v5.3.4
A modernized version of the Google provider for TbSync for Thunderbird 153+
Stable release of the Google provider for TbSync v5. Requires Thunderbird 153 or newer.
Like TbSync itself, the goal of the rewrite is to be a modern WebExtension: the setup and settings dialogs are HTML instead of XUL, and the only legacy code left is what migrates accounts from earlier versions. What it syncs is unchanged - contacts and contact groups, through Google's People API.
Before you update
Update all parts together. TbSync v5.3.* only works with provider add-ons from the modern v5.3.* family. A newer TbSync refuses an older provider and says so in the Event Log.
Accounts created with early v5 versions get their settings migrated, and their resources are locked. If the previous version left changes that were never synchronized, TbSync 5.3.7 offers to migrate the account: it rebuilds each folder from the server and asks which of those changes to restore. Otherwise, disconnect and re-connect the account to start fresh.
Disconnecting deletes that account's local address book.
New
- Support for Google's Web OAuth client, the flow Google now expects. The desktop client the legacy add-on used is deprecated. Existing ones may keep working, but set new credentials up as a web client. How to generate your own Google Cloud Console project credentials walks through it, including the redirect URL you have to authorize.
- An end-to-end test suite that runs against a real Google account, so every sync path is exercised before a release
- Updated for the protocol TbSync 5.3 speaks. There are no changes to what is synchronized or how
Fixed
- The provider is detected again after a Thunderbird restart
- Account setup could fail to finish, because the add-on answered internal messages meant for another part of itself
- The add-on no longer asks for the "management" permission
- How many local changes are still waiting to be synchronized is now cleared when a sync finishes, instead of staying on the last count until the next edit
- A synchronization the provider asked for and then waited on is no longer timed out after 30 seconds, which could report a failure for work that had in fact succeeded
- The add-on no longer changes the size of TbSync's Event Log buffer. That is TbSync's setting, and a provider raising it on its own overrode what had been chosen there
- The add-on is no longer disabled on Thunderbird newer than 154
- Files inside the add-on package carried a date that does not exist, which one tool read as 1979 and another as 2159. They carry a real one now. Invisible in Thunderbird, but it matters to anyone repackaging the add-on - TbSync #815
Maintainership
