The whole maya scene is parsed in a top down manner. The topmost node is the world node, then all children are searched. I do it this way to be able to easily use hierarchical inheritance. As you can see, the MayaScene::parseSceneHierarchy() method is a recusive method which calls itself with the children nodes of a current DAG node. The idea behind this is to be able to inherit attributes like a color down the hierarchy in a similiar way it can be done in rib files. There you can define a color "Cd" for a top node and this is inherited by the children.
Of course the attributes which can be inherited are different for all renderers.
