v1.0.7 — Human-readable sizes & drives view

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 29 Jun 21:14

What's new

  • Panel size column now shows K/M/G instead of raw bytes
  • Alt-F1/F2 show a browsable drives list (no more type-the-letter prompt)
  • Same improvements in WinCC (Windows console port)

cc v1.0.6 — search results as a browsable panel

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 29 Jun 19:02

Find and grep now return their results into a browsable panel — the same virtual-panel mechanism as the zip browser — instead of taking over the screen.

Search results panel

  • Alt-F7 (find) lists every matching file; Enter jumps the panel to that file's folder, cursor on it.
  • Alt-F8 (grep) lists one row per matching file (deduplicated), with each file's first-match line shown in the size column; Enter opens the F3 viewer scrolled to that line.
  • The list opens with a .. row at the top; Esc (or Enter on ..) leaves it and re-lists the real folder, just like backing out of a zip.

Notes

  • The default CC.COM build now includes the results panel (FEAT_RESULTS). To make room alongside the zip browser under the 64 KB segment wall, the search path-heap and the built-in F3 text-pager cap were trimmed; the pager now shows the first 8 KB of a large file (it already truncated big files — external viewers handle those).
  • CCPOP.COM (the classic single-pop-up-menu build) keeps the previous direct CCFIND/CCGREP behavior.

The distribution zip contains both CC.COM and CCPOP.COM, every bundled helper, the Gold Box game-data helpers, and the runtime data files. Mount the folder as a DOS drive and run CC.

cc v1.0.5 — flicker-free render, mouse menus, brief view, configurable clock

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 29 Jun 17:46

Nine UX fixes and features over v1.0.4.

Features

  • Flicker-free rendering — every frame is composed in an off-screen back buffer and blitted to video RAM in a single rep movsw, so moving the cursor never shows a partial repaint.
  • Mouse-driven menu bar — click a title (Files / Commands / Options / Tools) to open that menu straight from the file view (no F9 first); inside an open menu the mouse picks items, hops between menus along the bar, and an outside click closes it.
  • Brief 3-column view — toggle the panel body between the full list and a names-only 3-column layout with Alt-F3 (DOSBox intercepts the classic Ctrl-F10) or the Options menu. Each panel toggles independently.
  • Configurable clock — clock = cmdrow | topright | off in cc.ini places the live HH:MM:SS on the command row (default), over the menu bar, or hides it.

Fixes

  • PgDn now matches the Right arrow (both page by the same step).
  • Top-right frame corner draws the correct corner glyph.
  • Brief-view left panel no longer drops names (a cell-width overflow had wrapped the right panel's column onto the left panel's row).
  • Mouse cursor can no longer get "lost" (invisible-but-present) after a file op or alt-tab — show/hide is reference-counted.

Builds

Distribution zip contains both CC.COM (pull-down menu bar) and CCPOP.COM (classic single pop-up menu), every bundled helper, the Gold Box game-data helpers, and the runtime data files. Mount the folder as a DOS drive and run CC.

cc v1.0.4 — Gold Box file types, cd-on-exit, Windows console port

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 27 Jun 00:07

Claude Commander v1.0.4 — Gold Box file types, cd-on-exit, and a Windows console port

This release adds support for opening SSI Gold Box (AD&D) game-data files
straight from the panels, leaves your shell in the panel's directory on exit,
ships a timestamp tool, and includes an experimental native Windows console
build. All of the new file-type support is pure configuration — no change to
cc.com itself.

New: Gold Box (SSI AD&D) game-data support

Press Enter to browse a Gold Box container as a folder, or F3 to view a
member — for Pool of Radiance, the Krynn trilogy, and friends:

  • .glb master libraries route through CCGLB, a dispatcher that sniffs each
    chunk and hands it to the right lister: digitized sound → CCSND, image
    masters → CCHLIB, area maps → CCGEO.
  • .tlb/.hti image masters (CCHLIB), .geo area maps (CCGEO),
    .daa/.dai data (CCDAA), .gbi images (CCGB), .dax containers
    (CCGBC).

Verified end-to-end on real game data (e.g. GEO.GLB → browse M0000.GEO /
M0001.GEO; a .dax → its B0000.GBD member).

New: "cd on exit"

Quit cc and the shell is left in the active panel's directory (Norton/Volkov
style). On DOS this is free — the current directory is global system state, so cc
just CHDIRs there before terminating.

New: CCTOUCH.COM — set a file's date/time

CCTOUCH <file> [YYYY-MM-DD [HH:MM[:SS]]] (defaults to now). Handles read-only
files. Bundled in the distribution.

New (experimental): wincc — native Windows console port

A separate C build that runs Claude Commander directly in a Windows 10/11
console (no DOSBox/16-bit subsystem) — dual panels, file ops, F3 viewer, sort,
themes, quick search, live resize, and cd-on-exit. It shares the DOS design,
not the source; the DOS build remains the focus. (Not part of the DOS zip below.)

Extensibility — add file types yourself, no recompile

cc.ini is read at startup, so a new type just needs a helper .COM on the
drive and one line:

  • [open] ext = HELPER → Enter browses it as a folder.
  • [view] ext = HELPER → F3 runs your viewer.
  • [tools] Label = PROG [key] → a Tools-menu entry / hotkey running PROG <file>.

Docs

  • README gains a Bundled tools & file associations reference (every helper,
    what it does, how to run it).
  • A cross-platform plan (PORTABLE_PLAN.md) sketching a future portable C core
    sharing the DOS tool spec + tests.

