2. Process of Creating a Manga
- Introduction (Ki)
- Development (Sho)
- Twist (Ten)
- Ketsu (Resolution)
- Act 1 Setup
- Act 2 Confrontation
- Act 3 Resolution
Once you roughly know what your story is about you can start storyboarding. Storyboarding isn't done page by page, meaning you don't look at each page like separate storyboard, rather you look at it like the storyboard of a whole chapter! And when planing out, you plan out two pages at the time, so you can plan where each element goes once your manga is open.
This is trial and error process, so expect to throw some pages out and/or start from the beginning a couple of times.
And that is exactly why this step is important, because by investing time here, it will save you time later, and give you the chance to experiment before investing too much time in drawing. I would even argue that this is the most important part of creating manga, because the bad storyboard can not be fixed later on. So make sure to take time at this step and experiment for as long as you need, or your time allows you to!
Also this is the point in which you plan out where the speech and SFX go, don't forget that.
And when you are more comfortable, use this step to plan out which areas you are going to leave blank, which are going to get filled with ink and which are going to get the Hatching or Screen Tone
After you have your chapter planned out, and your story is looking cohesive, you can begin the next step, and that is sketching! Again when sketching, place two pages in front of you and look at them like it's an open book, so you can place elements in a nice and logical way.
Now, depending on your workflow, whether you are drawing traditionally, digitally or in a hybrid way, you may do Typesetting before or after inking. And since I draw sketch traditionally, but I ink digitally so I like to do Typesetting at this point.
Typesetting is the important part of placing letters inside Speech Bubbles. If done correctly it is unnoticeable, but if done wrong it looks amateur...
In this stage you should ink preferably in this order:
- Panel borders and Speech Bubbles
- Lineart for your Characters, Backgrounds and SFX
- Fill the Black areas
And after that you are 90% done!
- Add hatching lines to the areas that need it
- Apply Screentone Lastly look at the both pages, and see what can be added, fixed!
Good luck on your journey!
