Beta Installation Improvements
These are a collection of thoughts and notes about Beta as it relates to installation/updates/etc:
We need to add update support for both the runtime, modules and the application.
We need to ensure the installation/updates can traverse proxies correctly (including Proxy Authentication).
Windows has Auto Proxy Support also.
We need to add Crash detection software. We want to use Breakpad
We need to also support collection of breakpad crash reports and integrate them into Developer.
Add support for “channel streams” where the runtime, modules and applications can point to different distribution channels. We should support the following streams:
- Production – this is a stable stream of releases considered production stable
- Beta – this is a pre-production release stream of software which is considered almost production (i.e. beta testing)
- Developer – this is an unstable release stream of software which is being developed
We need to provide code signed executables.
Windows supports a new technology called ClickOnce.
We’ve found through testing that Windows is very very slow with file copy operations. (Vista is by far the worse). We need to see how we can reduce or be smarter about file copying. Can we unzip directly into target folders? Can we move directories vs copy contents?
We currently require Elevated permissions on Vista and Windows 7 because of the common installation of the runtime and some data files. We need to either make the executable support elevated execution or move all files into the user space (I think this is preferred).
We have a bug where the Sqlite databases aren’t respecting the application data directory (even though we are setting it in the WebKit delegate).
We need to ensure we integrate with the desktop (Shortcuts, Program Files, Uninstall, etc) for the application installer and Titanium Developer.
We need to better support native linux packaging mechanisms like the debian package format. We should consider Alien as a tool for common packaging format which outputs different distribution packages.
We need to code sign binaries.
We’re currently installing under /Library/Application Support but this breaks in multi-user systems. We need to move to ~/Library/Application Support for per-user installation and data files.
Better support for DMG background image and window sizing.