Download: cc-v1.0.4.zip — MOUNT it as a DOS drive (DOSBox or real
hardware / MiSTer ao486) and run CC. Press F1 inside for the key reference.

cc v1.0.3 -- hex editor + F3 pager editing hub

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 24 Jun 11:19

Claude Commander v1.0.3 — hex editor + the F3 pager becomes an editing hub

This release turns the F3 viewer into a place you can edit from, and ships a
new bundled hex editor.

New: CCHEXED.COM — a small overwrite-only hex editor

  • Loads a file (up to 48 KB) and shows an offset / hex / ASCII grid with a byte cursor.
  • Move with arrows, PgUp/PgDn, Home/End.
  • Type hex digits to overwrite the byte under the cursor (high nibble, then low, auto-advancing).
  • F2 writes the buffer back in place — the file size never changes (no insert/delete).
  • Esc quits.

F3 pager: press E to edit

  • In text mode, E opens the editor configured by editor = in cc.ini.
  • In hex mode (toggle with H), E opens CCHEXED on the same file.
  • cc reloads the file when the editor exits, so you see your changes immediately.

This mirrors how the [view] map already picks a viewer per file type: the
pager is now the hub, built-in modes (text, hex) render in place and each can
hand off to its matching editor.

Configurable editor (carried in from the prior change)

  • editor = in cc.ini selects what F4 (and the pager's text-mode E) launches:
    CCEDIT (default), EDIT (DOS Editor), CCHEXED, or any editor on the PATH.

Notes

  • dist/ now includes CCHEXED.COM; README and F1 help document the E key and editor = CCHEXED.
  • The MIN build (no editor feature) is unaffected.

cc v1.0.2 -- built-in hex view + Tools menu

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 24 Jun 09:17

Claude Commander v1.0.2

New in this release:

  • Built-in HEX view in the F3 file viewer. Open any file with F3 and press
    H to toggle between the text pager and a canonical hex dump (offset / 16
    bytes / ASCII gutter) of the same file -- no external program.
  • Tools menu on the pull-down menu bar (Files / Commands / Options / Tools).
    The Tools items run the bundled helpers on the cursor / panel files so
    they feel built in:
    Hex dump -- the F3 viewer in hex mode
    Checksum (CRC-32) -- via CCSUM
    Compare -- CCDIFF: this panel''s file vs the other panel''s
    Split file... -- CCSPLIT, prompts for a piece size
    Wildcard rename... -- CCREN, prompts for source + destination masks

Also fixes a viewer layout bug from v1.0.1 where the full-screen pager left
a blank top line and overran the bottom bar under the persistent menu bar.

Contents: CC.COM (menu-bar build), CCPOP.COM (classic pop-up-menu build),
all helper .COMs, cc.ini / cc.hlp / da.lng. Unzip and run CC.COM; press F1
inside for the key reference.

Claude Commander v1.0.1 -- persistent menu bar

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 23 Jun 23:09

This release makes the Norton-style pull-down MENU BAR a permanent, always-on
fixture across the top row -- you can see it the moment cc starts, no key press
needed.

Menu bar

  • CC.COM shows the bar (Files / Commands / Options) on the top row at all
    times. Press F9 to drop the current menu down, Left/Right to switch
    menus, Up/Down + Enter to run an item, Esc to close.
  • Prefer the classic single pop-up menu (and one extra file row)? Run
    CCPOP.COM, also in the zip.

Also in this build

  • Alt-F10 directory-tree browser
  • Brief 3-column panel view (Ctrl-F10); table-driven view registry
  • Archive & disk-image browsing (.zip/.arj/.rar/.d64/.t64)
  • The full external-helper set (editor, find, grep, hex, sum, diff, split,
    join, rename, image + wav viewers)

Download

Grab cc-v1.0.1.zip, unzip onto a DOS drive (or MOUNT the folder in DOSBox),
and run CC.COM. Press F1 inside for the full key reference.

Claude Commander v1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@kblood kblood released this 23 Jun 22:39

First tagged release of Claude Commander (cc) -- a Norton-Commander-style
two-panel file manager for DOS / MiSTer ao486, written in 16-bit x86 assembly
as a single resident .COM plus a set of external helper tools.

Download

Grab cc-v1.0.0.zip, unzip it onto a DOS drive (or MOUNT the folder in
DOSBox), and run CC.COM. Press F1 inside for the full key reference.

What's in the box

  • CC.COM -- the file manager (pop-up F9 command menu)
  • CCBAR.COM -- identical build, but F9 opens a Norton-style pull-down
    MENU BAR (Files / Commands / Options) instead of the pop-up
  • Both builds include the new Alt-F10 directory-tree browser
  • External helpers: editor, find, grep, zip/arj/rar/d64/t64 browsers,
    image + wav viewers, hex/sum/diff/split/join/rename tools
  • Data files: cc.ini, cc.hlp, da.lng

Highlights

  • Two-panel browser with tag/copy/move/delete, sort, column cycling,
    quick-search, mask tagging, file-attribute editing
  • Archive & disk-image browsing (.zip/.arj/.rar/.d64/.t64) as folders
  • Alt-F10 modal directory-tree browser
  • Brief 3-column panel view (Ctrl-F10); table-driven view registry
  • Optional Norton-style pull-down menu bar (CCBAR.COM)
  • Build configurator (configure.ps1): pick exactly the widgets you want;
    resident size scales with the set (min build ~53 KB, full ~62 KB)

Builds clean as min / std / full profiles; the resident image stays inside
the 64 KB real-mode segment.
