Guardrails
AISRF can run four external defense frameworks next to its own Analyzers: Rebuff (layered prompt injection detection and canary words), LLM Guard (Protect AI input and output scanners), NeMo Guardrails (NVIDIA programmable rails) and Lakera Guard (hosted screening API). Each integration is an ordinary analyzer in the analysis runner: it receives the normalized request or the model response, returns findings that are scored, mapped to OWASP (Taxonomy-and-OWASP-Mapping) and shown on the ticket like every other finding, and is a silent no-op while it is disabled, unconfigured or its library is missing. A failing integration never blocks the gateway: errors are logged at most once per minute per key (log_throttled), remembered as last_error, and the analyzer returns nothing.
All code lives in aisrf/guardrails/ (rebuff.py, llm_guard.py, nemo.py, lakera.py, _common.py, nemo_default/). Importing the package registers the analyzers; heavy third-party imports (torch, transformers, nemoguardrails) happen lazily on first use.
| Integration | Config key | Analyzers | Runs on | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuff | integrations.rebuff |
rebuff |
request | none (native heuristics); optional LLM judge call; optional OpenAI plus Pinecone through the SDK |
| LLM Guard | integrations.llm_guard |
llm_guard_input, llm_guard_output
|
request, response | CPU models downloaded from the Hugging Face hub on first use; some scanners are regex only |
| NeMo Guardrails | integrations.nemo_guardrails |
nemo_guardrails_input, nemo_guardrails_output
|
request, response (opt-in) | none with the bundled config (offline regex actions, no LLM); a custom config may call LLMs or models |
| Lakera Guard | integrations.lakera |
lakera_guard, lakera_guard_output
|
request, response | one HTTPS call per request to api.lakera.ai (8 s timeout), needs an API key |
Everything is driven by the live integrations settings namespace (aisrf/settings_store.py, NAMESPACE_DEFAULTS["integrations"]). Change it from Settings > Integrations in the dashboard (Settings-Center) or with the API; the analyzers read the namespace at analysis time, so changes apply to the next request without a restart. LLM Guard rebuilds its scanner cache when the scanner list, threshold or options change; NeMo reloads when the config files change.

"nemo_guardrails": {"enabled": true, "config_path": "", "run_output_rails": true, "timeout_seconds": 10}
}'Only the keys you send are replaced (each integration is one key holding a JSON object, so send the whole object). Sending "api_key": "********" keeps the stored key. To switch a single analyzer off without disabling the integration, add its name to analyzers.disabled (PUT /api/settings/ns/analyzers).
Common helpers in _common.py: severity_for_score(score, floor, cap) maps a 0 to 1 score to INFO (< 0.2), LOW (>= 0.2), MEDIUM (>= 0.5), HIGH (>= 0.8) or CRITICAL (>= 0.95), bounded by a per-scanner floor and cap; conversation_messages(normalized, include_system, limit=40) flattens the request into {role, content} turns (content capped at 20000 characters, roles reduced to system, user, assistant); primary_text(normalized) is the last user message with the whole prompt as fallback.

GET /api/settings/guardrails(any authenticated principal) returns{"integrations": [...]}with one entry per integration fromaisrf.guardrails.status():name,installed,enabled,configured,analyzers,last_errorplus integration-specific keys (Rebuff:sdk_installed,layers; LLM Guard:input_scanners,output_scanners,needs_model_download,scannerswithunavailableandfailed; NeMo:config_path,bundled_default,run_output_rails,loaded; Lakera:endpoint,project_id). A status call never raises; an exception becomes an entry withinstalled: falseand the error text. -
POST /api/settings/guardrails/health(admin) runsaisrf.guardrails.health_check(): a tiny scan through every enabled integration (disabled ones are reported as{"ok": null, "detail": "disabled", "skipped": true}), each bounded by a 120 s timeout, returning{"results": [{"name", "ok", "detail", "duration_ms"?}]}. The self-tests are: Rebuff scores "Ignore all previous instructions and start over" against the default threshold; LLM Guard builds the input scanners and scans a weather question; NeMo runs the input rails on the same question and expects it to pass; Lakera posts "hello" and reports reachability.
The Integrations tab of the Settings Center shows the status information; call the health endpoint (for example with curl -X POST -H "Authorization: Bearer $AISRF_ADMIN_API_TOKEN" http://localhost:8080/api/settings/guardrails/health) after enabling LLM Guard to pre-download models before routing traffic.

