Apologies:

Correctly checkpoint Control values on the tape (JHC for Stephan/Sia/G-ADOPT).

TLDR: The checkpoint manager was deleting the new value of Control after each re-evaluation of the ReducedFunctional, so the derivative was then not evaluated at the correct state.

• Original issue: firedrake#5082
• Pyadjoint PR: pyadjoint#257
• Firedrake PR pointing at release with tests: firedrake#5157 (explanation of tests is in the original Firedrake PR pointing at main firedrake#5093).

• single memory checkpointing didn't work
• rerunning with different control value doesn't run with new control value
• fix in pyadjoint (make an attribute public) - approved, merge this into main
• make pyadjoint minor release first, let it upload to pypi
• Firedrake tests need fixing - merge to release branch. Now the release branch works, but the firedrake release will not.
• make firedrake point release (these need to be done quickly)
• Then merge firedrake release into main
• Future discussion: change release policy to set upper bounds
