and another device for motorcycle. This probably doesn't happen very often, but if it's easy to implement, it could be useful.

Then, in each app profile you can customize the keys of external devices.

App actions are those in the list, such as move/zoom, add favorite, route overview, etc.

The reset of the odometer and time counters (1 and 2)

I think I found a very smal bug. Settings | Application | Key assignments | 3 Dots | Reset -> Question: Reset Key assignments. I confirmed this with the check mark. I was surprised that all entries were reset. I thought it was just the one I selected with the 3 dots. I thought it wasn't a big deal and left the Key assignments menu using the cross (I thought that meant cancel). Unfortunately, everything was still reset and saved :-( Strangely enough, the number 3 was displayed under Key Assignments. I had previously deleted all commands that I don't use. My device only has 3 buttons. But when I called up Key Assignments again, all 13 entries had been reset to the default :-( Wish: After a reset key assignmnets a cross in menu Key Assigments means cancel.

I'm actually happy with the keyboard mapping. But I'm wondering: can Cruiser distinguish between a long keystroke and a short keystroke? Or even a double-click? Unfortunately, this doesn't work on my external device.

@r11d11 Cruiser and all apps listen for key codes, they can not know how they were produced.

External devices must first support long press and send different key codes for short and long press.
Then the apps can use different actions for the different key codes.

Ich habe mir jetzt mal 2 Fernbedienungen bei Amazon bestellt und wenn die da sind, werde ich mal testen, was da möglich ist. Es wäre cool, wenn man den Namen einer Fernbedienung umbenennen könnte und den Namen der eigenen hinterlegen könnte oder wie schon geschrieben Device 1 selbst umbenennen und dann die Tasten anlernen. Ich möchte dann die Fernbedienung am 2.Motorrad nutzen und mit in den Urlaub nehmen, um dann auch mit Cruiser fahren zu können wie an der BMW mit WunderLINQ.

So, die beiden Fernbedienungen sind heute gekommen und funktionieren super. Die Möglichkeit der Tastenbelegung ist echt super, da man ja jetzt entscheiden kann ob man den Zoom auf laut leise legt oder auf nächster / vorheriger Titel zum Beispiel bei der DQX-Q16 Smart Remote.
Die BT13 ist schlicht und einfach funktional.

So, the two remote controls arrived today and work great. The option to assign buttons is really great, as you can now decide whether to assign the zoom to volume or to next/previous track, for example with the DQX-Q16 Smart Remote.

Zoom:
Regarding the DQX-Q16, I can now confirm that the zoom only causes issues when I use the volume control. I’ve reset the remote control to the settings shown in the screenshot, and now each preset zoom level works as intended. The BT13 also uses each zoom level as intended. For everyone else’s information: I have the problem that the volume control skips zoom levels, causing you to zoom in more than intended. I mentioned this in another thread on Emux.
However, I can recommend that everyone get one of these for a rental motorcycle on vacation.

Bzgl. derDQX-Q16, kann ich jetzt sagen, dass der Zoom nur Probleme macht, wenn ich den Lautstärkenregler nutze. Ich habe jetzt die Fernbedienung noch einmal so eingestellt, wie auf dem Screenshot, und dann wird auch jede vorgegebene Zoom Stufe genutzt. Auch bei der BT13 wird jede Zoom Stufe genutzt wie vorgegeben. Für die anderen zur Info: Ich habe das Problem, dass der Lautstärkenregler Zoom Stufen überspringt und man so mehr zoomt als gewollt. Das hatte ich in einem anderen Bereich mit Emux geschrieben.
Ich kann aber jedem empfehlen sich so eine für den Urlaub anzuschaffen für ein Leihmotorrad.

This is mainly useful when using the phone's volume buttons.
Not for external input devices.

Yes, that's enabled. If it's not enabled, it also adjusts the volume at the same time when you use the volume control as a zoom, which would be the case with both remotes. But that doesn't really change the zoom behavior. I think the way it's configured now works, at least for those two remotes.

Ja, das ist aktiviert. Wenn das nicht aktiviert ist, regelt er parallel auch die Lautstärke, wenn man den Lautstärkenregler als Zoom nutzt, was ja bei beiden Fernbedienungen ja dann auch der Fall wäre. Das ändert aber auch nicht wirklich was am Zoom verhalten. Ich denke, so wie es jetzt konfiguriert ist, passt es zumindest für die beiden Fernbedienungen.

This function works great. I only one problem. Since I have configurd the largest route width and a sign the road overview to the play button, the route width in the overview is also broad, when you see nothing anymore. Is it possible to automatically put back the route width to the default value temporarally as long as the overview is shown? A former request of mine was also to not show the complete route, but only the next 50 KMS or so, means only part of the route from the action GPS location on. Maybe on first press, and then the second press shows the complete route. And the third press exits the overview again.

• Can wait some seconds
• Or press the location button at bottom right
• Or assign a key and use the "Center on map" action.

A colleague who also uses the Cruiser and WunderLINQ is asking if it’s possible to quickly switch between North, 3D, and Ride modes. In the past, this could be done by pressing the compass button. Could this toggle button be added to the button assignments?

Ein Kollege der auch mit dem Cruiser und WunderLINQ fährt, fragt gerade ob es möglich ist, auch die Ausrichtung Nord / 3D / fahrt schnell umzustellen. Früher ging dies duch auch durch drücken auf den Kompass. Könnte man diese Umschalttaste noch mit aufnehmen in die Tastenzuweisung ?

