Settings

Your instrument

  • Instrument: Guitar or Bass. Each keeps its own learning‑path progress.
  • Strings: guitar 6 or 7; bass 4, 5 or 6. Changing this resets the tuning to standard for that string count.
  • Tuning: presets for the chosen instrument and string count (the full list is in Chords and tunings). The fretboard underneath shows the open strings. Lessons always teach standard tuning first; the drop tuning appears in the last unit; free drills use the tuning set here.

Display

  • Note names: sharps (C♯) or flats (D♭). Affects every label, staff accidental and chord name; the questions themselves are the same.
  • Left‑handed: mirrors every fretboard so the nut is on the right.
  • Theme: follow the system, or light, or dark.

Practice

  • Sound: hear the note or chord after each answer, played on a real guitar or bass. On by default. Ear training needs it. On iPhone and iPad the sounds mix with other audio and follow the silent switch.
  • Practice weak spots more: the notes, chords and intervals you miss, answer slowly or have not seen for a while come up more often, in lessons and drills. On by default; see Stats and practice.
  • Unlock every lesson: open both paths at once instead of one lesson at a time.
  • Reset progress: forget every completed lesson and score on both paths. Settings and stats are kept. It asks first.
  • Reset stats: forget every answer, time and streak (the Stats tab and weak‑spot practice start from nothing). Lessons and settings are kept. It asks first.

About

  • Sounds: credits for the recordings. Guitar: the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios, a Raimundo 118 classical guitar recorded one string at a time. Bass: Karoryfer Samples' Growlybass, a Squier Jazz Bass (CC0).
  • Buy me a coffee: the tip jar. Fretman is free.
  • Privacy policy: opens PRIVACY.md. These two links are the only URLs the app opens.

Where things are stored

Settings, progress and practice stats live in the platform's standard preferences store on the device (SharedPreferences on Android, UserDefaults on iOS and macOS). Nothing leaves the device.
