Backstop v1.7.0: Safer snapshot analysis and restores

@informent informent released this 12 Oct 16:48

Backstop 1.7 improves snapshot capture and restore safety.

  • Reject filesystem links in source trees, backup libraries, snapshot manifests and restore destinations.
  • Detect directory collisions and files blocking parent folders before copying the first restore file.
  • Record file sizes from snapshot copies and reject the reserved root manifest.json filename without changing the source.
  • Preserve existing snapshot formats, settings and scheduled tasks.

Windows application and installer CI passed on the release commit. Engine, analysis and scheduling regressions passed. The downloaded portable executable is checked with headless comparison and restore-preview commands before publication. Setup installs for the current account and bundles the runtime; a portable ZIP is also included.

Restore copies are not transactional. Keep snapshots and target folders unchanged during restores. Local symbolic-link fixture creation was unavailable; hosted CI results are linked in repository Actions.

Repairs damaged text encoding in interface labels, status messages and documentation. Arrows, symbols and punctuation now use valid UTF-8 text. Setup instructions reference this release.

Download Backstop-v1.6.1-setup.exe for automatic Windows setup with the bundled .NET runtime, or use the portable ZIP.

Verification: application regression and packaged UI checks passed. The setup installer passed first install, reinstall, installed application launch, uninstall and user-file preservation checks on a hosted Windows runner.

Download Backstop-v1.6.0-setup.exe for automatic setup. It bundles the .NET runtime, installs for the current user, creates a Start menu shortcut and registers an uninstaller. A desktop shortcut is optional.

  • Silent deployment is supported.
  • Reinstallation preserves existing user data.
  • Uninstall removes installed application files and preserves unrecognized user files and legacy settings.
  • The portable Windows ZIP remains available.

Verification: application regression and packaged UI checks passed. The exact setup installer passed first install, reinstall, installed app launch, uninstall and user-file preservation tests on a hosted Windows runner.

Installer CI: https://github.com/informent/Backstop/actions/runs/38148859575
App CI: https://github.com/informent/Backstop/actions/runs/38148859546

Also adds verified snapshot comparison, content change classification, byte deltas and headless JSON restore-impact reports. The graphical comparison interface is still in development.

Backstop v1.5.1: New name, existing backups preserved

Backstop is the new name for OpenBackup.

  • Updated app window, executable, installer and documentation.
  • Existing profiles, schedules and activity logs stay in their original storage location.
  • The scheduled task keeps its identity. Run Install.ps1 after installing this version to update its executable path.

Download and extract the Windows ZIP, then run Backstop.exe. Keep the included DLLs beside the executable. No separate .NET installation is required.

Verification: local backup, restore safety, scheduling and retention regression tests passed. Hosted Windows build, packaging, app launch and executable product metadata checks passed. This package contains that tested build.