This can be changed in "Settings | Navigation | Navigation orientation".

Why would you need to change this while driving?

Das Setting " in Fahrtrichtung" ist nützlich zur Navigation in Ortschaften und wenn es darum geht wohin man z. Bsp sofort abbiegen muss. Hat man die Navigation aus irgendwelchen Gründen verlassen oder "verloren", dann ist es sehr hilfreich auf die Karte "Nordweisend" schauen zu können - und diese Ansicht sich nicht dauernd dreht (um sich schnell wie auf einer Landkarte aus Papier orientieren zu können). Das kommt z. Bsp oft vor wenn man in der Gruppe fährt und wegen Gewitter die eigentliche Route aufgibt um nicht in den Regen zu kommen etc. . Da ist es wichtig wenn Florenz permanent oben/nördlich, und das Adriatische Meer rechts/westlich liegt und nicht plötzlich Florenz westlich und das Adriatische Meer südlich und sich das alles nach einer Kurve wieder umdreht.
Fazit:

1. In Fahrtrichtung : super für abbiegen und durch Ortschaften (Fahren mit Naviroute)
2. Nördlich : super wenn die Karte sich nicht dauernd drehen darf (Fahren ohne Naviroute)

Today I posted this issue ("driving direction vs. north bound" map) in the new EU GS Forum in the navigation section just curious whether others also have this "problem". As soon you got this feature integrated I will happily post it as USP of Cruiser/WINLINQ navi solution in that forum section.
I am happily awaiting this as this means for me a great relief while driving with Cruiser navi and map only.

Oh Verzeihung, das war ein Missverständnis, ich dachte es geht um die Option in die Tastenbelegung. Wenn das noch kurzfristig möglich wäre wäre das prima- ich bin gerade mit dem Motorrad in der Toskana und fahre nächste Woche mit 8 Freunden insgesamt 10 Routen in Kurviger->Cruiser vorgeplant (jeden Tag 2 Routen, eine hin und eine zurück). Da wäre das natürlich prima wenn ich diese Umschaltung per Taste am Lenker nutzen könnte.

Test successful. It switches to North and then back to 3D. Since I know that @RolfGS uses 2D, it would be cool if the rotation were 3D – 2D – North.

Moin, mit dem WunderLINQ? Also bei mir laufen alle Funktionen Top und das auch mit allen Fernbedienungen die ich bisher angebunden hatte.

Bei den einfachen Fernbedienungen gibt es keinen kurz und lang Druck.

That's right, the external device must support short and long press
and send a different key code to the app for short and long press.
Then the app can recognize the difference.

Bei mir auch, einzig wenn ich zBsp in N bin und blinke, abbiege und den Blinker ausschalte, dann springt Cruiser auf 3D. War zuerst etwas ungewohnt, aber jetzt tippe ich eben 3x den Blinkschalter nach dem Abbiegen ( zB aus/3D- 2D-N) dann bin ich wieder in der letzten Cruiser Kartenausrichtung. Damit kann ich gut leben. Hi, first of all: its not critical at all, the solution is perfect for me.
Sorry that I was unclear in describing, here a 2nd try: lets assume the Cruiser naviscreen is in "N" direction and now I turn left: so I push the button left and after turning I press it to switch off the turn signal. Exactly this press is in parallel activating to switch the Cruiser navi screen from "N"-> "3D" in this example. This means after a turn the Cruiser navi screen is " 1 screen forward"-,say in "3D" , and in case I want get into the former navi screen "N", I need to push the turnlight button 2 more times to get from "3D->2D->N".

We could offer 2 separate map orientation options to assign external keys:

• Map orientation 3D: switch between 3D and north

• Map orientation: switch between 2D and north

So everyone can switch between north and their preferred movement direction: 3D or 2D.

1. For me would be 2D + N ideal - for ToToGSARider I assume 3D+ N ....BUT 3D-2D-N works great for me.! Today I had 2 routes ( each 2x 125 km) in Tuscany - me leading and 7 bikes behind me - it made such a big difference for me in my "lead the group" effort: 1. I had no misturn, 2. to know where we are any time (switch from 2D->N) on a single press of a button gave me a lot of relax - I did never have to stop for checking where we exactly are and 3. it more safety when you do not need to dip your finger on a screen (driver distraction...). Having said this you need to understand that when we ride we are not "procrastinating on the street" we are going pretty dynamic around the corners - means as leader you (I) have often not much time to check when its time to turn etc..Bottom line: very good change in Cruiser features - a real unique selling point of Cruiser to date. I know nor a single navi sw or system offering that feature.

I'm glad it's now possible to assign this feature to a button, since @RolfGS asked me about it. Personally, I can't get the hang of the north-facing orientation at all and would just be switching back and forth between 2D and 3D. But, as @RolfGS already said, it's just amazing what the Cruiser can do these days.

Ich bin Glücklich, dass es jetzt möglich ist, diese Funktion / Möglichkeit zu haben diese auf eine Taste zu legen, da @RolfGS mich danach gefragt hat. Ich persönlich komme mit der Ausrichtung Nord garnicht zurecht und würde wenn nur zwischen 2D und 3D hin und her springen. Es ist aber, wie @RolfGS schon gesagt hat, einfach super was im Cruiser mittlerweile alles geht.
