Salesforce has very powerful record types that you can assign to Contacts, however, you can only assign one record type to a given contact. Salesforce does provide "Contact Roles" that allow you to assign different roles to contacts within an account, case, contract, or opportunity.

Contact Types are designed to handle situations where you want to handle differences at the level of the contacts themselves. Example: We have some contacts who are board members and some who are volunteers, and some are both board members and volunteers.

The contact types packages installs the objects/rules/triggers/fields necessary to let you assign multiple types to the same contact.
