Player View Setup

Errors edited this page Jun 24, 2026 · 2 revisions

The Player View is the player-facing window used on a TV, monitor, or projector. It shows a filtered version of the active scene so players see the map, visible tokens, fog of war, effects, drawings, templates, dice results, turn indicators, pings, and laser pointer activity that the GM chooses to share.

The GM View remains private and contains the controls, layer lists, hidden content, and preparation tools.

What The Player View Shows

The Player View shows the player-safe version of a scene.

Depending on the scene and visibility settings, players may see:

  • The active map.
  • The grid, if visible to players.
  • Revealed areas of fog of war.
  • Player-visible tokens.
  • Player-visible drawings and templates.
  • Weather and animated effects.
  • Table pings and laser pointer trails.
  • Dice results, if dice display settings allow them.
  • Turn order indicators, if enabled.

The Player View does not show GM-only controls, private layer lists, hidden tokens, hidden fog tools, or GM-only preparation content.

Open The Player View

To open the Player View:

  1. Open a campaign.
  2. Open the Player View menu.
  3. Choose Open Player View.
  4. Move the Player View window to the player-facing screen if needed.
  5. Use fullscreen when you are ready for players to see it.

You can open the Player View before or after choosing a scene.

Choose A Player Display

If you use the same screen setup often, configure the preferred Player View display.

To choose a display:

  1. Open Player View Setup.
  2. Review the detected displays.
  3. Select the display you want players to use.
  4. Save the setting.
  5. Open or move the Player View to that display.

If the preferred display is disconnected later, Local VTT opens the Player View normally so you can drag it to the correct screen manually.

Use Fullscreen

Fullscreen is useful when using a TV, monitor, or projector as a battle map.

To use fullscreen:

  1. Open the Player View.
  2. Move it to the player-facing display.
  3. Choose the fullscreen option from the Player View controls.

Local VTT preserves Player View fullscreen behavior during scene changes where possible.

If you need to adjust windows or displays during a session, exit fullscreen, move or resize the Player View, then enter fullscreen again.

Send A Scene To Player View

Opening or editing a scene in the GM View does not always mean it is shown to players immediately.

To show a scene to players:

  1. Select the scene in the GM View.
  2. Open the Player View controls.
  3. Choose the option to send or show the scene to Player View.

This gives the GM control over when players see a scene.

For example, you can prepare or adjust a scene privately before revealing it on the Player View.

Player View Waiting Screen

If the Player View is open but no scene is currently being shown, players see a waiting screen.

The waiting screen may appear when:

  • Player View has been opened before a scene is sent.
  • The shown scene was deleted.
  • The shown scene is unavailable.
  • The GM intentionally clears or holds the player display.

This keeps the Player View open instead of closing or exposing private GM content.

Hold And Blackout Modes

Local VTT includes player display modes for controlling what players see between scenes or during table moments.

Use Hold when you want to keep players from seeing scene changes while you prepare.

Use Blackout when you want the player-facing display to go dark.

These modes are useful when:

  • Switching to a new scene.
  • Preparing an encounter.
  • Hiding a reveal until the right moment.
  • Pausing visible table information during a break.

Player Display Scale

Player View Setup includes display scale calibration for physical table displays.

Use display scale calibration when the size of grid squares on the screen matters, such as when:

  • Using minis directly on a horizontal TV.
  • Matching digital grid squares to physical tokens.
  • Calibrating a projector or table display.

The exact physical size depends on the display and setup, so confirm the result visually before play.

Scene Visibility In Player View

Player View visibility is controlled by scene content and layer settings.

Common visibility rules include:

  • GM-only content stays private.
  • Hidden tokens do not appear to players.
  • Player-hidden drawings, templates, effects, or layers do not appear to players.
  • Fog of war can hide parts of the map.
  • In hidden or partially hidden fog modes, player-visible tokens only appear where reveal shapes overlap them.
  • Dice results appear only when dice display settings allow Player View output.
  • Turn order indicators appear only when enabled and configured.

If something does not appear in Player View, check the relevant layer and item visibility settings first.

Using Player View During A Session

A common session flow looks like this:

  1. Open the campaign.
  2. Open Player View.
  3. Move Player View to the TV, monitor, or projector.
  4. Enter fullscreen.
  5. Select the first scene privately in GM View.
  6. Confirm fog, tokens, and visibility settings.
  7. Send the scene to Player View.
  8. Use pings, laser pointer, dice, turn order, and token movement during play.
  9. Use Hold or Blackout when preparing the next reveal.

Troubleshooting Player View

If Player View opens on the wrong display:

  • Move it manually to the correct screen.
  • Reopen Player View Setup.
  • Confirm the preferred display.
  • Save the setting again if needed.

If Player View does not show the expected scene:

  • Confirm that the scene was sent to Player View.
  • Check whether Hold, Blackout, or waiting screen mode is active.
  • Confirm the scene still exists.
  • Check item and layer visibility settings.

If tokens are missing from Player View:

  • Confirm the token is player-visible.
  • Check fog of war.
  • Check whether the token is inside a revealed area.
  • Confirm the Tokens layer is visible to players.

If dice or turn order are missing from Player View:

  • Check dice display settings.
  • Check turn order Player View settings.
  • Confirm the relevant modal or tracker is active.
