Chonk Blocker Retro 1.2.0
Full couch control: navigate everything with a controller, with pad-family button glyphs, Steam Deck detection, and controller hot-plug fixed.
What's in this release
- Navigate the whole app from the couch: SELECT+START opens settings, the d-pad moves focus, shoulders switch tabs, the bottom face button confirms, and the right face button backs out — on the settings sheet and the exit confirmation alike.
- Show button prompts as original vector glyphs that match the connected pad — Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or Steam Deck — with keyboard keycaps when no controller is in use.
- Detect controllers plugged in after launch; hot-plug previously required a restart because SDL's device events were never serviced, which also fixes the RESCAN CONTROLLERS button.
- Launch fullscreen with pad-first prompts on Steam Deck and gamescope sessions, and honor a distribution-channel switch (direct / steam / mac-app-store) like the flagship game.
- Add Steam packaging scaffolding (Deck-safe AppImage launcher, default Steam Input profile, SteamPipe publisher) and the Mac App Store entitlement baseline — see docs/steam-and-mac-app-store.md for the remaining owner steps.
- Ship the 1.0.8 cartridge unchanged.
Four ways to play
- Standalone SNES ROM — a native 16-bit cartridge image for compatible hardware and emulators.
- macOS — Apple-silicon DMG, Developer ID signed and notarized.
- Windows — x64 desktop application with Azure-signed executables.
- Linux — x86-64 AppImage.
Every asset has a sibling SHA-256 checksum. The desktop editions contain the exact standalone ROM published here.

An elegant way out: closing the game now opens a cabinet-styled confirmation instead of quitting instantly, with a quit action reachable from settings and keyboard shortcuts.
What's in this release
- Open a Leave the Arcade confirmation sheet when the window is closed, Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Q is pressed (⌘Q on macOS), or the new QUIT GAME button in settings is used — the game no longer ends without asking.
- Keep playing is the safe default: Enter chooses the highlighted action, arrow keys switch between Keep Playing and Exit Game, and Escape always returns to the game.
- Pause emulation and mute audio while the sheet is open, and return keyboard focus to the game seamlessly on resume.
- Add a quit path reachable in fullscreen, where the window's close button is not available.
- Ship the 1.0.8 cartridge unchanged.

Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.8
Replaces Uptown Circuit with a new night-drive funk arrangement and ships the refreshed cartridge in every desktop edition.
What's in this release
- Replace Uptown Circuit with a new 32-bar night-drive funk arrangement in the cartridge soundtrack and hidden sound lab.
- Bundle the refreshed cartridge into the macOS, Windows, and Linux desktop editions, which had shipped the 1.0.6 cartridge in 1.0.7.
- Carry the 1.0.7 Linux desktop fixes unchanged: stable focus and pause behavior on Wayland compositors, resilient audio across focus changes, and correct fullscreen scaling.

Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.7
Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.7
Linux desktop fixes: stable focus and pause behavior on Wayland compositors, resilient audio across focus changes, and correct fullscreen scaling.
What's in this release
- Treat the native game surface and the desktop window as a single focus owner and only pause after a short grace period confirms focus left the application, so hovering no longer pauses or mutes the game under focus-follows-mouse compositors such as Hyprland and Sway.
- Mute audio at the producer during pauses instead of stopping and flushing the device line; rapid stop/flush cycles wedged PipeWire's ALSA bridge and left the game permanently silent after focus changes.
- Reopen the audio device automatically after a mid-write failure instead of going silent, and hold a deeper 96 ms startup cushion so PipeWire's first burst reads cannot underrun a freshly primed line.
- Release the OpenGL surface lock between frames on Linux and wait for the game surface to adopt its new size before resuming, so compositor-driven fullscreen and resizes apply instead of timing out after five seconds and leaving the output at its old size.
- Export _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING=1 from the AppImage launcher on wlroots compositors and declare StartupWMClass so docks and taskbars group the window correctly.
- Ship the exact 1.0.6 cartridge unchanged; this release updates the desktop application only.

Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.6
Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.6
Three new after-dark tracks, steady musical time under pressure, and cleaner active-pair landings.
- Signal Fires, Eventide Glass, and Static Hearts join the cartridge soundtrack and hidden sound lab.
- Arcade and Endless now rotate through nine match tracks without repeats inside a shuffle bag.
- Attack rows and danger height no longer change the Terrific Audio Driver song clock.
- Fast drops now meet the stack on an exact cell boundary—no shortened final pixel step and no snap-back.
- The finishing-attack reveal and corrected HP sound routing from 1.0.5 remain intact.
- The 256 KiB ROM passed bsnes sound-lab and finishing-hit QA plus all six Java/SNES parity scenarios.
The standalone LoROM cartridge runs in compatible emulators, flash carts, and original hardware. A SHA-256 checksum is included.

Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.5
A warmer match soundtrack and a clearer finish when a decisive attack ends the round.
- Pressure District, Power Play, Neon Esplanade, Gold Coast Shuffle, and Shakedown Alley now share Uptown Circuit's warmer production language while keeping their own groove and harmonic identity.
- Brittle lead stacks, constant bright arpeggios, scratchy plucks, and detuned melody doubles are gone from the match bag.
- Decisive inbound attacks now land visibly before the defeat result appears.
- HP hit and KO sounds follow the generated Terrific Audio effect IDs.
- The hidden sound lab, 48 kHz bsnes audio captures, KO reveal, and all Java/SNES parity scenarios passed before release.
The standalone 256 KiB LoROM cartridge runs in compatible emulators, flash carts, and original hardware. A SHA-256 checksum is included.
Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.4
Cartridge audio update
This is a ROM-only publication while the self-hosted macOS, Windows, and Linux build runners are unavailable. The existing signed desktop downloads remain the current desktop release; their 1.0.4 rebuild will use this exact cartridge when the runners return.
What changed
- Replaced Uptown Circuit with a warmer night-drive funk arrangement.
- Removed the piercing upper-register layer, detuned lead double, and brittle saw harmony.
- Preserved the cartridge song ID, loop timing, and hidden Chonk Lab track browser.
- Revalidated the complete loop through bsnes at 48 kHz stereo.
- Passed sound-lab input, audio-RAM, production-menu, and Java/SNES parity gates.

Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.3
Chonk Blocker Retro 1.0.3
A desktop performance release with exact-latch controls, explicit GPU presentation, full CRT effects, and resilient hardware-shaped audio.
What's in this release
- Sample keyboard and controller state at the emulated SNES hardware latch, with a native input path that bypasses Swing's repaint queue.
- Present through an explicit OpenGL 3 backend with calibrated late submission, adaptive frame-delay timing, and no driver-queued video frame.
- Move the full CRT treatment to a multi-pass linear-light shader pipeline with scanlines, phosphor masks, convergence, composite bleed, persistence, bloom, curvature, glare, vignette, gamma, and dither.
- Rebuild S-DSP playback around four-point Gaussian interpolation and continuous resampling, then feed a clock-adaptive host audio queue without discontinuous sample dropping.
- Exercise raw and packaged GPU, focus-resume, frame-age, timing, and audio-recovery gates on macOS, Windows, and Linux before publication.
Four ways to play
- Standalone SNES ROM — a native 16-bit cartridge image for compatible hardware and emulators.
- macOS — Apple-silicon DMG, Developer ID signed and notarized.
- Windows — x64 desktop application with Azure-signed executables.