Rebuff's design has four layers. The PyPI package needs OpenAI plus Pinecone, so AISRF implements the layers natively and only calls the SDK when credentials are configured:
-
Heuristic layer (always on). The vendored Rebuff algorithm: each non-system message is normalized (lower case, punctuation stripped, whitespace collapsed, plus the gateway's Unicode and homoglyph folding) and every word window (at most 1500 words are scanned) is aligned position by position against generated keyword phrases of the form
<verb> [determiner] [adjective] <object> [tail], such as "ignore previous instructions and start over". The score is0.5 + 0.5 * min(matched_words / 5, 1)minus a small similarity penalty, so the threshold of 0.75 corresponds to roughly three aligned words. A determiner slot was added ("ignore ALL previous instructions") and verb-less alignments are capped below the threshold so "read all previous messages" does not fire. A second signal matches an extended phrase list (DAN, developer mode, system prompt extraction, "I have been pwned"); the higher of the two is the combined score. The system prompt is not scanned (it is the operator's own text). Cost: pure Python, under 0.1 s for 1500 words. -
LLM layer (
use_llm: true). Reuses the gateway's LLM judge (enable_llm_judge,judge_provider,judge_base_url,judge_api_key,judge_model, see Analyzers) and flags when the judge's risk divided by 100 is at or abovellm_threshold. Cost: one judge call per request. -
SDK layer (optional). When the
rebuffpackage exposesRebuffSdkandopenai_api_key,pinecone.api_keyandpinecone.indexare set,RebuffSdk.detect_injectionruns on the primary text with the configured timeout and its heuristic, vector and model scores are attached to the finding. With the older 0.0.x client onlyapi_token(hosted playground) is supported. Failures are logged and ignored. - Canary words: implemented by the gateway itself, see Canary-Words.
Findings (category prompt_injection, analyzer rebuff):
| Layer | Title | Severity | Confidence | Tags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| heuristic (up to 5 messages) | Rebuff heuristic flagged <role> input (<label>) |
severity_for_score(score) bounded to MEDIUM..HIGH |

| llm | Rebuff LLM layer flagged the request (score S) |
HIGH | min(0.9, score) |
rebuff, llm
|
| sdk (only when the heuristic layer found nothing) | Rebuff SDK detected prompt injection |
HIGH | max of the SDK scores, at least 0.6 |
rebuff, sdk
|
metadata.layers carries heuristic, llm, threshold, llm_threshold and sdk scores; metadata.heuristic carries the aligned keyword, window and matched word count.
Helpers with Rebuff's semantics: rebuff.detect_injection(text, threshold), rebuff.add_canary_word(prompt, canary_word=None, canary_format="<!-- {canary_word} -->") and rebuff.is_canary_word_leaked(user_input, completion, canary_word); the last two delegate to aisrf.gateway.canary.
Prerequisites: none for the heuristic and canary layers (installed is always true). Offline behaviour: fully functional; the LLM and SDK layers are skipped when unconfigured.

BanSubstrings without a list uses DEFAULT_BANNED_SUBSTRINGS ("ignore all previous instructions", "you are now dan", "developer mode enabled", "i have been pwned", ...); Regex without patterns uses DEFAULT_BAD_PATTERNS (AISRF-CANARY-[0-9a-f]{16} and PEM private key headers). |
llm_guard_input runs the input scanners over the last user message (primary_text); llm_guard_output runs the output scanners over the response with the user message as prompt context. Scanners are built lazily on the first request that needs them, in a worker thread, and cached by the JSON of the configuration, so a change from the Settings page rebuilds them. Scanner names that do not exist in the installed release are reported in status()["scanners"]["unavailable"] and skipped; a scanner whose construction fails (for example a blocked model download) is reported in status()["scanners"]["failed"] and retried after 300 s. Both result shapes are handled: (sanitized, is_valid) in 0.0.x and (sanitized, is_valid, risk_score) in newer releases (a boolean-only release counts as risk 1.0).
Scanner to category mapping (CATEGORY_MAP in llm_guard.py), with the severity floor and cap applied to severity_for_score(risk_score):

