Troubleshooting

The chord names look wrong. Check the tuning in Settings first. Names come from the notes a shape sounds, so a shape shown in drop D is named as it sounds in drop D, not as the same fingering would be in standard. If the tuning is right and the name still looks wrong, open a Wrong note or chord issue with the shape, the tuning and the notes you expected.

I see C♯ where I expect D♭ (or the other way round). Settings → Note names.

The staff shows the note an octave higher than the fret sounds. That is how guitar and bass music is written: both instruments read an octave above sounding pitch. The note on the staff is the written pitch.

The next lesson is locked. Pass the one before it on the same path (70% for practice lessons, 80% for tests), or turn on Unlock every lesson in Settings.

No sound. Check Settings → Sound. On iPhone and iPad, the ring/silent switch mutes Fretman: flip it so the orange line is hidden, and turn the volume up. On Linux, the Flatpak needs its audio permission (granted by default; check it with Flatseal if you changed it).

Ear training plays nothing / asks me to turn on sound. Ear questions need sound; the Ear path offers Turn on sound when it is off. See the item above for iPhone.

A new unit appeared before where I was. 0.2.0 added Octave shapes after the first two strings and 0.5.0 added Every place a note lives after The whole fretboard. What you finished stays finished; the new unit is simply the next thing to do. Unlock every lesson lets you skip it.

My stats look empty after changing tuning. Stats are kept per tuning. The menu above the heatmap picks another tuning you have answers in (lessons are always in standard).

My progress disappeared after switching instrument. Progress is kept separately for guitar and bass and for each string count. Switch back and it is still there.

The chord drill will not start / says no chords match. Bass has power chords only; make sure Power chords is ticked. On guitar, at least one of the three families must be on.

macOS: "cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified". The build is not notarized. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway (older macOS: right‑click → Open), once.

macOS: the Dock still shows the old icon after an update. macOS caches app icons. Quit the app, run killall Dock in Terminal, and open it again.

Linux: the AppImage has a different name. From 0.5.0 it is Fretman-<version>-x86_64.AppImage (it was fretboardtrainer-linux-x64-<version>.AppImage). Same app and data; delete the old file.

Android: "app not installed" when updating. A debug build from a development machine is installed under the same name. Uninstall it, then open the release APK.

Something else. Open a bug report with the version (Settings → About), the platform, the instrument and tuning, and a screenshot of the question if there was one.