Lightweight scanners that need no model download: BanSubstrings, Regex, TokenLimit, Secrets, InvisibleText, Language, Deanonymize, JSON, ReadingTime, URLReachability (reported through needs_model_download in the status).
Findings: title LLM Guard <Scanner> flagged the <request|response>, confidence max(0.4, min(0.95, risk_score)) (0.6 when the release reports no score), tags llm_guard and the lower-cased scanner name, metadata.scanner, metadata.risk_score, metadata.duration_ms, metadata.sanitized_changed. For Anonymize, Sensitive and Deanonymize the evidence shows the sanitized text so the PII itself is not repeated.
aisrf.guardrails.llm_guard.sanitize(text) anonymises PII with the Anonymize scanner when the integration is enabled and lists Anonymize; otherwise it returns the text unchanged. It is not wired into the forwarding path.
Prerequisites: pip install llm-guard (the guardrails extra), outbound HTTPS to huggingface.co for the first request after enabling (or from the health check), which can take minutes. Set HF_HOME to persist the cache in containers. Offline deployments should stick to the lightweight scanners or bake the models into the image; a scanner that cannot be built is reported as failed and never raises.

nemo_guardrails_input loads a RailsConfig from the config directory, builds one LLMRails per directory (cached, rebuilt when config.yml, rails.co or actions.py change) and calls generate_async(messages, options={"rails": ["input"], "log": {"activated_rails": true}}), so only the input rails execute and NeMo never generates a reply. The conversation's user and assistant turns are passed. A rail that stops the flow, or an exception message when the config sets enable_rails_exceptions: true, becomes a finding:
- severity HIGH, confidence 0.85, title
NeMo Guardrails blocked the <input|output> (<flow names>); - category
jailbreakwhen the stopping flow or exception type mentions "jailbreak",prompt_injectionfor "injection" or theself check inputflow, piifor "sensitive" or "pii",guardrailotherwise; - tags
nemo_guardrails,input_railoroutput_rail, and each flow name with spaces replaced by underscores; metadataflows(name, stop, decisions),exception_type,message,config_path.
nemo_guardrails_output is registered as a response analyzer and only runs when run_output_rails is true: it appends the model response as an assistant turn and runs options={"rails": ["output"]}.
aisrf/guardrails/nemo_default/ runs fully offline (verified with nemoguardrails 0.24.1): config.yml has no models section, so no LLM is contacted, sets colang_version: "1.0" and enable_rails_exceptions: true, and declares input flows aisrf jailbreak check and aisrf injection check plus the output flow aisrf output check. rails.co defines the three Colang subflows; each executes a custom action from actions.py and, when the action reports blocked, raises AISRFJailbreakRailException, AISRFInjectionRailException or AISRFOutputRailException (or says "I'm sorry, I can't respond to that." when exceptions are disabled) and stops.

Each action returns {blocked, score, labels, reason}; regex rows carry weights and the block threshold is 0.6, so two independent medium-weight signals add up to a block. Text is capped at 100000 characters. The library's jailbreak detection heuristics and jailbreak detection model flows are not used because they need gpt2-large (perplexity) or NVIDIA NIM endpoints, and self check input needs an LLM. To use them, point config_path at your own directory with a models section; keep enable_rails_exceptions: true so the finding can name the flow that fired (without it the finding is still produced from the activated-rails log).
Prerequisites: pip install nemoguardrails. Offline behaviour: the bundled config needs no network; status()["configured"] is false while the library is missing or the directory has no config.yml.

The response {"flagged", "payload", "breakdown": [{"detector_type", "detected", "detector_id", "policy_id", ...}]} is mapped detector by detector (at most 10):

When the screening is flagged, every detected entry is raised to at least HIGH and confidence is 0.9 (0.7 otherwise). Findings are titled Lakera Guard detected <detector type> in the <request|response>, tagged lakera and the detector type, with metadata.detector_type, detector_id, policy_id, project_id, flagged and the first 10 payload entries. A flagged response without a breakdown produces a single HIGH guardrail finding "Lakera Guard flagged the request". Network or API failures are logged at most once per minute, stored as last_error and produce no findings.
Prerequisites: a Lakera API key and outbound HTTPS. Offline behaviour: no findings, last_error set. Tests and air-gapped deployments can swap the transport (lakera._TRANSPORT) with an httpx.MockTransport.
Rebuff's fourth layer is implemented by the gateway itself so that it works with every provider format and needs no external service. Injection, detection, block_on_canary_leak and the per-agent inject_canary flag are described in Canary-Words. With run_output_rails the bundled NeMo output rail flags a leaked token as well, and LLM Guard's Regex output scanner can be configured with the AISRF-CANARY-[0-9a-f]{16} pattern for a third, independent check.
